This is going to sound rude, but I mean no offence to those of a different religion. Have you noticed that the tarot seems to have become, for lack of a better term, "christianized"? I find it difficult to read when dealing with the devil, or various trumps of the same basic twist. Maybe it's just my perception... what do you think?

theres lots of sets that don't have the devil or similar cards like the hierophant, so get a set that suits you.
try witches tarot
old path

robin woods tarot has two people in a dark tunnel for the devil card and not a devil on it.
mythics about th egreek myths

try being christian about it with the vampire set!

you don't sound rude but theres loads of different sets now
another one is motherpeace.

i think that tarot is an excellent tool for personnal growth and should be available for anyone who wishes to use it of any faith and like i said theres so much available you should find something that suits you

hope that helps

Samhain, you and I have something in common! I've been doing tarot readings for years, since highschool, but only for 2 years as a profession. It's so fascinating, it's odd that it's just a basic deck but every deck has a completely different artistic interpretation of them! I've been collecting decks for a while now, they're so beautiful...

might as well make the most of the knowledge of others while i'm here:)

could you exlain a basic spread to me...i got an instruction book with the deck i got but it's more written for experienced readers...and i'm only a beginner...or possibly not even a beginner...is there anything before beginner? cos that would be me...

thanks:)

I don't think that there's really a simple answer to that, Josie.

You can do a reading with just one single card, or lay out all 78 cards of the deck, depending on how thorough you want to make it.

Normally, a reader will look at about 10 cards. Some go by magikal numbers, like 7 or 13. Everyone will also lay out their cards differently ~ some will just put the cards in neat rows, some will cross a couple cards or lay them in a diamond shape.

In reality, you can pretty much do what you want. Once you've mastered what each card means, you can figure out a number and pattern that you're comfortable working with.

An idea to help you in learning your cards a little easier - Use the book the cards came with as your tool, and give it a read at least once over. Then get a pen and paper, and write a few key words for each card. Use that as a cheat sheet. Mix up your deck, and lay out 4 or 5 cards at a time, using your cheat sheet, read them and make them make sense. Then you can lay out the next 5 cards and do the same thing. If you go through the deck once a day doing it this way, you'll be able to memorize them in no time.

what happened to you writing each card's meaning each week? I haven't seen that in a while...

LOL i'm planning the magician card at the moment, so it will be up soon.
I know theres no chance of be being slack on here, but having said that I would rather make a good job of it rather than a rushed one.
i'm also going to be writing something else but i will leave that as a surprise
i'll just say it has something to do with the tarot too and i will include it in this thread.

P.S didn't your mother ever warn you about frowning, if the wind changes..... :D

I'm not rushing you.... not in the least... I was just wondering where you were going with it.... (don't overanalyze!) :p

OK, in a moment I am going to explain 'the celtic cross spread' but I just thought I would mention a few things about it before I did.
The celtic cross is the Tarot equivalent of a basic recepie or that 'little balck dress'
meaning that it is suitable for any questions or situation, a fail safe if your not quite sure which spread to use and easy to learn.
if you have difficulty picturing the postions of the spread on here you can always look in any tarot book as its featured in most of them.
in some books the meanings of the different postions change slightly, as a tarot reader you shouldn't feel afraid to taylor the spread to suit you, as you are the person reading the cards and will know what works best

In this spread all the cards should be facing you, as you are the one who is doing the reading. the person can always come round to your side for a closer look after you have finished.
also I would lay all the cards out then you can read them all in context rather than trying to read them one by one which I think is harder.
1) Card one
Place one card in the middle of your working area
This card represents the basic situation or the main question that the person is asking. or the main problems in the persons life at the moment.

2) card Two which crossess it for good or for bad
This card you lay accross card one face up so both cards form a cross. This represents the influencing factors. what is effecting the situation? what are the main factors that the person has to take into consideration with the situation or the question they have just asked.
tarot questions are rarley simple there are usually other things at play which this card reveals!

3) Card Three the distance past
This goes below the bottom point of the cross. what has happened in the persons distant past which is effecting their current situation, remember that although this card has 'gone' it has come up for a reason and does have an influnce in some way to the present situation even if the person doesn't realise it.
also remember that 'distant past' could mean a few months ago or years ago depending on the other cards around it.

4) Card four recent path
this goes to the left point of the cross. remember again that although it is 'gone' it still infleunces the situation and it could be as recent as this week or a couple of years ago depending again on the other cards.

5) Card five oppertunities
This goes above the cross and represents the oppertunties that are going to present themselves because of the current situation or to help the person get out of the situation if it is a troublesome one.
This card really can be anything, although it is often a person, ethier one that is already known or a new person. it could be a job oppertunity or an oppertunity for self improvement in some way.

6) Card six The doorway to the future.
this card, to the right of the cross shows what the person will have to go through in able to develope or preceed in this situation.
It could show changes, difficult or exciting times, success or a small step back, its just important to reasure or remind the person that they will go through this then come back out the other side and grow.

now do a verticle line at the right of the spread of four cards

1) Card one, you
(the card at the bottom of the line) this represents all that is the person you are reading for and may provide the person with some interesting insights into how their personality effects their life.

2) Card Two The people in your life.
Who's important in this persons life that effects this situation, and how do they support, help or hinder this person at this time?

3) Card Three hopes and fears
Its important here to explain that this is what the person hopes and fears in this situation not what will happen or won't happen.

4) The end
(top card of the line) This is exactly what it says how the situation will end, if it is unclear it may be worth dealing out a couple of more cards to claify but don't deal out to many or it may get very confused.

Now i have explained The Celtic cross if people want to give it a go and send in the sample readings, I would be happy to interperate or help to, as i'm sure others would too here

Blessings
