View Full Version : Chatroom Renewed! Suggestions Wanted!
Hey peeps! I've renewed the chatroom for another year today.
Thanks to all who contributed to keep it going. :)
The Sigmachat people who developed the chatroom are coming out with a new version soon. They asked me for suggestions to improve it. So if anyone has any suggestions please post them here. I'll pass them along to the developers! :)

Make zillion times more fast.
Don't allow such people as LauraMay to enter
I'd like to see what the conversation was
...before I interrupt it
I hate just blindly entering

Make the screen bigger!
A selection of new *fart* sounds that represents the true diversity of farting would be nice, maybe one for pumps, one for trumps and the existing farty one.
Employ a robot lynzxx to provide lulzies in her abcense.
Make it so that everyone is called 'Ian'

I'd like to be able to have the scrolling of text be more fluid and less choppy. Java chat systems take a lot of memory and often crash, and people log out, log on often, so if you could condense somehow the logging of those updates, that would be cool.
What I mean is when someone logs in you see a large space for this in the text, ex:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b222/Aristartle/hipchat.jpg
The actual chat box should be modified to be wider, longer so that the viewer can see more chat. People tend to type one word sentences, and so a longer window frame for more chat would be nice.
It would be neat to allow script writing. That way when someone insults another member in conversation and needs a warning, the mods can simply hit a shift + character to run off a quick warning. It would be the same warning, consistently, so that everyone will be accustomed to the rules there. Or we can even hit a shift + character when someone wants to know the rules of the Chatroom, we can easily link to the Forum Guidelines with script writing, etc.
Also, I really want to use the tab complete option. Some people have really complicated usernames, and in order to have their name highlighted (or to have a sound go off, possibly with a new feature?!) so that we get the person's attention, you should be able to easily tab complete their name.
Tab Complete : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_line_completion
i'd like to know when you're instant messaging someone, when they message you back maybe with a sound or blinking lol

Only mods can see that. You can adjust your font etc. to display more. You can float the chatroom and resize it anyway you want! :)
I'll check into your other suggestions. :)

Give it some more pizazz. The PM boxes are bland. And more text colours.

pretty please??
I'd like the "away" thing to switch back automatically after a post...like the user marks themselves as away but when they come back it shows as "online" as soon as they make a new post
I always forget to switch it when I come back

:S please don't make it too complex...
us people with old computers won't be able to use it anymore! haha my computers from 1999, and the forums/chatroom run smoothly as they are. any serious upgrades though would probably put me (and anyone else using an older computer) out of business, and this would make me very sad :(
my computer is newer and fast...I want every feature enabled

It must not be....my jokes get deleted from this thread...so we have to assume if it was a joke....it would have been deleted also

Anyhoo...I wish I could "chat" while behind the firewall at work.

Thank you for thinking about chat, Skip.
Like BBAD suggested, maybe if the "away" could be taken away when you post? And even if the "away" could appear if you haven't posted in awhile.
Different rooms would be good.
I don't see the point of UK chat. Even Gay chat, for that matter. I appreciate Love chat being there, for the people interested in cybering. It makes it easy for us not to be affected or offended by their "A/S/L" tendencies.
Don't get me wrong, though. I love how there are multiple rooms. I just think they could have different names.

An easy way to make sure you get someones PM as soon as it appears is to close the PM box.. As harsh as that sounds. :p If the person is taking a long time to reply it's easy to forget about them..
But I definitely agree. A flashing would be good.
But bad for people who you want to ignore haha.

Hushbull, I hardly see you in chat anyway. :p

Aww thanks odon. I like to see your pretty lil username in there also.

More font options so that chat is easier to follow would be nice . I also agree with other's suggestions or creating something to make pm's easier to keep track of, like lighting up or flashing when a new message is posted.
More emoticons would be a nice feature as well, but I think font options and PM's are more important and make chat more user friendly.

i think Raz's flashing PM idea would be appreciated.

The only reason I'm not a regular in chat is that I don't have any computers that run MS Windows. I miss it, and maybe one of these days I'll put Windows on something.

Do other than pop-up to notify of a desired private chat- the new window hijacks the cursor focus so that if someone private chats you while you are typing in the main chat their pop-up steals the cursor focus mid sentence- meaning the portion of what you've typed after the pop-up is in that window instead of the original... very inconvenient for those of us who MUST keep our eyes on the keyboard when typing.

Well, first of all, thanks for renewing the chat Skip! :D
Sometimes someone will make obscene comments in the chat, then a mod isn't present to do anything about it. So perhaps a NOTIFY MODERATOR button to report it to the mod and save the last few messages for the record?
Other than that I don't have a lot of suggestions, although I wish the smilies in the chat were available everywhere else on the internet :D
Peace!

That makes sense, sometimes people forget to check the Instant Messaging window and get too absorbed in the main forum.
Some suggestion that people might enjoy is that a mod can change the Online Icon from blue to green - perhaps you could make it so that each person could choose from a greater variety of colors, this is something I've seen a few people suggest in the forums.

The chat was really improved when everyone was able to set their own font colors in the room. Before that it was really hard to tell who was saying what since all the lines looked the same no matter who was chatting. If we could get a choice of a couple more types of fonts it might help along the same lines.

Good suggestion, I was thinking the same thing yesterday but I haven't gotten around to suggesting it yet.
You could make a mobile version of the chat so that you could chat even when you can't get to your PC, or perhaps make a mobile version of hip that shows only the user CP so that you can change your profile / check status messages or PM other users.

The color does help, an I am totally with the alert for IM's, that'd be a big help, too.
