My plants are now 2 1/2 weeks old and since they were planted they've been on 12/12 light cycle. I have two questions. How long until ill be able to tell the sex, and how long before they start budding?

17 to 30 days for indica dominates to show sex.
depending on variety, your buds could be a week or longer behind that....
I have an afghaani sativa dom... that preflowers for 30 days after 12/12 is induced.
then it buds for two more months-a 12 week strain that one is...

I found this to be a good rule-of-thumb:
flowers don't usually appear until four leaf-levels of true leaves have grown-out.
looks like you've got 2 and the third one poping out now.

how come you started on 12/12 from the start? don't you have to veg for a certain time? wouldn't it be better to let it veg for a while longer ... the more plant you have in veg the more bud you'll have in flower??

Under lights a lot of useless stem growth occurs during veg.
The plants get larger and the light coverage per sq cm goes down.
And, of course, time to harvest is minimized at 12/12.

so is it better to go into flower 12/12 quicker and veg for less?

It's still a matter of opinion.
I say, when under 1000 watts or less, the answer is yes.
But others will argue.

the reason i went with 12/12 was a matter of space and time. I dont have a lot of room for 7 full grown plants....thats pretty big, and also i want to smoke my bud....im not plannning on having a huge crop.....just some nice personals

yeah i see now rocketdude, i'll keep an eye on your grow - looking forward to seeing how much they grow in flower. my ice and jacks went into flower on monday so it'll be cool so see how they go alongside yours as mine have vegged for a while. what strain you growing and how longs the flower time?
geckopelli, do you reckon then with my 250w setup i'd have been better to have gone into flower quicker?
mmm so flower more smaller plants ( them getting better light coverage ) or flower fewer bigger plants ( them getting less light coverage ) ... i'm sure i've posted something like this on this forum before  :)
this cinderella99 i've got at the moment is highly recommend btw :)
keep us updated with pics rocketdude hope the grow grows well :)

This lady is in her 5th week ...but yet still only 5" tall...alot of potential for buds.

at 12/12, your plant would be half finished or more at 5 1/2 weeks.
Some of us have been tying our plants back for 30 years, but I've never heard of "LST".
I've yet to run into a "new" technique that isn't 20 years old.

I hear ya geck,
LSD , yes I have heard of it- I also hear it was real popular in the 60"s, been hearing that since the 60's as a matter of fact.
I never heard of lst though What does it stand for? little string training?
Tiying em down, and staking them to the ground like a vine, has always been a great idea to increase harvest and lower detectability outdoors.
But your wrong geck ,I only been tying them for 25 years myself.

well I took some time to look for LST on several different sites....you dont have to look very far! Theres one in the journals here right now by Bob_bong! and I know I watched 2 succesful LST style grows at this site aswell.

Im currently using the LST method to keep my grow low..and to get more light penetration! Works for me!

o.k. then,
but what does f.i.m. mean, because my cats do it to mine all the time
low stress training= lst
we just call it tying them down
Try a ttd method man it's better.
i just messin with ya , no arguments here.
i been preachin how to tye em down for 20 years at least.

I had a boss over the summer when i was about 15.
He took me into the backyard once- to show me his plant. He said"can you see it?"
Couple minutes went by, Im like "huh where?"
He pointed to my feet- I was practically standing on it! L.O.L.
O.K. when your plants get about 4-6 inches tall outdoors in spring, bend it over to the ground and stake it {Like with A tentstake, or a coathanger loop-leave enough room for the stem to grow}when the growth tip gets 4" again bend and stake it again. Make it grow on the ground like a vine. Each branch will produce a growth tip {bud} nearly as big as the main one.
I guess indoors most people tie them to the buckets.
Not much point in it indoors, to my way of thinking. Unless your celing height restricts you. I a firm believer in letting them stretch- if you have to top or bend, by all means bend.

Well if each branch will produce a growth tip {bud} nearly as big as the main one...why not have 10 or more? The grow reports I watch and read on LST all claim the same thing...more yeild. And if you dont have the wattage or room...why not get the most bang for your buck? It appears you get better light penetation, more colas and requires less ceiling height.
I wish I had the room to try both methods, it would make for an interesting grow journal!
