Saw some kids that looked pretty cool and approached them since I'm sourceless, and being new in town, I'll talk to ANYONE out of pure friendliness. I began chatting with some lame question like where the local carwash is, and then asked if they were cool...

I asked if they were selling, and they just said, "Selling what?" At that point I bid them a good day and left. I feel like a moron!

not at all, any decent stoner will know the term "you cool?" and you flat out ask them if they smoke and if theya re selling so they had to have been stupid to ask selling what. the only problem i see is selling is a little vague(could be used by 5-0) maybe use an alternative word liek slingin

Good news: The neighbors directly behind me are a nice older couple who grow. Found out as they were lighting up. (One of their dogs always likes to follow me into my apartment and I usually take him home after dark.)

Cripes, your story reminded me of a time that we had just moved to a city, didn't know anyone, worked with like 3 other folks that were straight, and couldn't find a bud to save our souls. We ended up hanging out in a flipping topless bar, hoping against hope that we wouldn't get busted. <sigh> We got our wish ~ we didn't get busted, but we almost got burned by some jokers trying to sell us catnip or something. Sheesh. About 3 days later, we went out to a regular bar, just to to do some sort of partying, and hooked up.

MORAL OF THIS STORY:

I live in a hickass town and I can tell if someone smokes... hahha...if I know someone, around here, I just walk up to someone and ask them if they're going anywhere tonight and tell them to stop by whatever dude's house is closest and hand them $40 for an eighth of dank-ness and drop it by my place on their way home and usually they'll be cool with it and I don't have to pay for gas... I usually just share a few bowls and we're even.
