View Full Version : Hippy Weddings Anyone?

Hi All -

I'm going to be getting married probably a year from now......I'm only 22 - so I haven't truely lived the hippy world but I've been a hippy at heart since birth (my mom has a video of me singing "they call me mellow yellow" in my sandbox when i was about 4) so anyway -

i'm getting married and i'm not into the typical fru fru poofy dress thing and i want to have a hippy wedding - barefoot mandatory and all that. Anyhow all i can find online as far as pics of dresses are kind of prude ones - high lace necks and all that. I'm wondering if anybody had a hippy wedding back in the 60's and could possibly send me pics of their dress?!?! I just need a pic my grandma and I are going to sew my dress so all we really need is a visual. ( i tried to draw a kind of dress i wanted - she did a test run skirt part of it and it looked more like little house on the prairie than hippy)

so anyway - please help!
if anyone has any good idea's to help make the wedding more genuine - i'd love to hear it!

thanks!
abbie

I put this one up in Applespark's post. I saw it on ebay. I liked it. :) It's not exactly what I want, but it's easy to change around. The girl designed it herself. :)

Me, neither. And I hate to say it, but it's probably because it's the baby. Andrew said he just wasn't ready to be a daddy...yadda yadda yadda....

It must be nice to have that choice! I wish I could say, "Gosh, you know, I just don't feel like being a Mommy today!" and the whole world would cater to me and I could be a princess. But no.

But I'm happier with Noah than I was with him. And I can always threaten to take him back to Sears if he acts up. That's what my mom always used on me... :)

oh hannah your so funny... when I want to make my kids appreciate me I turn on the vaccum and stick it(the hose) on my head so it sucks on my hair... they think its eatting me so they scream and hug me... a garenteed well behaved kids for 1/2 hr. they'll prob have serious issues with vaccums one day though...

Sometimes I'll lie on the floor and pretend to be dead and Noah climbs all over me trying to figure out what's wrong. It's so cute. Then, when he's on my back, I'll jump up and run around like a horsie... :) I have no friends. But it's better than dinner and a movie. And I burn calories.... :)

It's so cute how, if he thinks I'm hurt or something, he'll come over and put his hand on my leg to make sure I'm okay. I have a sweet boy!

try this site the lady makes beautiful dresses. http://www.snakemountainthreads.com/ (http://www.snakemountainthreads.com/)

when i had my "wedding" my hubby wore ballbottoms and a white butterfly collar dress shirt and i wore a fairy shirt and a blue patchwork skirt.................

we had the preacher man read this in place of our vows........

Now you will feel no rain
for each of you will be
shelter to the other.

Now you will feel no cold
for each of you will be
warmth for the other.

Now there is no more loneliness
for each of you will be
companion to the other.

Now you are two bodies
but there is only one life
before you.

Go now to your dwelling place
to enter into the days
of your togetherness.

And may your days be good
and long upon the earth.

I love that. When i get married (years from now) i'd like to use something like that instead of the regular vows. I am not christian so I don't want a christian wedding. I will probably get married on a beach or something.

We got married barefoot in the park. We actually had two ceremonies. The first was for a very select group of friends. It was a Wiccan Handfasting. Then in the afternoon we had a wedding with a more Native American theme to it. That seemed more acceptable to family. We both wore hemp. My dress was sort of like a long A-line with bell sleeves. The sleeves had long fringe made from the colors of the four directions. I also had a shawl that had fringe in the same colors. DH wore a cotton shirt that we bought at a ren faire with hemp pants. On the front of his shirt and the front of my dress I made a medicine wheel with the ribbons of the four directions and appropriate crystals at each direction. It's kind of hard to describe. But it was pretty cool. We had a giveaway from the Native tradition. We gave each person a dream catcher that we made ourselves. There was a ribbon attached with our names and the date on it. We used the Apache Prayer also. Then on our honeymoon we went to the Hopi, Navaho, and Zuni reservations. Arizonia and Southern Utah are beautiful places to visit.

I think the whole barefoot idea is so beautiful.. I could definetly have a hippy wedding if I ever plan on getting marry, lol.. Still not sure if I could see myself with just one person for the rest of my life, but life may throw me someone decent.. Good luck with your wedding.. that picture of the dress shown here is quite beautiful.. =)

One of my hippydippy friends had his wedding at the courthouse and his reception at Dunkin' Donuts. Teehee...

I'm sorry I don't have anything constructive to say- congratulations, my friend. Have a donut.

you know, I a hippy man feel the same way.

there will be one in my life someday. but I don't think I will find one here in my town. I am also not afraid of a sister with a family, but my first goal is to finish college then find a partner and take on the world!

Something like this???? This is from Gypy Rose, and I thought they had a white one (but didn't see it on line)...when i saw it I thought it would make a nice wedding dress.

I had wanted an outdoor barefoot wedding 30 years ago, but I was the only daughter and my mom and dad got married quickly (OMG...she was pregnant??!!;) ) so I had a wedding for her. So my dress was satin instead of cotton and I wore slippers instead of bare feet....

best wishes!!!!

My boyfriend and I either want to have a hippie wedding like some of you guys walking barefooted in a park OR an underwater wedding. That is, IF we get married. I'm not trying to jump the gun here ;)

Flowers! Lots of flowers in yer hair. That is what I did at my wedding. I had a light airy...indian dress, flowers in my hair and a yellow submarine lemon cake to match. Not only did I get married and started on a new journey of life...but when i took his name i renamed myself. Hence forth Laurel Bay-Tree. I was born Laurel Elizabeth. Hmmm...what else...wedding songs...so many to choose from....our..."Calico Skies" on the flaming pie album of paul mccartney. Check it out it explains our love in it all. We also danced to the yellow submarine as it was the song that we met to. Peace and love and congrats!

Me and my sweetheart were married in the backyard of a friend's house 20-something years ago. It was short, sweet, small, and simple- but basically traditional.

We want to do it over, but this time it will be different. The vision is...

Cumberland Falls in mid-spring... during a full moon... while the river is high... the sky clear... Cumberland Falls is one of the only places on earth with a moonbow- a "rainbow" in the moonlight that's so bright as to be spectactular beyond words- it's so bright and full-colored that it seems to almost be electric... I've only seen it once ever in its full glory.

A short handfasting ceremony with few words, many symbols, and a touch of humor besides. With drumming. And quotes from Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet, Richard Bach's "Illusions," and maybe even Robert Heinlein's "Stranger In A Strange Land."

At the end of it? Acoustic guitars playing not wedding music, but the song I always hear in my mind's ear when I imagine this: Midnight Moonlight (easy to ignore the religous lyrics, the chorus makes up for that, besides, we could do a re-write the religious lines if we want).

That's our own little dream...

my wife and i were married outdoors in a little kind of park on the other side of the meeting room of an apartment complex where a friend of ours lived, the reception being held in that adjacent meeting room, in a baha'i cerimony we had largely arrainged and planed ourselves.

it was in among the shade of trees and there was a canopy we were under, along with the two representatives of the l.s.a. there to witness and take part in it and her father and my mother who were our only living parents.

guests set in several rows in a semi-circle facing us and the local baha'i choir of whome many of our friends were members and for whome my wife had made robes stood off to one side and sang.

two of our friends video taped the event and we still have the tapes and watch them once in a while. another friend took several photographs.

i wore a white suit with a dark silk shirt and white silk tie and she beighe silk. her and her many friends of freinds, organized and catered the reception and of course both of our friends and aquanitances were the guests. her friend who'se appartment was in the complex sang and played her guitar and brought her pet rabbit on a leash. another friend who was in a powered wheel chair kept the children of our guests amused by giving them rides.

i'm not sure how hippy some of you would call that but it was certainly uniquely our own.

=^^=

i agree with this...if you want some traditional stuff you can do something old, blue, new and borrowed in the dress itself! :)

why do you say that? no...marriage does not have to be such a the man law saying your allowed to be married as much as what it stands for. you committing your life to the one partner you love. you are still young and many years will you travel. with each step you walk down that road you gain experience. and in the opposite direction someone is new...starting out walking down the same road gaining similar experience and insight. and as you get closer you will bump and meet.

I believe you can have a deep, satisfying romantic relationship without marriage. However, if I get married. I want a really original wedding. I would want my wedding to be held in a beatiful open space...with lots of flowers. I would wear a wreath of flowers in my hair and a flowing off the shoulder dress. Writing my own vowels would be nice. I enjoy writing.Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.how sweet.

At the ripe old age of fifteen I have been engaged TWICE! Once to a person off these very forums and secondly to a middle aged optometrist (yes, I know it was wrong) and at this point I think I'm just going to enjoy my life as it is. I like being single and I like enjoying the people around me and not commiting just yet. I'm going to experience as much life as I can and then I'll settle down with somebody who has done this same. Then, we'll go live on Ron's (7river) homestead and have beautiful children.

I want a hippy wedding but I know my mom won't let me, so I guess I'll have to settle for the 'way expensive' type of wedding of which I don't want. We live simply! Why can't I have this just once!

If your parents are paying for it, I suppose it's at their discretion whether they want to pay for that kind of wedding or not.

Not that I dont agree with you. That's exactly what I want myself. Lucky for me, my dad's an ex-hippy and my mom's a hippy at heart (and lung ;) ), so they understand, I suppose.
