Gay book ban goal of state lawmaker
Wednesday, December 01, 2004

MONTGOMERY - An Alabama lawmaker who sought to ban gay marriages now wants to ban novels with gay characters from public libraries, including university libraries.

A bill by Rep. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale, would prohibit the use of public funds for "the purchase of textbooks or library materials that recognize or promote homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle."
Allen said he filed the bill to protect children from the "homosexual agenda."

"Our culture, how we know it today, is under attack from every angle," Allen said in a press conference Tuesday.

Allen said that if his bill passes, novels with gay protagonists and college textbooks that suggest homosexuality is natural would have to be removed from library shelves and destroyed.

"I guess we dig a big hole and dump them in and bury them," he said.

A spokesman for the Montgomery-based Southern Poverty Law Center called the bill censorship.

"It sounds like Nazi book burning to me," said SPLC spokesman Mark Potok.

Allen pre-filed his bill in advance of the 2005 legislative session, which begins Feb. 1.

If the bill became law, public school textbooks could not present homosexuality as a genetic trait and public libraries couldn't offer books with gay or bisexual characters.

When asked about Tennessee Williams' southern classic "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof," Allen said the play probably couldn't be performed by university theater groups.

Allen said no state funds should be used to pay for materials that foster homosexuality. He said that would include nonfiction books that suggest homosexuality is acceptable and fiction novels with gay characters. While that would ban books like "Heather has Two Mommies," it could also include classic and popular novels with gay characters such as "The Color Purple," "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "Brideshead Revisted."

The bill also would ban materials that recognize or promote a lifestyle or actions prohibited by the sodomy and sexual misconduct laws of Alabama. Allen said that meant books with heterosexual couples committing those acts likely would be banned, too.

His bill also would prohibit a teacher from handing out materials or bringing in a classroom speaker who suggested homosexuality was OK, he said.

Allen has sponsored legislation to make a gay marriage ban part of the Alabama Constitution, but it was not approved by the Legislature.

Ken Baker, a board member of Equality Alabama, a gay rights organization, said Allen was "attempting to become the George Wallace of homosexuality."

Aside from the moral debates, the bill could be problematic for library collections, said Jaunita Owes, director of the Montgomery City-County Library, which is a few blocks from the Alabama Capitol.

"Half the books in the library could end up being banned. It's all based on how one interprets the material," Owes said.

Oh Alabama. Sometimes you wonder why we laugh at you like a retarded child at a family reunion. This is why.

Although I am wondering, how is a culture which is currently integrating itself all over the globe (Mcdonalds in India for example) possibly "under attack from every angle"? http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/news/1101896768316400.xml

I hope this guy will be willing to forfeit his job if, in five years time, there are still homosexuals in Alabama.

I've never got how anything in schools is defined as "promoting" homosexuality. It seems that in above example, acknowledging its existence is considered promotion. But really, short of actually including feltching in sex ed classes (sex ed in Alabama ), I don't understand how simply reading about the gay would lead you to do it.

But then, it's probably nothing the little cunt hasn't heard before.

reminds me of when I was in highschool (mid 70's). A group of "do gooders" wanted to wanted to ban The Adventures of Huckabery Finn. Why ?? you may wonder ......

the answer itself is repugnent ..

because SOMETHING "must" have happened between Jim (an adult) and Huck (a prepub boy) when they were on the raft.

Don't laugh, they were serious about this.

They really did believe that Jim molested Huck and from that they wanted the book banned. How they ever thought that, is in itself perverted. Needless to say the school board turned them down.

oh, and this wasn't Alabama .. it was San Antonio, Texas. Northeast Independent School District.

... wow, what ignorant bastards. Most of the time people want it banned because it supposedly promotes racism or degrades the image of some towns community; both are just stupid reasons. Nigger isn't a racist term until you put it in a certain context.

Isn't that the same state where its against the law to get married if you are a black and white couple? The state with the confederate flag on their state flag.

If so, then this homophobia does not surprise me.
Canada has its share too though. A number of gay men have been beaten to death in Vancouver in the last few years.

I think the idea of keeping gays out of the library is cuz they know that gays have a higher average IQ and they are trying to handicap them. What do you think?
Neil Young wrote a song about Alabama or something that wasn't overly flattering.
At least the song Sweet Home Alabama seems to express some displeasure.

In one of Pearl S. Buck's classic novels, one of her male characters had sex with a Chinese military man. It was an intrinsic part of the novel because it shaped the character's behavior. She was the daughter of a missionary man in China. I wonder if her books will be banned.

Probably not, since most of the characters in her books had pre-arranged marriages (usually with women who were not suitable for being whores because they were ugly). This, however, is high literature!

Why did the state library in Alabama close down?

Someone stole the comic book.

My earlier post may sound harsh--there are probably some way cool people in Alabama, and they've got enough to deal with without us making it worse.

Hey hip folk in AL, is there anything we can do to help?

Yes, in depth quizzing about kylie, hot pants, queer as folk, matching chintz with chintz and the Wizard of Oz whenever you apply for a library card.

Amen, MS. I went to high school in Montgomery, had my first homosexual encounter in the locker room therein. I love Alabama and truly believe it to be the heartland of America, so much moreso than those corn-covered states. But Alabama has some pretty wierd residents; Roy Moore and Bill Pryor not the least mamong them.
