I just started growing last week, and I've already got some pretty lil seedlings going on...but I really don't know what strain they are. =\ Aside from smoking it, is there any way to tell what strain a plant is? I picked these seeds off of a bedroom floor which hasn't been cleaned in at least 5 years...so I really have no history on these babies.

No! Grow 'm, compare 'm to others of similar age or compare 'm to the zillions of pictures you see in this and other forums. And you might still never know. If you want to make this a 'project', post a quality picture periodically and we'll help you out as much as is possible. b1

It has taken me over 30 years of study, and still I need to run an unknown strain for around a year before I can be sure what it is. Distinguishing types of cannabis can be tricky, but it can be done. It is much easier to do (for me anyways) if it is straight raw landrace sackseed.
I just traded some of my fresh 3 month old seeds- for a thousand 15 year old kindseeds. But it's still bagseed, and my germ rate is hell on those ones. But so far I have culled juicyfruit thai from those beans, and made a couple screamin crosses to work with.
Good luck, like b1 says post pics and we might could help somewhat.

I couldn't care less what someone somewhere named what I'm smoking.
All I care is if it gets me where I want to go.
Plus, Northern Lights #1 from one seed bank is often quite different from Northern Lights from another seed bank, for example.

I thought seeds had a limited shelf life of like 5 years and then after that their germination rate really falls off?

the germanation rate does diminish after a couple of years but its still possible to get a nice plant if you clone the plant you can renue the strain i never use seeds more than two years old good luck

You can get an idea of if it's an indica or sativa by the leaf width. This is quite a widespread way of knowing if it's couchlock or an uppy high, although I've grown B52s which look Indica all the way except they have a very high sativa influence in breeding.
Difficult call but I'd buy some seeds next time............
