View Full Version : Hippie Reunion?

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Did you live in the Haight in the 60's or 70's?

Are you interested in a reunion to see who is still alive and what we have done since then?

Will we meet again to talk about the far out times we had? Did you know or do you still know some of my friends from that time?

There was handsom Jake, Eddie Baker who got shot by the pigs for selling a little pot, Tuda (pronounced Two-Day), Loren McDowell who saved my life when I drowned in the South Fork of the Yuba river near Nevada City, California after an all day and all night acid trip, or Roy Dilley who tried to revive me, or Janis Joplin who I met in the doorway of a liquor store in Haight Ashbury, drinking a bottle of ripple hidden in a brown paper bag.

There was Kathy who changed her name to Judith Ann. There was Judy Hamud and Will and Laura Tarbox or Safara who had the children Sidhartha, Orpheus and Mariha (the wind). I didn't spell the right did I? Where is Sam Andrew who played guitar for Big Brother and gave me a ride one night when I was hitch hiking?

Did you know the black man named Mistery or any of us who went to Morningstar or Wheeler's ranch or North San Juan or North Columbia? Did you meet Sue the witch?

To be continued...Peace Brother, Roger Wheeler.

Hey Roger, welcome to the board and good luck in your search for these people.

I was going to post a thread about this myself. Are any of the other older hippies interested in finding their old pals? Maybe Skip should introduce a new section where the older hippies can post lists of people they used to know and would like to catch up with. I mean it must have been such a special experience; even if only to see what happened to everyone on that long and arduous path to the present day.

Dear shameless_heifer

Thank you for your reply. I remember the Good Earth Commune but I don't remember where it was. I hope to hear from other brothers and sisters that where there at or near the same time I was. Do you remember the cop named Sgt. Sunshine? He patroled the Haight, got a broken arm then ended up on the Hall of Justice steps protesting marijuana?

Roger

Dear purplesage

Thank you very much for your reply. It has been many years since the hayday of the Haight Ashbury days but the time I spent there and the friends and experiences I had there can never completely fade away. I know some of the friends I met there have passed away. But I also know there are others who are surely still alive and well and maybe, just maybe we can connect again. It has been more than 38 years since I decided to hitchhike from central Illinois to LA and then on to Sunset Strip to see what was happening to "our" generation. To be continued......Best Regards, Roger.

For this to happen I believe your best bet is to get some of the famous people who did the summer of love in the Haight to put together a reunion. Members of The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Robert Crumb, anyone else you can think of?

I've seen a website by a chick who used to hang out on the Sunset Strip. I don't believe she was famous but she did run with a lot of famous/infamous people. I'll see if I can find it for you. She is also asking about what happened to a lot of people she knew, and she had a pretty massive list. Unfortunately a certain proportion of them have turned out to be deceased.

Anyone know any of the original STP Family? The ones I really loved - most have passed on - but I just know there must be a few still kickin' around. Does anyone remember them? We mostly went between snafranciso, east village and boulder. Does anyone remember Zak, Hawkus, Bette Boop, Janice? STP John (my beloved), Roach (Josh), Wheatgerm (Adam), Little Brother, Deputy Dawg - they've all moved on to the great beyond.

It seems to me I remember STP John, Roach and Wheatgerm. Didn't they usually go barefoot on Haight Street? Do I remember one or more of them with a dog that had a red skarf around its neck? Peace, Roger.

Green, Saffron, Nancy Noone, Shelly Stone, Michael or Arlene Wright, Yogi (Ron Carr) and girls from San Jose I met when I was living on Oregon Creek off Hiway 49 just north of North San Juan, California, Mona Duran, Laurie Robinson and Moira (or Moyra). Thanks again, Roger.

I bet you do remember them. STP John had such an angelic "aura" - a truly gentle man. Roach and Wheatgerm, ah, how to describe? Crazy, irreverant, irrisistable, rugged and earthy. I'm thinkin' it was Ronald McDonald's dog, but then that doesn't seem quite right either.

Thanks!!

I have a scrap book of photos and an 8mm movie I took in the late 60's. As soon as I get a chance I will go through it and see if I can find any pictures of them. If so I will post them here. Thanks again, Roger.

You people should start a Summer of Love Reunion website where people who were there in 1967 can sign the guestbook, write about their experiences in the Haight and what they've been doing since then, post then and now photos of themselves, etc. Great way for the genuine original hippies to reconnect!

Also, here a couple of Yahoo groups just getting started:

Dear Holly

I am so sorry I have not sent you the photos I have from the 60's. This is the most busy time of the year for me. I sell Wyoming gifts on the internet and this is the time of the year when a lot of orders come in. After Christmas I will go over to my mother's home, open the box labeled "archives" and dig out the photo album from Haight Ashbury. I have also checked with a local company about dubbing my 8mm film to VHS and DVD. I took that film in 1969 at a Love In at the Polo Fields in San Fransisco's Golden Gate Park. That was the first performance of Alice Cooper in SF I believe.

Best Regards,
Roger in Casper, Wyoming

Although I was in the LA area in 1973-75, I was in Santa Monica-- you may be able to find your friends through the Rainbow Family site, however. I'll post a link next time I'm here, but the site is called Welcome Here.
For those fortunate enough to be located out west, there are annual Gatherings of the Family, and you could most likely hook up there.
Here are a couple photos from this year's shindig. Maybe you'll recognize somebody. If not, check out welcomehere.org because there's a slide show there with almost 200 pictures.
Nice to meet you, Brother.

I wasn't there at that time brother, but wish I could have been. I envy anyone who was able to get to San Francisco during those times. But, I am soon going to visit Haight Ashbury this summer. Can't wait, want a picture of the sign with me standing in front of it. It means the world to me.

Good luck on your search for the people you are looking for and peace to you.

Dear Acid Queen,

Thank you very much for your reply. There was a time...a very lovely time...in the city of LOVE...San Francisco. It was a time when the beautiful people from all over the US and the World came together to celebrate Peace and Love. I hope it will happen again. I can remember when I first arrived in "The City". I had hitched a ride (hitch hiked) from Hollywood. As I walked along Haight Street someone said "Are you hungry?" and stuck the end of a sandwitch in my mouth. A while later someone said "Open your mouth" and they placed a tab of acid on my tounge. Did I spell that right? As the night arrived someone else came along and said "Do you need a place to crash (do you need a place to sleep)". Well of course I did. And that was only the first day! There is no way to put into print the true experience of those times. You had to live it. However, you can get an idea by the writings here and by other postings of how it was. I sincerely hope we can again celebrate those beautiful time we have celebrated before.

Peace and Love Sister,
Roger

JelenaDear Jelena,

It was summer, 1966. I was just about fed up with life in Illinois. I knew I was leaving, I just didn’t know when. At the graduation ceremony, as the principle handed me my diploma, he stared at me. Or should I say, he stared at my hair. Yes, it was long. Too long for then and there. It touched the top of my ears. Or just maybe it was just barely over them. It was not the right length. Why was it that I, not like most, not like I should be, not like a "good boy", have hair like that? What was I thinking? Why did I not have a crew cut, or butch haircut like I should? A nice, clean, respectable haircut, greased down with Brill Cream or standing erect with the aid of Butch Wax. Both products where readily available and I should have known about them. After all, we only had three channels then. And all in black and white. And both products advertised on all channels. Of course I knew what was expected.. But was it "right".

What gave me the right to question? What gave me the right to ask? Young men had died in World War II to save our country. Was I not willing to do the same now to save us, the United States of America, from the threat of Viet Nam? It was my duty to kill the Vietnamese. It was my duty to prevent the world takeover by the communists. Was I a coward who was not willing to die for my country?

No. I was not a coward then and I am not a coward now. A coward can’t say no. When I did say no to an unjust war, the war in Vietnam, my father was livid with anger. I can remember that day at the kitchen table. I remember it well. It was 38 years ago. He was a veteran of World War II. He said "I can’t believe you won’t fight for this country". His eyes welled up with tears. He had come from a different generation. Well, so did I. It was not a pleasant moment. He did the right thing at that time, his time. But it was my time now. The Vietnamese had not attacked us. The Threat? If they won then the whole of southeast Asia would go communist. Well guess what? It did not happen. He did the right thing and so did I.

That was it. The final straw. I could not stay in his house after that. He just didn’t get it. It was not World War II all over again. The draft was on and the youth of this nation where sent as cannon fodder to die in "glory" to protect us from the threat of being overtaken by the communists. Classmates where coming back in body bags. It was time to act.

Headlines appeared in the local newspaper. Not just our paper, but papers around the USA and around the World. "Hippies Riot In LA". There was a bus. The hippies had turned it over. In Los Angeles, on Sunset Strip in Hollywood.. I had to go. I wanted, or should I say, my goal in life was to become a surfer with long hair on the southern California beaches. It was November in the year of our lord 1966. I packed my bag, a small suitcase, and had about $30 in my pocket, and I hit the road.

TO BE CONTINUED...

Peace and Love,

Roger

I remember The Haight in 66'. I was prolly sleeping in a doorway on Haight Street when you got there jaclalope. I was raised in Anahiem and had been to hollywood on many occations, in fact I worked at the Wiskey (using my sister's ID)for a while and danced on Leon Russell's piano on one of my vacations to So. Cali to hang out with my people.
I lived in the Haight on and off for 11 yrs. I spent a lot of time on Hippie Hill and stayed mostly in the neighborhood excepted when I'd go to China Town or North Beach or Market St. to panhandle for 'Spare Change' to get some fish-n-chips and a bottle of whatever.
I was a 'Street Hippie' for a few weeks there on my stairway overlooking haight st. I witnessed and experienced many strange and wonderful happenings on them stairs. I was invited in a house to stay got pregant/married/divorced and a few yrs later joined a commune there in the haight and raised my boy there for 3 yrs. We visited Oregon for a while and went back to the City to the commune. It was quite an adventure and learning experience. It was either you grow and learn or 'go home'. It was love peace and hippie beads for the most part, there in the 60's. Everyone was 'brother' 'sister' and did their part tho I mst add that we didn't take no shit either, we were peace lovers but we were not cowards. The 'Elders" would help 'enlighten' ones as they came along seeking truth. The truth being that we are all bros n sis's and that we are here to learn and grow, we are here to keep the peace and the earth clean, we are to behave civilized and help where and when we are needed and do it joyfully as this is our work, to live in harmony with the earth and it's inhabitence. So here we are AllONE coming from the same Source the ALL.
We of the 60's era pushed it as far as it would go. We were beaten and imprisioned and even killed for excersizing our 1st amendment and for protesting the war. We now had families to take care of and we yearned for the Garden. A lot of us , like myself have found their garden and are living peacefully tending to it.
I hear a lot ask, what we the old ones are doing about things now. Well in answer I'd like to say that most of us are old and not in the best of health. We have raised our kids and a lot of us are raising our grandkids. We oldies are mostly on social security now or disability and some po' sobs are still out there 'humpin' it' trying to make a living outa piss poor wages but we still have the vibe that keeps the beat going. The movement never died, it was just laying low and working 'underground'. The youth is starting to put their energy forth once again and the elders are preparing a place/places to gather, striving for like mindedness in a communal endevor to create community/townships type setting, living off the grid and in harmony with the earth. They are begining to surface once again and are in need of positive energy and a hard fulfilling workforce. There is a need for purchase money for additional land and there is a need of more people to build and live in and take part in the community(s).This would be an excelent place to begin if one was wanting to be part of changing things and living as was intended in peace and harmony.
I know.. I need to end this long post, so consider it ended.. Blessed Be.

Dear Shameless,

Thank you for your comments. I happened to be on Sunset Strip in maybe November, 1966. I think Sonny and Cher where playing there around that time. My first time in Whiskey A Go Go I was surprised at the cost. Wasn't there a two drink minimum per hour or show and the cheapest way to go was a coke in a tiny thin glass for $1.25 each. That was a lot of money then for a poor, young boy from near Peoria.

Do you remember the conga drummers on Hippie Hill not far from the east entrance of Golden Gate Park? Sometimes I would see Pan the pipemaker there working on his massive communal pipes that could hold a lid or more. Did you get your fish and chips down near the end of Haight Street? They wrapped them in newspaper on the outside and had vineger if you wanted it. They had a long line outside much of the time.

Do remember the gal that ran Love Burgers in the entrance to a bar on Haight and not far from the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic?

Do you remember the Straight Theater or the time the street was closed and the Greatful Dead put on a concert? Can you remember Eddie Baker who was killed by the pigs about 1968-9 in his apartment on Page Street I think. If you where there all that time we must have met or at least seen one another. It won't be long and I will post some of the photos I have from that time.

Dear Audrey Anne,

Thank you for your reply.

I did not know well or was a friend of any of the Family Dog members or Chet Helms. However, I can remember meeting him at a concert I went to the Avalon Ballroom with my girlfriend Victoria in Late 1966 or 1967-68. That night the Velvet Underground was playing. I also saw Chet outside a Family Dog house somewhere in SF but I don't remember exactly where. It as too long ago. Do you have any pictures of then or now to post?

I also remember the band Big Brother and the Holding Company after Janis Joplin died. I had seen them in the late 60's and even met Janis. Sam Andrew, the bass player, had given me a ride when I was hitch hiking. After that about 1972-73 I went to see Big Brother in a small club near Sacramento. I remember seeing Big Brother playing with Kathy McDonald as their lead singer. During a break they agreed to have some nose candy. It helped Kathy since she had a toothe ache at the time. Peace and Love, Roger.

I was at Wheeler's Ranch a bit before you made your visit, I think. Just before or after a lot of crazy stuff went on. Wheeler's ol' lady had a baby and they made an omelette with the placenta and ate it! Like wild animals do! That is... eat the afterbirth! But without the eggs. I guess it is supposed to help the mom return to normal. Talk about strange!

Then there was the famous raid by the pigs. They flew their jack-booted thugs into the ranch by helicopter to slide down ropes and catch the draft dodgers. What a bunch of assholes. The pigs that is. Wanted to send more 18-20 year old boys to die in Vietnam. Just like today with the assholes in power, they want the young boys and now the young girls too, preferable poor and not to bright, to die for an illegal and immoral "war".

They had just bulldozed Lou Gotlieb's Morningstar ranch not far away in Sebastopol, if I spelled that right? It doesn't quite look right to me. Does anybody know? Let me know then.

Dear Past, Present and Future Hippies,

What are you doing here? What have you done to better our lives here in the USSA, yes, USSA like USSR (do you remember?) and the world? You sit there in front of your computer and you type messages from one to another and you change nothing.

Dear Audreyanne,

Thank you for your reply. Optimism:

Main Entry: op·ti·mism
Pronunciation: 'äp-t&-"mi-z&m
Function: noun
Etymology: French optimisme, from Latin optimum, noun, best, from neuter of optimus best; akin to Latin ops power —more at OPULENT (aol://4344:1708.D0047968.40156002.672503464/)
Date: 1759
1 : a doctrine that this world is the best possible world
2 : an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome
- op·ti·mist /-mist/ noun
- op·ti·mis·tic /"äp-t&-'mis-tik/ adjective
- op·ti·mis·ti·cal·ly /-ti-k(&-)lE/ adverb

Optimism is good. But without action it is dead. The way to change is through action. Most folks these days take no action toward change. If we really want to better this world then we need to take action. That can include sitting behind the secure world of one's own personal computer. But to really affect change then we need go beyond that. We need to contact all of our elected officials. We need to take to the streets. We need to call and email all of our friends to do the same.

To be continued....Peace and Love, Roger.

love your country, fear your govermentMy Dear steffan or hunter,

Or whatever your name may be? My I suggest that you, at the very least, go back to elementary school, if you ever attended school, and obtain your eighth grade diploma? Anyone can see from your above post that you lack the basic skills needed for effective commuication in the English language. This includes grammer, spelling and basic composition.

You obviously have no knowledge of the subject matter you have replied to and can't offer any real options to our dilemma.

Main Entry: di·lem·ma
Pronunciation: d&-'le-m& also dI-
Function: noun
Etymology: Late Latin, from Late Greek dilEmmat-, dilEmma, probably back-formation from Greek dilEmmatos involving two assumptions, from di- + lEmmat-, lEmma assumption —more at LEMMA (aol://4344:1708.D0039244.40147278.672503236/)
Date: 1523
1 : an argument presenting two or more equally conclusive alternatives against an opponent
2 a : a usually undesirable or unpleasant choice <faces this dilemma: raise interest rates and slow the economy or lower them and risk serious inflation> b : a situation involving such a choice <here am I brought to a very pretty dilemma; I must commit murder or commit matrimony —George Farquhar>; broadly : PREDICAMENT (aol://4344:1708.D0053900.40161934.672503606/) <lords and bailiffs were in a terrible dilemma —G. M. Trevelyan>
3 a : a problem involving a difficult choice <the dilemma of "liberty versus order" —J. M. Burns> b : a difficult or persistent problem <unemployment … the great central dilemma of our advancing technology —August Heckscher>
- dil·em·mat·ic /"di-l&-'ma-tik also -"dI-/ adjective
usage Although some commentators insist that dilemma be restricted to instances in which the alternatives to be chosen are equally unsatisfactory, their concern is misplaced; the unsatisfactoriness of the options is usually a matter of how the author presents them. What is distressing or painful about a dilemma is having to make a choice one does not want to make. The use of such adjectives as terrible, painful, and irreconcilable suggests that dilemma is losing some of its unpleasant force. There also seems to be a tendency especially in sense 3b toward applying the word to less weighty problems <solved their goaltending dilemma —Pat Calabria>.

I knew Mystry both in the Height in general and when he stayed for a brief while at one of our houses at Good Earth. From Wheelers Pancho, Baker Bart, Coyote, Rita, and Sunshine were brothers & sisters equally a part of Wheelers and Good Earth. I also remember Silent Steve and his runs to town for icecream. :)

I heard Silent Steve died from cancer last yr.. I knew all you hippies from the haight (mostly) and a lot that went up to wheelers, and morningstar.. I lived at Good Earth Commune for several yrs and am delighted to be reunited with them now..
Rita you came to the Haight with me and Jomie aka heifers_calf in 67 or 68.. I remember your black ford Galaxie and that you gave it to me when you left for the rushing river? to open your resturant, The Primrose Cafe.
I remember also Rita, that GA GA shot it up on the side of the interstate when him and jimmy the painter were taking my sister Marty to the airport after jerry beat her head in with a shotgun and threw her down the stairs of upstairs of underhouse.
I belive it was Jimmy Count and GaGa that was there, Gaga shot the car and the pigs in the sky were circling the galaxie with their spot light on. They ( jimmy count and gaga ) split and me n Marty hitched a ride to the airport. They followed the dudes back to the Haight and BUSTED Jimmy for excaping Quentin a few yrs eariler.
I heard that Jimmy was living down on the so cali coast.. probbly Venis Beach.. thats where his old stompings grounds were and his mama lived close to there, we stoped in to see her one day when me, jimmy and Diane went to visit our folks. Jimmy's mom in LA, Dianes peeps in Woodland Hills and my folks in Anahiem. That was a trip..
Ranger me and Rita hooked up again over a year ago, she saw my message in the Diggers forum. The Spud contacted me and the Wild Bill and now you.. the Blessings keep pouring in.
I remember when Sunshine got hit with a brick or a bottle on Cole St and everyone was on the street and a roit almost broke out. I went up to Ash Valley right after that with Jimmy to see Diane and Shills and our other bros n sis's up there.
The Haight was getting hot by then and the Black Panthers had moved in. John the Barber joined the family and brought in the black panthers and the Good Earth was no longer a place to call home.
The Blue Meenies came right after I got back from the Valley and that's when the Pigs came in and busted us all up.. I went to jail for 5 days and they took jomie to child haven. When I got out they wouldn't let me have jomie back, so me and amazon linda went up there and got him at gun point.
We fled to the Oak street house and CPS and the pigs came looking for us. Someone grabed me and Jom and took us out the excape route.. out a window over fewnces throgh one house out another window and into toothless jimmy's and dorys house.
We were then placed in a trunk and slipped into, what was mouse mans truck's name.. anyway went got down the block and around the corner and they let us out of the trunk and we drove by the cops on the way to the airport to get me n jom back to so cali. it was scary.

Dr, there is a very strong possibility that we have met.

Got busted by the time the story got to me it was that Ga Ga and Jimmy were on a bus and someone stepped on his toe and GaGa pulled iron thereby getting Painter Jimmy busted. Sounded possible at the time. *L* It still amazes me that after escaping from Quentin Jimmy lived for at least two years at the hottest corner in the Haight and became well known as a mural painter until he went somewhere with GaGa! A community "safty commitee" consisting of Bull (Tarus Larry) and a few of the boys later 'asked" GaGa to leave town.
[QUOTE=shameless_heifer]"I remember when Sunshine got hit with a brick or a bottle on Cole St and everyone was on the street and a riot almost broke out."

"Someone grabed me and Jom and took us out the excape route.. out a window over fences throgh one house out another window and into toothless jimmy's and dorys house."
>Ahhh yes, Eden later wrote a song titled "Lower Back Page" about that backdoor.

"We were then placed in a trunk and slipped into, what was mouse mans truck's name.."
>I don't remember the name of the truck either, but the bus (which Wendy still claims he owes her for *L*) was named "the Starship" and that was back when the "Jefferson Airplane" was still the Airplane. A couple of years ago when I last saw MouseMan it was still around Oregon.

I moved to San Francisco in 1985 and lived there for four years. I used to spend my summers there during the late 70s and early 80s before deciding to live there. By the time the 80s were ending, the dot com made housing impossible to afford and jobs scarce to find. I go back two or three times a year.

I never did drugs or get drunk. The only reasons I ever went to the Haight were to look around Mendel's Far Out Fabrics go to All You Knead for breakfast (or the Pork Store Cafe) and to buy tea and coffee and a tea and coffee shop that is now -- sadly -- out of business.

Back stage main stage (west stage) you wil find many of the folks from the Lyon Street House and the Shady Groove/US Cafe the group that along with Good Earth Commune and others started the fair.

Ranger, They were on the Haight Street Bus, yes I recall they just got off the bus coming from where they shot up me and Rita's car and they caught the bus back to the Haight and me n Marty went on to the airport. Someone did step on GaGa's foot and he pulled the piece he was firing at the pig in the sky and when they stepped off the busthe pigs surrounded them and carted Jimmy off to City Prison and then on back to Quinten. Me and Ellen the Felon and another lady went to visit Jimmy there and brought him a bag that we passed when I gave him a big wet one. That was the last I saw of Jimmy. He was like my brother.. I wrote him for a few years and he sent me some of his art work. I lost contact with him and I have tried to goggle him all over the place.. same went for GE and now.. wooohooo I have found my lost tribe.. Thank you Goddess.

Rita, at the end the black panthers did come into the GE, after the white panthers had started moving on, to Oregon and other places like NM and Ari. John the Barber brought them in. They turned on him later as did GE. There was a lot of new people coming in there at the end. When I left in 77 or 78 it was pretty bad on the streets and there was Chaos at GE.
After the BIG bust when they stormed Oak St House, White House and Underhouse things started to get mean in the neighborhood. I left the Haight for a while till things calmed down and when I returned it wasnt the same. Most all the regulars had moved andthere was barely any one I knew hanging out. It was a sad time for the Haight.

Merry Meet Audreyanne,
The last time I was in 'The City" was in 77'78' cant remember which (ha). I traveled around for a while all over the south west and came to know a lot of ones that were looking for the light.
We all come to places of the spirit were love love love resides. To share this phennonen (sp) of which brought us here together on this vast plane we call earth, to gather in spirit to battle the forces of evil or vile intent.
The Family of ones that found a whole place of being together now and forever,we came to learn lifes lessons and to relate to the love that is here for us to hold and charish. I know you woman, I know your spirit we, have crossed fathomless depths together on our journy to enlightenment in the quest for truth.
I am ever joyfull of your presents here in the forums, the circle of Love Love Love broadens as each one of us takes our place.
Blessed Be for the Love that stays forever strong in the hearts and souls of our bretheren.
I am lifted up in the spirit as I see us coming together again at last. JOY JOY JOY.

I find this thread hard to believe! I was a member of Hip Forums over three years ago, and the first thing I did was post a thread on OLD HIPPIES asking if there was anyone out there from The Summer of Love (1967) in San Francisco-- NEVER say "Frisco"-- you'll get yo ass kicked!

Anyhow, nobody in 6 months posted-- except Angel, and she was in L.A.in 1973, which didn't count. At least to me. (She met John, of course, but in 1967 it was George Harrison and Patti who visited the Haight. I heard the news on the street, but ignored it figuring it was just more pot-head wishful thinking. I was wrong.)

Ahem! Where was I?

Right!

Now, after I rejoined Hip Forums, having been missing for almost 2 years, I find dozens of old Haightites (to coin a word; just don't try to spend it.) Groovy, as some used to say back in the day (not me, though: I was never much for slang; the King's English suits me just fine.)

Great! I don't know how many young kids passed through the Haight that summer, but it must have been a 100,000, maybe. Some for a weekend; some for a year; some never left; some died, either that summer or later.

Now, I will digress: Many years later, in Pennsylvania, I was arrested for DUI. Naturally, I had to attend AA lectures and such. During one of these brain-washing sessions some learned wutz-fiddle began talking about drugs and he saw me sneering. "I guess you know about drugs," the expert asked. " I don't do them anymore , but I forgot more than you ever knew," I informed the irritating wickerbill. " I lived in Haight-Ashbury and Greenwich Village for three years in the 60's." His jaw dropped.

Back to the chase. My friend, Nat, and I drove across the country in a 1950 Chevy with no back seat, no inspection, and no insurance. It took us 5 days, 5 gallons of oil and we thought it was outrageous to pay 60 cents a gallon for gas in the middle of the Utah desert.

We lived at 63 (I think) Octavia St., at the foot of Haight St., right up from the tail of Market. We used to take my old hot-wired wreck and buy dozens of copies of THE BERKELEY BARB, THE ORACLE, and another hippie-ragsheet who's name escapes me right now, and go down to Chinatown or Fisherman's Wharf or The Coit Tower and sell them to the tourists. Three hours of work (?), and we made $7 or $8 apiece-- plenty for food, cigarettes, beer and a dollar a day apiece for the rent--$55 a month. Unfortunately, we were living in a crystal palace managed by 2 gays and it was a 24 hour circus.

Eventually, Nat left alone, but I remained for another 3 months-- picking tomatoes with migrant workers, fixing cars (mostly hot-wiring them), and selling papers, though that tapered off after Labor Day. I returned home by thumb after the Death of Hippie March, of which I was a pallbearer.

Jesus! I get carried away-- I haven't been drunk for a week, worked half the day rebuilding a barn, got caught in the rain and now I'm catching up. BARKEEP! (Me) ANOTHER ROUND!

As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted by some beered-up lout, I remember a lot of faces from 1967 Haight-Ashbury, but am bad on names-- hell, it's been 38 years. But I remember Woody from NYC (I knew him there, too.) Bruce from Spokane-- he drove me there and paid to fly me back to S.F. Thanks, Bruce! H. Rap Brown who was on the lam, then--scared the shit out of me. Kathy, an older woman (by 10 years) who gave me my first dose of clap. The 4 college kids from Kansas State who crashed a few days when I lived briefly in the Fillmore until the landlord went ape-shit. Ahhhhh... I could go on and on and sound like some old bore. I'm only 58,but my kids already get glazed eyes when I get into the oldie-but-goody trot down memory lane. I guess it's the price for still breathing and having a few remaining brain-cells, yuk, yuk.

RE-UNION? I'm up for it. By the way, I was known as Bungo, then. From the Village via Pennsylvania. Where I am now.

Later, man.

I was a runaway in the late 60's and lived in the back of an artists studio on Haight with a couple other kids. Every morning we would tramp down to the Filmore District to eat at the Black Panthers Free Breakfast. They were my hero's. I stayed a couple months and then left to join some friends on a commune in Oregon.

Roach and Wheatgerm were friends of mine. Roach (real name is *****, Riversong, not Josh) moved to the Haight from Anaheim. He met Wheatgerm there and they became inseparable friends. When I spent time in the Haight, I'd crash at their place. Sometime in 1968 or 69 they hooked up with another guy named Eddie and all three of them got into shooting reds (Seconol)... It got ugly. The story I heard was that one night Eddie OD'd on reds and went unconscious. They thought, in their seriously muddled condition, that speed would bring him around. While Eddie was unconscious, they shot him up with some meth. Apparently that killed Eddie. Roach and Wheatgerm didn't know he was dead.. took him to a hospital. The hospital called the police. That's the last I heard of either of them. If anybody knows whether either of them are dead or alive, I'd love to hear. Knowing their "on the edge" lifestyle, I wouldn't be surprised to learn they're no longer with us. The photo you posted, DrJ, isn't Roach. It might be Wheatgerm, but I can't remember. Roach was much shorter, long dark hair.

I lived in Anahiem for a long time growing up, I left for The Haight when I was 16, thumbing a ride up 101. It was quite an adventure I must say.
I sure did learn a lot about life, people and 'other' ways of living and being real. It was certainly a time of changes. Haight/Ashbury was Utopia. There was so much freedom, no rules really, just be cool and don't start no shit! But of course where there is good energy there is bad. I saw a lot of bad in the 11 yrs I was there, but some how I managed to come out in one peice with most of my brain cells. How that happened I only can only call Divine Intervention bc I surely used more drugs then the average teenager. But it wasn't all drugs, there were so many wonderful adventures and lessons along the way. So much love and unity back then. People really seemed to care about each other and the planet we reside on. Yes, a time of change it was. I don't know if it happened to us or we happen to it, but man o man it was a trip.
Off to work I go.. Hi Ho Hi Ho..
Be sweet

Later, man.Dear Bungo

Thanks a lot for your post. I too have not been on here for quite some time. That is, even though I started it.

I am very sorry I don't think we met in the Haight. But who knows, maybe we will. I am going to get a place here in Wyoming where people are welcome to come.

Best Regards,
Roger

To interject here for a moment.

I'm the moderater of this forum. I am not drunk, whacked out on drugs or otherwise incapacitated. I can read and comprehend what I read. I may have only gone to the 8th grade but I did further my education in other areas that interested me.
I hold 5 certificates in alternitive healing and I'm nobodys fool.

Why would you think that the forums would be unsurvailed, when there are cameras on every street corner, even in the tiniest of towns. They have mechanisums that can see through the friggin walls, and other's that can hear every word you speak.

Out of 1/4 of a million people that come in here, none of them are narks/informers!?! I mean if you want to incrimidate yourself, fine, by all means, but to incrimidate someone else is perhaps another story. A tale from the past could interfere with someones future. Ya know what I mean!!

Well that's all I have to say about that.

Something I always say...Expect the BEST and prepare for the WORST.

I too have things in my past am not proud of....while I don't regret anything, except maybe not appreciating that my kids would grow up WAY TOO FAST, I don't put certain things OUT THERE.

I have had things I said in innocence and maybe ignorance come back and bite me square in the ass.

So probably the best thing is to keep others names unto them...and let them decide if they want to have their real name in the "papers"...

As far as the THUD goes....hell ,we ALL know his name....and some of us even know his number....

The tales we could tell, the things we saw and did. We were in the midst of a changing time. It was like a fairy tale looking back, some good, some bad. But all in all a time that will stay forever embedded in my heart, mind and body.
I talk to kids these days about The Haight and they never heard of it. They've heard the music but not The Place. I thought it strange.
Most of us grew from our experiences and settled down with faimlies and homes. We found other places to be and grew from them also.. For us things haven't changed much, still the same ole trees in the yard and the same ole garden to plant. It's like time stands still here, except for the trailers poping up everywhere and the cameras on the red lights things have stayed pretty much the same.
We have now moved into our parents slot and our children into ours, funny how life renews itself. Our gradbabies are going to be like we were. It always seems to skip a generation.

That's what I meant by seeing into the house Gate.. Man.. And just think about all thoes gadgets on TV. They all use to be Top Secret, now they are an everyday occurence, I dread to think of what they have beyond that, that is Top Secret now..
I know the inventor of the listening devise did not mean for it to be used against us for just smoken it'.. I know this bc the inventor was my Father. He worked for the space program, he was working on the Minute Man when he made it in our garage in Anahiem. When he showed us how it worked ( I was 9 I think) my Mother told him to distroy it bc we could hear what the people were saying next door. She thought it was evil, and I suppose she was right, as things turned out. Daddy was working on Satilites,Computers and Comunications.
When comunication when down on Appolo NASA sent a helicopter to get my Father in the middle of the night to fix it. After returnning to Earth the Astronauts sent him a letter of graditude, they all signed it along with the President ( nixon).
Daddy was cool though he wanted what we all did, to get back to the land. To live freely and love one another. He would have made a awesome Guru. He was beyond his time.

Surprising how close those helicopters have come and missed everything.Perhaps they're just not interested in small timers around here, perhaps i'm just lucky,or perhaps they aren't as advanced as they claim.Anyhoots, doing it legally now as far as the states concerned. If the feds don't like it they can trace me down through the paperwork involved, but they;ve yet to do that to anybody.
Those listening devices are pretty interesting. They work well enough to be scary.
My dad was a conservationest and a soil scientist. The number of job offers he had from arab governments was unreal.I could have easily grown up in Pakistan or Iran.No telling where that journey could have ended.i might of ended up on that plane looking for my 17 virgins.i'd never find them in this country. All in all i guess it's better to worry about a few damn helicoopters. It's just a good thing i don't have a f'n gun.Pass the power...top of the morning to ya...peace

Funny story-
I was born in 57 so I could only observe the hey day of the 60's from the porthole of the media under my parents roof. I read about the scene in San Francisco and dreamed of running away to join in on the freedom. When I was 19 I moved to LA, but the true hippie days were on their way out. Disco was hot and punk and "new wave" was on the rise.
I think it was in '79 I drove up to San Fransico, knowing full well that the vibe I was hoping to be there was long gone, which it was.
I stopped and stood stoned at Haight and Ashbury, and looked around, trying to imagine what it was like "in the day".
Suddenly, from a second floor window across from me a fat man shouted out at me, - "what are you looking for? All the hippies are gone! They're all dead, or in jail or faded away,- or they cut their hair turned republican! There's nothing to see here young man, you missed it!"

Fortunately, in the latter part of the 80's I dated a girl for about 4 years who had the hook up with The Grateful Dead. Back stage passes at all the shows. Got a taste of the times during that brief revival of the spirit. Got to meet Jerry and a lot of other famous and non-famous fabulous people. Now those days are history, but I'm "grateful" for the memories.

I lived at 104 Frederick Street, two blocks up and two blocks over from the Haight-Ashbury intersection and at the bottom of the hill (Masonic & Frederick) that led up to Buena Park from the west side. Lived there from 1958 to 1961. Was baptised at the Episcopal church there on Waller St. where Delmar St. ends. San Fransisco was the absolute best place to live at that time. The Haight area was a nice but low-rent area and my Dad was a low ranked soldier stationed at the Presidio at the time. He played the bagpipes for the Army's Pipe and Drum Corp there. Cushy job. My brother was born at Letterman Army Hospital. The Palace of Fine Arts was the best place to play at. Golden Gate Park and the Panhandle were also great places to play at (rented bikes there and played little league baseball there) and Fisherman's Wharf was a really cool place to hangout at. Use to have suicide runs down Masonic Ave in a little red wagon and could only stop the damn thing by running into the side of a building. SF has some seriously steep hills. As a precursor to the coming hippie crowd, a lot of beatniks lived in the neighborhood, but I remeber everyone being nice to eachother and it was safe to walk around the neighborhood after dark and being safe. Use to walk down Haight to the Boys Club where we'd skate on the roof and swim in an indoor pool. Rides on the Cable Cars were a treat. Sausilito was a fun getaway place. Wonderful memories of old SF. Miss it. It was what we wish cities were like today. Glad I was there. So cool, so cool. Wow!

I lived at Page and Cole, in a flat with Mouseman and Annie Riley in 74-75...around the corner from the White house, where Lizard and a bunch of others lived. I also lived at the Fell St house with Ranger and Eden and Audreyanne and Scorpio Kenny and an ever-changing bunch of people, from 76-79 or so. Hey Dan, welcome to the forums. Great to see the family comin' in. I've been waiting a long time. I was hopeing more would show up, I was just hoping there were more of us left.
I am Nailcakes, I lived in underhouse with Shills, Count, Jimmy Painter and Whitney Kellog. I was at underhouse from 71 to 74, with my boy Jomie who was around 1 yrs old when we moved into underhouse.. I got to the Haight in 66 when I was 16.

I believe that a lot of the family had already moved to Ash Valley in Oregon by 74/75. I was up there for a while in 73. I lived in Days Creek at the school marms old shack.,I left for a while in 74 and went to Arizona there I had my baby daughter.

I returned in 76 and left shortly afterwards. I found no more love on Haight St after that. I moved back to Texas where I was born in 77 and have been here on the farm since.

You'll find a few jack ass's in here, but for the most part ev1 is cool.

I had a recent incounter with some old family, How I have changed since the old daze. Where once I took it past the limit where anything goes short of murder. I haddnt a care or fear in the world.. I was a kickass hethen, scraping my way through the Haight, me and my boy against the world. But I grew past it.

As I grew into my womanhood, I realized that change was needed. I could not continue on the runaway course I had been following. I needed security and a real home to raise my kids in. The Haight was not the most ideal inviroment to raise kids in. After 75 The Haight turned to Junkie Row, it was bad before, but with most of the family in Oregon, there was hardly anyone left to keep the streets clean of junkies, ripoffs and pimps. I no longer felt safe in my beloved Haight. There was no one watching my back. I had been abandoned, left behind to fend for my self.

No big thing, I went to Texas and found what I traveled 2000 miles to find was right here all the time waiting for me to get my head out of my ass and come home.

I've learned a lot since then on how to be right with my universal flow. I found that the past is the past and things and people grow and change..I see some still stuck in the past, nomands traveling on the wind, with no place to call home. No place to lay down and rest their weary souls. No growth in experience or deed, just living off others and doing nothing to help or change their circumstance.

I don't know.. I want my own, We worked hard for what we have here and it hasn't been easy. A lot of sacrafice's have been made, a lot of compromise needed for balance. It was never handed out without a price attached to it. The point being, you have to get up off your ass no matter how much pain you think your in and do the doing of it and get it done.

Rarely are things set up for you in a nice tidy ribbon and presented without working towards your goals in life. If you have no goals to work towards you become parasitically stagnant and become a burden on someone else. A helping hand is one thing, but to expect a boat ride without rowing is unproductive.

As I sit in rememberence of my daze of thunder, I see the obstickles that waylaid me. The wrong turns I took off my righious path to inlightenment. I let the physical get in my way and blind me from knowing the truth, that I knew inside.

In my folly, searching for love in a place called Haight, I saw many things that I didn't understand or just didn't set well with my Spirit. Was this all happening to me or around me. I felt like an observer more then a partisapent. Always watching and learning. I saw things that would make your skin crawl, I saw other things that would swell up your heart in a huge ball of love that would melt the glaciers.

I wouldn't trade it but I certainly wouldn't want to relive it either, too much pain and sorrow. Your have to wade through a ton of bull shit just for one ounce of love. So long ago, so many trails of tears along the way.

There are so many things I want for us, the old ones, the originals.. I want for them what I have. A home, a place you can shut out the world by closing the door. Where you can walk in peace on your ground and greet your neighbor with a smile and love in your heart.

We should have made provisions in the earily daze for when we got old, but who would have thought that we would get this old. I know it never crossed my mind while I was partaking in the durg scene. But what of the ones that never found a home and are still wandering aimlessly around hoping to light someplace before they drop dead on the street. It breaks my heart.

Where is the Hippie Retirement Center. Why didn't we build one back then. We were surely a bunch of dumb ass's werent we, camparing to what we know now. We were on the right track but the durgs and casual sex was our undoing. So many fatherless childern came from our era, how irresponsible we were in our youth.

It was different for the men, they more or less came and when when they pleased, the women were left to fend for themselves and the kids. It was the women who carried the movement as far as it went, with their welfare and their food stamps. And that's the truth of the matter. How many men stayed with their ol ladys and kids back then. or even knew they had kids, bc of all the causal sex, a lot of women didn't even know who the father was, nor cared.

Was what we did back then, the undoing of our children today. I wonder.

Well enough of my ramblings

Have a blessed day
sh

SH,

Yup, the older I get the more I realize it's really true that youth is wasted on the young. Drugs and casual sex were effective enough distractions that few of us thought about what it would be like when we got older. Now as I watch my own kids grow up -- in a VERY different world -- I realize how important it is to give them a home and a sense of security. Lots of those fatherless kids we had running around had to grow up far too fast, figuring out at an early age that they had to be the parents to their dysfunctional parents....I'll never forget Sascha, a 7 y o boy, coming into my room at Page St to ask for some milk, telling me his mom Karen was out cold on smack. That's something no child should have to see. Most of those kids (including my own adult son) turned out just fine in spite of it all, thankfully.

I came to the Haight in 74, looking for the remnants of what I'd read about in Acid Test and Ringolevio, what I'd heard about from friends. Within a couple of months I realized I'd missed it, being born a few years too late to have lived that illusion. But I still have no regrets...it was a great time, a great place...and it's part of who I am and who I've become.

I was inducted into the hippie world at the tender age of 13, having older siblings I was exposed to the older crowd and the hippiie cutlure. I was pretty prepared for when I arrived in The Haight when I was 16 already married and divorced by 66, heading out to discover new adventures and learning.. It became so scattered that eirther ya got inside where it was safe and warm or ya'd get gobbled up by the wave of negitive forces that crawled out of the gutters after dark. I was fortunate to find refuge when I did. From earily 66 to late 67 The Haight changed faces. The love that we thought would carry us through was just an illusion, or was it a peek inside where mortal man should not have glimpst into. Which I believe was the undoing of ones like Emmit Grogan auther of Ringolevio and the most reconized leader of The Diggers and other incons of the earily daze of The Haight and Bezekly.
I saw that the intelectuals lived in Berkely and the radicals lived mostly in The Haight. There was a mix, but the high techs were mainly around the collages, lots of demonstraiters, war protests, rallys and polotics, the haight was living it on the front lines. The other side of The Movement, the ones that were living the solution being free to choose lifestyles to create a better inviroment for the earth and it's inhabitence. Some achived that awareness and moved to the country to find peace and security away from the drama that was going down in The Haight. When the heavy drugs and heavy guns came to Haight St., the love, peace and hippie beads moved to the woods.
I got out in time. I was fortunate to have survived. What we all did and things we saw on our trips to other dimentions changed us. We gained knowledge before our nointed time, we peeked. After that we became disillusioned with the time it was taking to bring about change. We skipped over a few generations of evelution and were left without guidence to the path to the next level, we advanced beyond our own technology. The rest of the world was not ready for what we had found in our journey and The Movement was suspended in air. Once you've seen the other side the illusion of Being human is just that, an illusion. Where do you go after that, ya can't go there unless you die or transend yourself there. It's like learning to walk before crawling, you become dysfunctional. I think that's what happen to us hippies. Cuz most of the ones left are just living day to day trying to make ends meet, not many have had a smooth road to the promised land,. Others took their exits earily and bypassed the reality of the illusion altogether. The realizeation being the illusion itself. Crying out, take me home mothership, I have seen the mountain and learned the truth of Being. I am ready now to go forward and concour other worlds.
I don't know why I stayed. I suppose I have things left to do. I don't recon I will find out till I take my exit and am done with this journey and on to the next.

Till then Brightest Blessings

This world is on its own path...we follow ours..it follows its....it is interwoven.
Every one of us is a thread...a fine fabric...with flaws.

I am not perfect, but I am a child of the big picture and have my own story as we each do. Its a ripple.
We touch each other in this life..perhaps the next.

All we can do is live our life to the fullest in our own perception of peace and love..I believe that is whats important. We touch each other, we spread our word, and we learn from each other.
We come back, we break free, we wait for one another....its a ripple...we throw thoughts out ,we accept, we learn from one another...at times we get hit with perverbial 2x4's..and we learn or we do not....we pull and cheer for each other.

we try, we fail, we suceed...we love. That damn humanisim that gets in our way Mary...well, I believe its SUPOSSED to...thats what makes us grow...we overcome that pesky stuff and it goes under our belts...we move on (above) it.

That is all we can do....round and round we go, the circle game.
We accept, we try.
we vow, we falter. we are human we are spiritual....we are stardust....

All we can do is better than we have,

I've had the song going around in my head for weeks and can't remember all the lyrics.. it's driving me mad mad mad.

Me and Martha took a honeymoon,
Down to Alcapolco by the silvery moon,
She was 18 and I was 22
now were just a doing what the young folks do.

We're going south,
to get that Alcapolco Gold,
There aint nothin' it can't fix,
Old dogs can learn new tricks,
When the streets are lined with bricks,
Of Alcapolco Gold.

Zim, zam, scotty watty ditim wotom do,
Hey diddle diddle twenty three scadoo
Me n Martha sure had fun,
Alcapolco Gold for everyone.

We're going south,
To get that Alcapolco Gold,
There aint nothin' it cant fix,
Old dogs can learn new tricks,
When the streets are lined with bricks of Alcapolco Gold.

Words and music by Jay Ungar & Cat Mother and the All Night Newsboys
From Albion Doo-Wah (Polydor 24-40-23)

In the first days of this country
When the buffalo roamed the land,
All the saddle tramps and cowboys
Used to roll their own by hand,
They'd swing up to the saddle
On their ass or on their horse,
And recite a little ditty
That went like this, of course:

When your feet are in the stirrups
And your ass is on the ground
'Cause the grass that he's been eating
Is the finest stuff around,
Well, let us not remember, boys,
And let us not forget:
Strike a match and light another
Marijuana cigarette!

Ah, you have heard of evil,
And you've heard of misery,
And you've heard of Richard Nixon,
But you haven't heard of me!
You may think they go together,
And you may think they do not,
But there ain't much you'll be thinkin'
When you've started smoking pot!

You can smoke it, you can eat it,
You can mix it with your beer,
You can hang it on your wall
And you can hang it in your ear;
And if you've got the notion,
And if he's got the class,
You can shove it in your feedbag
And feed it to your ass!

When your feet are in the stirrups
And your ass is on the ground
'Cause the grass that he's been eating
Is the finest stuff around,
Well, let us not remember, boys,
And let us not forget:
Strike a match and light another
Marijuana cigarette!

In my mind I am as young as I ever was, my heart is not yet ready to fail. I go forward, onward and upward. There are no obsticals before me. I can only see smooth sailing from here.

I have all my parts except my gallbladder which was taken down in the fight against drugs in 73. Never knew drugs would pick such an organ to distroy. I have managed to stay alive to spite it and have rarely missed it at all.

Yes Old Dear, the not doing of it comes close to kicken the crap from the doing. But I think it is just Winter Blue and when the Spring brings forth the first buds of life I will be full of inspiration and Mothers Energy to get the doing done. There is really little to do in the rain. Blessed Rain sweet necter from the Heavens. Mixing with the fallen leaves of Autum to produce nurishment for the Earth while she sleeps.

A Blue Norther is headed our way and will take out my lovely Cammillia blossoms, the only flower I have that blooms in the winter months. I tried to load them in my Gallery to share the love and beauty they generate, or should I say pix of them not them accutally. But alas HF says they are too big to load, hurrrumper grump! All tho I had cut them litterly in half they are still too big..WTF.. I have seen pix in here that took up a whole page and my little cammillias wont upload, nodda one. Bah!

Me thinks there are high jinx a foot. Pehaps a consultaion will the Oracal will straighten things up. I must remember to do that as I get ready for the party.. ohh yeah!

There's gonna be a party,
we're gonna have a good time,

We gonna boogie down,
we're gonna come unwound

We're gonna build a big fire,
we're gonna be inspired,

The joining of the tribes,
bring your best vibes,

Everyone will be there,
so put on your best wear,

Better bring your tomtom,
and dont forget your wigwam,

We're get real high,
camped beneith the big sky

We're gonna have a party,
We're gonna have a good time.

(:one toke over the line:)
Bright Blessings

With your pics,as the old saying goes it's not the size but the quality.A quality pic takes up a lot of storage.

One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

Awaitin' for the train that goes home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

Who do you love, I hope it's me
I've been changin', as you can plainly see
I felt the joy and I learned about the pain that my momma said
If I should choose to make a part of me, would surely strike me dead
Now I'm one toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
I'm waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

I been away a country mile,
Now I'm returnin' showin' off a smile
I met all the girls and loved myself a few
Ended by surprise like everything else I've been through
It opened up my eyes and now I'm
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
Don't you just know I'm waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

Don't you just know I'm waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

I want to be
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Don't you just know I'm waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over line
One toke, one toke over the line

Dear Haight '67 Hippies!

Remember that day in June '67 when the Art Museum caught on fire- all the paintings and sculptures on the lawn. The museum in the park, remember.
Chocolate George's funeral procession?
Sharing groovy potaoe salad with the cops? Before people started even hating any police? When everyone grooved.
The Be In?
I was young, (14 at the time) but I ws there- so were you, right?
They say if you really were there you wouldn't remember but I remember them even saying THAT.
Listen, Diggers, and Groovers and pranksters Hip is love and I love you.
I am write now deep-six exiled in the Bavarian Woodlands- not far from Munich. I need you! Please love and groove and please, please, please

I was in the Haight from 1970 to 1974. I remember the Good Earth Commune. It was on Cole St. I think they had a house right around the corner on Oak too. The White Panther Party had a house right across the street on Cole. Cass, Ron Lambert, Larry, Shirley, Janelle and her sweet little girl Hyacinth, there was Pisces Bob and Mary. Does any body remember Brian from England? How about the Masterson sisters? I remember the Peoples Ballroom that put on amazing concerts in GG Park and the Panhandle. I think Jefferson Airplane played in Marx Meadows in 1973, Hot Tuna in the Panhandle in 1974. Good times.

I remember the Straight Theatre. It was on the corner of Haight and Cole. By the time I got to the Haight, the Straight Theater was closed. Never got a chance to see it inside. Was at alot of great concerts put on by the Peoples Ballroom tho. Jerry Garcia played along with Hot Tuna in the Panhandle. Were you there? Jefferson Airplane played in Marx Meadows...an incredible crowd showed up for that one. I remember the fish and chips place too. Across the street was a shop that sold pirogies that were delicious! I remember the Omnibus Cafe and the Psalms Cafe on Haight St. I feel so glad that I was able to be in the Haight at that time. The world seemed smaller then. Easier somehow. I mean, if you needed a pair of pants or a shirt, you would find a "free box" and take what you needed. If you no longer had a need for something, just drop it off in the nearest free box. It all made sense. I think that there is hope that that way of life is not completely lost. I agree that people today are gathering energy again, and the way of life that was happening in the Haight will be back. Sure hope I'm right.

shameless heifer, yeah thats it. You sound like you were with the GE Commune. I was with the White Panthers. I know that a bunch of people from the GE left to go up to Oregon when we came. Do you remember sister Chuck and her son Kern by Larry? How about Cass? Ron Lambert? We also had a house in San Rafael, Berkley and in the warehouse district.
