So, I cam off the mountain this morning where I been camping, to find 7 DEAD cats/kittens laying around the yard and by the creek. All but 2 had their intestines ripped out, carcass still laying there. All the dogs were on the hill with me....
We've also been having trouble with an enormous 'coon coming 'round at night raping the bird feeders... And all the birds in the bamboo patch has attracted owls....
anyhoo, WHAT rips out the intestines of small animals and leaves the body? And what the heck could do that to at least 7, maybe 8 (only one's missing) in one night?

And to make it even more puzzling, old man slept on the upstairs porch last night and did not hear a thing that was happening right below him. And the bodies of all the cats were found within 15 feet of where they were sleeping...

What a sad pisser.Do you have close neighbors? It seems like they would have scattered had it been another animal that had done this. But if a person had done it,they (the cats)would have been used to people and kind of stayed put, wouldn't they?It sounds like a person(cat hater )could have done this and just flung 'em around fairly close together.

That was my first thought when I read the original post, actually...some human cat hater. It's hard to believe that someone would do that...:( Of course, it still could have been another animal, but it seem kind of strange the way you found them.

Yeah, either a human doing something sick to shock you, or a domesticated animal. You have a dog, Earthmother? A domesticated animal would kill not for food, and placed the kills where you would find them as an offering to you as their alpha. The way cats bring you mice.
Edit: Whoops, you said all the dogs were accounted for. Are you sure they couldn't have gotten away?

Naw, the dogs never leave my side...
Humans would be a hard thing to think about. We have had some neighborhood drama as of late, but the cats were RIPPED open, not cut open with a knife.... One friend said mink might do that. I've seen weazel damage before but they usually go for the throat. So do opossums. But they usually do leave their kill. Owls usually carry away their food, and dogs would have mauled the cats and not ripped open the abdomen only... I dunno. Stumped. Coyote possible. There have been some seen around the county. Hawk? Maybe at daybreak.... Damn. Now I'm gonna worry about the dogs. They are mostly about the size of a full grown cat....
