You might as well ask what sex is. It's something you need to experience to understand. Go to a gathering. Basically it's a bunch of hippies (and not just hippies anymore. Lots of punks, christians, hare krishnas, computer programmers, etc. everything) camping together.

It's like a festival, without admission fee, without vendors, without paid employees, without anyone being in charge. All entertainment and education is spontanious, informal, and free.

It's something different for everyone.
