You won't be able to make caffeine, or extract it. Drink some coffee or something, or buy some caffeine pills.

I've got it. Take a handfull of coffee beans. There's your caffeine. Chew them at your leasure.

take coffee make sure it is finely ground to increase the surface area....

what you need is a solvent to extract the caffiene....an excellent one is H2O

heat the H2O to just below boiling place the finely ground coffee into the solvent and let sit for 8-12 minutes ..

once the alotted time has past pour the mixture there a filtering material to separate the solvent from the solid material ...discard the solid material

the remaining liquid solvent contains your caffiene ....simply ingest to deliver it to your body.

Good idea. Its basically really concentrated coffee. There's no real way to extract the caffeine from coffee, but you can always do that, so you dont have to drink very much of the liquid to get the same amount of caffeine.

What do you want to extract the caffeine for?

I find putting milk and sugar into the solvent makes the solvent taste better with this extraction method.

Some chocolate milk/syrup also makes it tasty....or cinnamon.

caffeine extraction is a typical lab for O-chem I class...
try googling "caffeine extraction organic chemistry" & see what you get, mmmmmm?
coffee, tea, kola, guarana, mate, etc will work...

Bad idea. I did this back in high school and it touched off an attak of appendicitis. The little shards of bean can float up into your appendix and irritate the hell out of it, resulting in infection. It can also happen with other tiny hard things you might ingest (tomato seeds, popcorn kernels, etc.) but methinks the chances are greater with a quarter pound of shattered bean floating through your colon. An appendectomy isn't fun. I still can't stand the smell of coffee. . .

Yet another vote the caffeine pills. Three bucks will get you a box of forty at Wal-mart. 200 mgs each.
oh ....wheres the fun in that?

Caffeine extracts better if you raise the pH of the water. Boil finely ground coffee (use a LOT, much more than you would normally use to make a pot of coffee) with some sodium carbonate (washing soda) in a pot of water. Let cool, and filter out the insoluble grounds.

Take the filtrate and mix with an equal volume of dichloromethane (DCM, methylene chloride) in a flask or glass bottle with a cap. A separatory funnel is the best tool if you have access to one. Shake vigorously, allow to separate, and drain off the DCM layer. Extract the mixture 2 or 3 times using fresh DCM each time. Combine the DCM extracts and evaporate off the solvent. The residue is relatively pure caffeine.

Is it really a good idea to advise people how to extract caffine so they can presumeably ingest it when the process involves adding chemicals that are NOT good for the outside let alone inside of bodies?

These are standard extraction procedures, which, if followed properly, will not result in any appreciable amount of contamination in the final product. The 2 "added chemicals" do NOT appear in the end product. The sodium carbonate remains in the discarded coffee solution, as it is NOT SOLUBLE in the dichloromethane. Dichloromethane is in fact used commercially for the production of *gasp* DECAFFEINATED COFFEE. It evaporates quickly and completely, even at room temperature.

Information wants to be free. Procedures for extraction of caffeine (and much more dangerous substances) are easily found all over the internet:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=caffeine+extraction+procedure

, as well as the chemistry section of any library. Would you restrict this info to those with advanced degrees in chemistry, who wouldn't need it in the first place? :)

A presumption of a certain baseline level of intelligence goes along with posts in this particular forum. If the whole world were "dumbed down" to a level sufficient to protect the true morons from themselves, the rest of us would never be able to learn anything new....

When I was younger, my parents had this stuff we called "rocket fuel". A decanter with a hole, plug, and filter in the bottom; was a can of coffee grounds, and a slow dripping water resevior on top. Let this sit 4 2 days. Then take out plug over an old fashioned glass milk jug, or jar, and let all the fuel go into the jar. The liquid is supposed to be 2 teaspoons per 8 oz. of hot water, for coffee. Drink that shit straight and you will get caffeine drink 400% stronger than expresso.

Since caffeine is an alkaloid I guess you could try a standard A/B (acid-base) extraction technique with a solvent like benzene or naphtha, or maybe even DCM. I wouldn't recommend it, as there really isn't much of a point to it, and if there are any contaminants in your final product it won't be worth it, because you could have just gotten caffeine pills.
