I traveled around and hitchhicked thousands of miles across the country..I once hitched 2000 miles from So Cali to Oregon and back.. got rides fast.. got a few long hauls in 18 wheelers.. Food got scarce and a bathroom.. I refused a lot of rides too..at night I would find a Truck Stop and ask one of the truckers to give me a ride.. I'd sleep and the trucker would wake me up when my stop came up..I had a great adventure saw a lot on the way..learned a lot..the only bad thing that happen is on the way back to So. Cali. a ride left me off in a wierd place..desolate somewhere in San Bernadino and I got in the car with some redneck and he took me out to the toulies and raped me.. I thought he was going to kill me.. I was leterly petrified.. I couldn't even scream..when he got done violating my 17 yr old petrified body he took me back to the freeway and dumped me out on the side of the road..I somehow pulled it together and got the nerve to stick out my thumb sos to get the hell outta there.. a dude pulled over and was very nice.. I told him what had happened and he took me right to my parents home..he wanted me to call the cops.. I declined.. he wanted to go in with me and tell my parents.. but I just thanked him and told him I would be alright..I never told my parents..I hitched still ..I was just more aware of vibes and to look first..I hope you have a great adventure soul.. but please be very careful out there.. there are preditors that you wouldn't belive or expect..dont get stuck out in the night..LOVE LOVE LOVE

Man, Shameless..
I'm sorry to hear you had to go through that. That was one hell of a learning experience, huh. I bet you've about done and seen everything haven't you?? That concept is so appealing to me. Just pack up and go..wherever your little free spirit leads you. I can only dream about such things now...I'm pretty bound to where I am for the time being,(small town/narrowminded/nosy ass people) and I know I just don't belong here. Maybe one day I'll get to venture out and find my place. It's nice to think about it sometimes, very nice...

damn....i'm sorry that happened to you. im not female so i dont really have to worry about getting raped THAT much, but the chance is still out there....and there is worse things that can happen, like murder.....i'll be ok :) i can defend myself for the most part and will have a knife with me.
i dont think i'll be hitchiking that much tho, but who knows, thats a long ways away...im thinking of just bringing some clothes and some music and taking a bus to san francisco in january and hopefully my bank is there too, then i dont have to worry too much. who knows :p 'twill be fun.

My advice is stay south and bring lots of cash and/or be willing to hand out a lot of sexual favors in lieu of cash. Happy trails!

Life is leaning the good the bad and the ugly of it..I curse rapest everyday and wish them all a short trip to hell on a one way ticket..I sometimes feel like Forrest Gump..like no one coulda done all that in one life time..that was just the tip of the iceberg for me.. I was instore for a lot more "learning'"..

Somewhat different back when I was hitching.
I got a ride up to NYC in 1970...theres a post around here somewhere about a little of that. Then went to VT then back to NYC then to Kentucky then to Zanesville Oh where I lived with a neat guy for a bit, then back to Norfolk, then the loony bin for a spell, then took off Jan 3rd 1971 back to Zanesville then back down to rt.66...got some kicks...
All the way out to Venice beach Cal..ee...for...ni...aaaa!!
Hung there for awhile then took a cool jaunt up highway 1 to SF...camped at Big Sur...oh so cool there...up to Eureka,...rolled down a cliff to get away from a state man....crossed back over the road, back down to Needles....haha.....some of you know why I laugh.
Then thumbed back across to VT.
Lived at EPP with Larry for a time, then thumbed back to Norfolk and that was the end of my hitching..
I have loads of stories too.
Like Shameless I ran into a bad time, but it was in NYC....held for 5 days by a couple of asswipes.
My advice....don't hitch.
There are people(loose term) who specifically drive around looking for people to prey upon.
This makes me so sad as I had the best time on my USA tour. I wish everyone could do it...learned alot more than any stinking school could have taught me....but it was full of hard knocks too.
If your going to travel don't do it alone, and be wary....sad but so true.
If you go...send me a post card..

I'll get postcards for everyone :)
At first, I will be leaving my house alone. Who knows who I'll meet along the way....
So you were 12 years old when you left? That must've been fuckin' great....unless I counted wrong :p

Yes your a whiz at math..lol
I grew up in foster homes and couldn't stand being told what to do...so I left alot.
I first saw Larry when I was 12, and then I lived with him when I was 13 and 14.
he is 13 years older than me.
He never asked me at the time how old I was...and I never told.

But of course it did...lol
She's a drummer in a band...First Page...local Boston band...thats why she's dressed that way.
Hey George, I just noticed your sig...Richie stayed at our house for 3 days at Earth peoples park..he came up to perform for a festival to raise tax money for the commune, and Larry had built one of the few houses up there at the time...he's a cool guy, very mellow and friendly.
