She pulled up to the self-serve pump in an old microbus
She slid out from the driver's seat, that’s when I thought I was in love
She got three dollars worth of regular, soy nuts, and some 30 weight,
and as I stood in line behind her, I asked her for a date

She said you look like a nice young man, so please don't take this wrong,
but if you've got a brain at all you'll leave me alone

‘Cause, I may have had a hard life but I'll still pick up the trash,
And if you don't approve of the way I live, you can kiss my ass
Ask me again another day or come on by sometime
But if it's all the same to you, I'm goin' to see K-Dub tonight

She had a tattoo of J Bear runnin' halfway down her back
Camisole was faded and her jeans were off a thrift store rack
And all her earthly treasures were in the back seat of her car
A guitar, an old dog, and some coins in a Mason jar

She had an autographed photo of Ben and Jerry, she was queen of the local state park
She looked damned good in daylight, and even better at a phish concert with glowsticks in the dark
And the only earthly pleasure she ever wanted out of life,
Was a man to be good to her and to live
Yeah... or maybe to jam with on a street corner just like that time her and David Grisman did

‘Cause, she still goes to the 'roo, and she'll still pick up the trash
And if you don't approve of the way she lives, you can kiss her ass
Ask her again another day or come on by sometime
but if it's all the same to you, She’s stayin' home tonight

(acoustified bluegrassy guitar solo)

(Refrain)
Yeah, she may have had a hard life, but she'll pick up the trash,
so if you don't approve of the way she lives….(STOP) You can just kiss her ass.

My heart is sighing
Can't you feel the cold wind and the pain
Yeah, my heart is sighing
Can't you feel the cold wind and the pain
Yeah, and I'm still standing out here
Like a god damn fool out in the rain

Yeah, now, I keep trying
You know it's hard to play the game
Well, you know, I keep trying
Don't you know, it's hard to play the game
And, I swear
If I ever knew it would be like this
Hell, you could have all of my love in vain

Well time was made for laughin'
Yes, time was made for dirt
If the sky don't stop its cryin'
Man, I'll be in the dirt

Yes, I keep trying
Can't you feel the cold wind turn your head around
Yeah yeah, I keep trying
Can't you feel the cold wind turn your head around
And if I don't get out of this soon
I may just get on up leave this town

Time was made for cryin'
TIme was made for you
If that man don't stop his cryin'
He's gonna take it out on you

And it hurts me so bad, yeah
Can't you feel the holes in my shoes
It hurts me so bad, yeah
Can't you just feel the holes in my shoes
And if I ain't got me a mule to ride
I'll just have me a case of the bad love blues
-----
I feel the course wind drifting
As the hours pass by night
And it's a shame, that this game
Can turn into perilous flight
I can feel your name calling me
In the darkest hours of night
Seldom seen, rather heard
I can't seem to turn on the light
And I can tell, when life is hell
It feeds you by the spoon
And in my name, thoughts cut like rain
I ought to shut the flume
And through all of this living
There's just one thing I know
From the shores of Georgia
To the bottom of my heart
These ways and changes come in like tides
And they're always washed back out
I can hear the sea call my name
The winds can turn your head around
I always feel like I'm in the game
Stuck in this little town
And all I want is to be at the front
And to wipe off this stupid frown
Given gifts and talent
Are enough to break you down
Never settle, move enough
My heart is breaking down
And through all of thise course living
Only one thing that I know
Let it go, let it go, let it go.
----
I've lost my line of vision
Man, I ain't got no sight
I've lost my line of vision
Man, I ain't got no sight
My baby done left me
And my ol' black cat has done died of fright

The hoodoo man come to get me
With his evil ways
Yeah, the hoodoo man come and get me
With his evil ways
And I ain't seen the sun shine in ninety-nine and one half days

I like my coffee and I like it black
This livin's gonna kill me and take my gunny sack
Now I ain't got a ticket, gotta get up on outta here
I could hitch me a terraplane, and save me all of my fears

Come to think of it, all my love's in vain
Yeah, said, come think of it, all my love is in vain
My baby gone done and mistreat me
And I'm too numb to feel the pain

Lost my left thumb in a poker game
Greenville, Mississippi, nineteen-thirty five
Yeah, that voodoo man was drunk as a skunk
If the good lord don't fix my supper
I'll just be thankful as hell to be alive

I hail from chattanooga
My daddy, the son of a slave
Yes, I hail from chattanooga
My daddy was the son of a slave
And if these hoodoo man blues won't kill me, I might as well go lie in my own grave.
