[Don't read if you have any intention of reading "The Pilgrimage" by Paulo Coelho, either that or skip the third and fourth paragraphs, these do not include what is in brackets.]
When you do a spell, ask yourself this: Why do you want to do it?
I have noticed quite a few spell requests and the first thing that springs to mind is that there just seems to be no point. How, I think, would a spell help you.
Paulo Coelho spent a heck of a long time trecking through the Pyrenees and through north Spain to get his sword (his ritual tool in magickal tradition he was in). Throughout the entire trip he never thought why he wanted it, all he could think about was getting it, and then later how to get it.
His guide told him he would get it when he discovers the secret of his sword. At the end he realised the secret of his sword and that is that he hadn't to clarify why, he then wrote down exactly why he wanted it and left it under a rock. The next thing that happens is that he gets his sword.
If you clarify why you want it then go for it, if not then think about why and then decide whether it has any purpose or not. Most of the experienced members here can count on their left hand hand how many spells they've done since coming to this conclusion.
Also you'll find there's normally a much more mundane of getting what you want. And another thing is that you can go for essence if you do decide to do a spell, and the results will be much more fruitful, even if a bit surprising.
When I say go for essence, I mean: Instead of wishing for money, wish for the security that it brings, instead of wishing for that girl/guy you like, wish for the companionship and love you want. You might find that you get money, you might find you get the security just from a sense of trusting the universe to support you. You might get the girl/guy you had you're eye on, someone else who is better for you might come along.
The trick is to remain receptive to what the universe has to offer in terms of what you want. You won't get security if all you can think about money. You might miss your perfect match by fixing your eye on the one you like, at least to the extent where you can't see anyone else.
Blessings
