Who would they be?

I'd love to see what counterculture folks (they don't necessarily have to be hippies from the 60s) you'd invite to dinner. I would invite Ani DiFranco, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, and Bob Marley. I think it would be a groovy dinner :)

I know it's not too creative, but i guess I would just pick John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. I would be freakin awesome to dine with all the Beatles, and there wouldn't be the awkwardness between guests that there would have been between say, Jim Morrison and Bob Marley ( or who knows maybe they'd get along great)

I only get to pick 4?

Let's see, maybe Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Keith Green, and Bob Marley. I think that would make for an interesting dinner conversation.

Or for a ladies night out I think I might invite Joni Mitchell, Joan Biaz, Ani d'Franco, and Stevie Nicks.

Man, Janis would have to be there. I'd love to sit next to Bob Marley and feel de good vibes. Yeah Gandhi would definately have an honored seat. Last but not least is Mr Garcia himself. I sure miss him. What a musician. Loved the bluegrass stuff he did. He could play us a tune.

Neal Cassady - the grateful dead have been quoted saying that he is the father, they are the children......he was high

Jerry Garcia of course only more for his socio political views rather then musical accomplishments

Richard Alpert aka Ram Dass aka ex harvard psychologist and fellow member of league of spiritual discovery (headed by dr timothy leary)

And either Terrance McKenna, Robert A. Wilson, or Allen Ginsberg....

oh and shit....I'd try and squeeze aldous huxley in there as well........I think I pushed the 4 person limit....sorry I hope you can forgive me

then John lennon gets to come sit on my lap.

We give Keith moon acid and lock him in the closet. Now bob marley gets to take his seat.

We get mick jaggar and keith richards to somehow act as a ceiling fan

and finally for dinner... we all chow down on a nice plate of deep fried Dick Cheny... yum

WOOOOOOO I love this thread.....I'm totally postin! Alright, lets see here....

To start off this meal with appropriate social bliss, you must have an appetizer made up of Jimi Hendrix.
As the evening is about to begin, to counterattack the grin, I'd order a tall glass of the late Janis Joplin.
For a full rounded meal, to complete and not end the feel, my plate would overflow with the entirety of The Beatles.
But at the end of the din, a tasty treat for the one soul within, the candy of sin would be Jim Morrison.

P.S. OFCOURSE I KNOW OF SYD BARETT!!!! HELL YEAH! I can't spell, btw. Sorry. lol. But, fuck yeah....he'd HAVE to be there. Great music. And, the only place this trippy meal could happen would HAVE to be on a magic bus!! Or a magic carpet ride!;) Peace, love, and freedom ya'll.....I'm full up to the brim...it's nap time.

ok i have just a few months ago gotten into the 60's and i'm learning fast but it seems that i have only gotten in up to my knees so far and have thus to be completely submerged. i love this thread. i wrote down a list of names that i am going to go look up.

Frank Zappa- absolute genious music

Jim Morrison- haven't really heard much of the doors music but i love his quotes about freedom. i think that the man is brilliant.

Neal Cassady- .....................................I-uhhhhhhhh.....................bah............?.... ...................(speachless) (inhails deeply) wow!

Ken Kesey-one flew over the cuckoo's nest was amazing and as much as i loved kesey before after reading the electric kool aid acid test....him and the merry pranksters...i'm a big fan of their work...just amazing....he was like a jesus for heads.........wow

lover/young_peace

right on wildfire.... awesome blossom list you got there.
I too think Jim Morrison was brilliant. Also an extremely moving singer. But take into account he was heavy on the drugs, specially alcohol. Many people dismiss his work because of his reputation, but i still think he is amazing. He has really intelligent theories.... Music is really groovy too. Wish I could hook you up with some "Best of the Doors"..... mmmm sweet sweet songs. sing it too me Jim! he was a great man, not too bad looking neither. Ironically today (July 3) is the 33rd anniversery of his death.... oOoOoOo... im having a bad day.

Ken Kesey.... i agree there too. hahaha.... I'm forced to take D.A.R.E. program this year (I dont know if you heard of it or not.... but its where a cop comes in and tells the kids drugs are scary and drug-users are monsters etc...)... so I plan to ask the cop, "Officer? Have you ever been a member of the Merry Pranksters? Are you aware that Tim Leary did enormous amounts of drugs and died happy in his bed at the age of 75??" i know its mean but i want to see what he says.... feel like terrorizing him whoa ooops sorry off topic...

hee hee hee ive forgetton the point of all this so rock on.....

]Prof. Noam Chomsky-this could still at least concievably happen, he's still alive.

George Harrison-and we would definatelly have Indian food at the meal.

William S. Burroughs- (bring a junkie to dinner? Why not  ) Actually very funny and real person!

George Orwell-Another fan of Indian Food, great philosopher and author.

The conversation would be amusing, transcendental , sublime ,and thought provoking. It would be one of those conversations that lasts all night.! :)

... isn't it a coincidence that their first names all begin with "j"?

I thought the same thought. A lot of musicians have their name that starts with a J. Before I met my new music teacher I asked him what are the rest of the letters of his name if the first was J. I had just met the guy at that point and strangely he's name started with a J.

Federico Garcia Lorca- Gay Spanish poet/playwright who was murdered in the Spanish Civil War

I know it's not too creative, but i guess I would just pick John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. I would be freakin awesome to dine with all the Beatles, and there wouldn't be the awkwardness between guests that there would have been between say, Jim Morrison and Bob Marley ( or who knows maybe they'd get along great)
the beatles didnt get along in the end

Or the members of Genesis who haven't become popheads (Peter Gabriel, & Phil Collins).

For those who don't know their names; Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett, Anthony Phillips, & Tony Banks (Anthony Phillips isn't in my sig, he was the original guitarist replaced by Steve Hackett)

These guys made and still make some pretty interesting non-commercial (most of all) music.

I just stopped in and saw this thread. I am an old prankster from better days. I worked with BGP ground crew for the Dead. I road with Ken on Further and have a project with Zane (His son). I worked with Wavy Gravy on the hog farm for a while and am an old friend of bear (Owsley). I have stood in the company of Tim Leary and baba Ram Dass. I actually have a home movie of Ken kesey and Hunter S Thompson and a few others you wouldn't know.

I spent years on the road with the dead and was always back stage with the band and their guest. I find the list of people you would have dinner with Interesting. Like we have said a hundred times... Nothing lasts.

See you on the road... maybe.

this is me if you know who I am

Syd Barrett

Dostoevsky
and, the first ape to control fire.

hailtothekingbaby
04-05-2005, 08:26 PM
Jesus of Nazareth
Karl Marx
Satan

Edit: removed Adolf Hitler from the list because although he's an interesting person to say the least, the counter-culture label doesn't fit him. He was more like the climax of the rise of nationalism and militarism that started with the industrial revolution.

I can't think of anyone to replace him with at the moment though...
