For the villagers at Rumuekpe on the Niger Delta, Shell's gas flare is part of daily life. It burns day and night to the sound of hissing gas. The air is thick with sooty particles that stick to skin, clothes and food.

Polluting land and ruining lives, gas flaring in Nigeria is just one of the devastating impacts of the oil industry, which fuels conflict, death and destruction around the world.
It doesn't have to be this way. We believe it is time for government to take a lead - and stop investing in the damage and destruction oil causes.
The British Government gives institutions such as the EBRD and the World Bank loans in the name of "development”.
In reality such loans prop up the oil industry, driving exploitation and the trashing of the environment.
