My #1 grow spot so far is a thin marshy swamp, the entire thing is basicly a giant mud pit. I know of root rot and other such problems, do you think it will grow succesfully in pure mud? Or should I plant more towards the drier edge of the mud(Where it will receive less light)

The only person I know of that grew in a swamp. Had to make 2-to 3 foot tall mounds above the ground level, and plant the seedlings in the middle of the mound. It worked for him, he was in florida at the time.
hope this helps.

What im dealing with isn't so much a swamp, as in the entire area is about 1 foot deep mud, there is no water on the top, im mostly concerned about drowning the roots.

Yeah that sounds about right.
The guy im referring to, grew a strain we all called "missippi mud".
I didn't actually mean to say "water".
Take perlite or vermeculite, and sand.-DIg a hole into the water table as deep as you can. Because it sounds like the water will be a foot or two under your "MUD".
Doon't buy seed it would be a waste. They would not make it. Get some bagseed- preferrebly from a bag you smoked that was good quality of a high. Columbian, or mexi-kind. they should be resistant to disease being from a southern & more tropical enviroment.
Dig a deep enough hole, deep as you can. A 4x4 hole is best for cannabis. Dont cave in the sides digging under the water, Always be careful. Mix the soil you removed with whatever soil amendments your planning to use. cow/chicken manure or even horse manure will work if there are farms nearby. Let chicken compost well it's hot.
use whatever ammendments, to mix with the sand, perlite, and soil out of the hole.
Be sure to use sand on the bottom of the hole, just pour a couple inches in the bottom. Drainage purposes. By the time you finish mixing sand and manure and whatever ammendments, and PERLITE or vermeculite, you will have a mound by the time you fill it back in.
AND YOUR PLANTS WILL ROCK
dont forget the greensand
may i suggest going to overgrow and doing a search on "vic's supersoil mix" or "vic high"
Good luck bro. Wish i was helpin out there!
