Thanksgiving 5 a.m.

I awoke but five minutes ago,

because I heard a cry
from the other room.

Fatherly instinct
carried my feet.
There was no hesitation.

She had only awoken
for a moment, and
went back to sleep.

I gazed down upon her.

And not for the first time,
was I left powerless,
unable to decide whether
to smile or to weep.

So now I sit,
here, (here is gone)
typing this message
of thanksgiving.

And I can taste the salt
of my exaltant tears
as they touch the curve
of my smiling lips.

I am indeed grateful for this.
