...is a nice (annual?) blood offering ceremony.

All around meso-america, stelea have been found belonging to most major pre-colonial cultures, depicting high-ranked people performing blood sacrifices upon themselves. Men would pierce their peni with sting ray spines and / or bone awls, and women would pull a thorned rope through their tongues. :) This would also lead to a trance in which the person in question could communicate with the spirits of the ancestors.

Now why can't we have anything like that anymore? :(

and the blood of the rulers was gathered on special cloth, and distributed to the masses of worshippers, who would consume the blood of the ruler & share his ecstacies...

yeah, some of that old time religion...
