Male plants are useless to smoke.
It takes practice to learn the difference between the two.
In general but not always the case, females will tend to
be bushier and have more branches and leaves.

Depending how your growing, when the season gets close
to the end the plants will stop growing for about a week
or two and will turn into a male or female.

Females have tiny white pistels (flowers) and you will see
alot of resin (crystals)
Males will not have crystals but ultra tiny pollen sacs that
resemble miniscule banana shapes.

Go to web site below to read more.
If your new to it all, you will have to do some research.
Best of luck.

How soon can you take a clone from a seedling plant...(about a foot tall already)...to find out the sex?

Thanks

At 4--6 weeks the plant becomes sexually mature. Some people can tell at this point by checking pre-flowers at the nodes but this isn't fool-proof.
The only way you can tell for sure is to veg until sexually mature at least, then switch the lights to 12/12; in a few weeks the plants will express sex when they begin to flower.
Males express first, by growing "balls" (pollen sacs). They are very noticeable. As soon as you see a plant growing these "dingle balls", rip it up. In a week the sacs will open and shed their pollen, and seedy pot is NOT what you want.
Male plants can be smoked, skuffed for hash or cooked with, but it is low-potency.

A better way is to clone off a known female. Then you don't have to waste time and space caring for plants that are males.

You can take cuttings (clones) off a plant that is as little as 6" tall.

Take NEMISIS' advice and do a lot of reading.
