Gil mentioned it, so.....
Never tried it in pill form... but I had it the way the pacific islanders do. It sharpens your thoughts, but makes your lips and tongue numb, makes you kind of clumbsy and gives a mild buzz, not bad really, but tastes like dish water..... Every evening just before sunset, people all up and down the streets gather on their front steps or by the side of the road with bags of kava root, a cut off piece of iron pipe about a foot and a half long, that is closed off at one end, and a heavy stick. for the next hour or so all over the island you can hear a steady thunk thunk thunk as the roots are ground into pulp. Once it's nicely mashed, you dump it out into a piece of pantyhose and set that to steep for a while in a big pot, long enough for a beer or two.... Then you pull it out and squeeze it real good and set it into another pot for later. The first batch is served in a wooden bowl or a coconut shell, passed around to one person at a time. You have to down the whole thing at once and clap your hands together, and pass it back to the host, who then serves the next.....

In the old days, before western hygenics and all, the root was chewed to a pulp by virgins, and spit into a bowl to be served....
an aquired taste, no doubt :p
