This pile of deadwood is the culmination of three days of lifting and shifting and picking-up twigs. We're gonna burn this candidate for a bonfire if Kerry loses... or better yet... if he wins!

I hope you've enjoyed the walk around the place with me. It was a truly spectacular Sunday afternoon, probably the last warm weekend of the year. It is also Kenny's last day of vacation...

Be talkin' to ya soon,

So nice visiting with you Sam.
Maybe someday in person.

What a wonderful family you have there, I want chickens so bad...maybe when we get the place finished and have our fence across the front.
I read your post on the other thread about , selling and staying put, and peace and quiet and neighbors and.....

Its just the same here. When we first started coming down here from Springfield 4 years ago and Larry was showing me Southern Ohio, we would stop on this road because he has been friends (kinda) with the man we are buying our land from,
And there were only 3 houses on this whole road, about 10 miles long.
Now there are 11, 9 living on the road 2 owning property for weekend use or retirement but don't live here yet.
Doesn't sound like much, but relitivly speaking it is...too much.
But like you said...what the hell can you do???

If we came into big money we would move to Idaho smack dab in the middle of at least 100 acres, woods surrounding on all sides...
Pipe dream.

So we are staying...and living the best we can.
Gonna put up privacy fencing across 150' of road frontage, and get chickens....maybe some guinea's....i hope. I hope..
Just 'cause Guinea's are the only thing that look marvelous in Polka dots!!!!

I love when you share your pics with us,

teepi

Hi Teepi!

Ya know... you really don't need fencing or anything fancy to house chickens in. They sort of pick an out of the way spot and roost there. Mine haven't wandered away from the goat yard, horse pasture, woods in back of the barn since they've come here to live. Haven't even come across the road to visit us at the house.

Kenny thought that we would have to fence them in to keep them from shittin' all over everything... they did the first two days, but they've kept out and off of everything in the barn (knock on wood)... chickens are pretty good about that. We're getting two eggs a day, and two more pullets are looking for nesting places recently.

Funny you should mention privacy fence. Privacy fencing is so good. I love ours. The rock garden is right behind the fence... then along the road grows a sea of Forsythia that the dog can't even get through... here's a pic;

I'm taking the pic from in front of the mail box looking South

Kenny says if I don't get down there and eat some diner.... well, you know the story. Talk at'cha soon....

OH YEAH BABY!!!

GOOD FENCES MAKE GOOD NEIGHBORS....

Yeah, I know some people who have chickens and they just stay in the yard real nice.
But for my peace of mind (I can be such a worrier sometimes [the mother in me]I need peace of mind).
Ever had any Guinea's??

When I lived in NC my next door neighbor had 3 that would come over to my place every day and root around the yard. Then they had some chicks and would all come cackling over with the babes and the babes would go through my garden fence while the mothers had to wait on the outside and they would go nuts because they couldn't get to the babes and I would have to go in the garden and shoo them back throughthe fence...it was pretty funny.
I loved those birds.

Just stopped by to say, "Hi". Glad to see your sunny day and great pictures. We're having some rainy days, but they're needed. I like the idea having a big bonfire in celebration of Kerry's victory. Any other outcome would be unthinkable. I'll start piling mine up as soon as the rain stops. It'll be nice to have an elected president again.

Got to get back to work, see ya'll later,

Good morning,

I will have a big fire tonight....we have been thinning out a wooded area of stringy saplings, I use the trunk part for bean poles, tomatoe stakes, etc. But have a bit of brush that is dry now and ready to burn.

Just not into turning on the chipper right now...plus I always love the first cool night bon-fire.
I will drink wine and celebrate the good fortune that good friends bring.

I will name my first chiken..."Nester".

I am Such an idiot! Teepi, it must have been because of the ole man and his 28 projects goin' on at the same time... but, Thank You for the flower seeds! I meant to mention and thank you before... only I forgot.

Thank You! Like I said before, I'll be separating those perrenials next week. Do you have the time to put them in this fall? If not, I can always wait until the Spring.

I'll drink to your bonfire tonight too. After the Vet leaves, when she comes... I'm goin' out for a bottle of Blackberry Brandy. "Nester"... Fine name for a chicken.

Dad... Ya know, my very first dairy goat's name was Annie (1971). She was a Saanan doe kid (all white with upright ears). Then I found out that you can't keep Only One. My second doe's name was Heidi. She had a buck and a doe... then I was hooked. Next came the commercial goat dairy, then, when I left that situation, I sold over 200 does, 5 bucks, kept 2 good milkers for myself and moved in with Kenny. That was almost 29 years ago.

Oh! Almost forgot about the guinea hens. Yup, we had a few. They wouldn't roost in the coop though. Nested down in the wind row and the fox ate them. Good watchdogs... they sound like squeaky barndoor hinges.

I'm gonna try and write that story now... That's an open invitation for the Vet to arrive as soon as I'm almost finished.

Love Ya's,

Sam

Sam if you want to saddle up them perrenials I'll find time to ride them this fall.
Now that we are staying we changed the design of the front courtyard and it will be a lovely place to put them.
Hosta's will be great as it is pretty partly shady. Only gets good morning sun then yahoo shade all afternoon.

You are more than welcome for the seeds.
Those Salvias are a beautiful shade of a dark blue/purple.

I know that guinea's will roost in trees also, and want to give them a go, and yes they can raise some HELL!!

talk with ya's later.

Boy, can they ever raise some hell. There's no better watchdogs than guinea fowl. Now you've got me thinking of getting a couple of hens and a cock in the springtime, Teepi. I've been lusting after a pair of Black Swans for years too. Maybe I'll surprise Ken and have a couple of signets tucked away in his Easter Basket for him. With the guineas, I'll get me some guinea eggs and put them under one of the hens this coming spring. That way, when they hatch, they'll follow her around and learn how to be chickens... Ha!

I've got my spade sharpened... would you like small clumps or large?

Dad, I hope the rain stops soon for you. We had a frost last night. It looked real pretty out there this morning.

An honestly elected president would be a good thing for this country. For the life of me I just can't figure out how some folks can still bring themselves to vote for Bush. Have you seen any of the mud slinging the GOP is doing? Christ! They're putting crusher run into that mud they're throwing. Well, it's almost over with, and I hope to whatever that those who still possess a conscience will get out there and vote.

Have a good One,
Sam

Hiya Sam,

OOOHHHHH....Black Swans.....oh that sounds SO picturesque.(sp)

That would be cool to get them gron like chics. Maybe they'de behave a bit better!!

Any size clump you want to send is fine, like I said I have plans for all of it...and I have 8.5 acres I'm trying to plant...Larry says I'm nutty...lol
But he gets out there and helps me with all my nuttiness...so he MUST be kidding..

Had a moment of weakness yesterday and actually asked him about selling off 2-3 acres to put toward paying her off.....good thing we were on the phone....I know that look when I hear it...lol

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the rain to stop thoughts, but I've been doing my rain dance. It's been rainiy here the past couple of days, but I've only gotten .38". And that's all the rain there's been since september 17th when hurricane Ivan came by. You are getting frost, I'm still harvesting tomatoes, peppers, basil ... etc. Also been sequentially planting the fall/winter garden.

The Annie I was thinking about was your dog. I've never read anything that moved me nor made me cry as much.

Got to go, I'm working on a 2 wheel cart similar to the old Garden Way carts.

Peace, your friend,
poor_old_dad (or POD as I'm known here to my two sons, two sons that have NO interest in the farm)

Hi POD,

The last sentence in your post made me pause for thought...

My daughter Sarah is almost 28 now, she lives in Boston.

When she was growing up she was such a Barbie...totally into clothes, hair, make-up etc.
She was a good kid and would do the things around the house that I requested and would pitch in and help me in the garden, but I knew her heart was not in it. And she sure did make sure she always had on gloves..lol

In the last couple of years I have been hearing things come out of her mouth that I thought I would NEVER hear..."Mom, would it be OK to grow tomatoes in a bucket on my roof", "Mom, whats the best way to make crust for a pie", "Mom, I really would like to move to the country"......*gasp*..my daughter wants to move to the COUNTRY!!!!...
LALALLALALALA,.....
She was into city lights and partying there for quite awhile and I accept her for all her beauty and spirit, but.....She wants to move to the COUNTRY!!!! She's growing her own Tomatoes!!!!!.....
Wonders NEVER cease...
love,
teepi

I guess that if the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, than the tomato doesn't fall far from the vine.

Who'll Stop The Rain

Long as I remember, the rains been comin' down.
Clouds of myst'ry pourin' confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, tryin' to find the sun;
And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain.

I went down virginia, seekin' shelter from the storm.
Caught up in the fable, I watched the tower grow.
Five year plans and new deals, wrapped in golden chains.
And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain.

Heard the singer's playin', how we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together, tryin' to keep warm.
Still the rain kept pourin', fallin' on my ears.
And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain.

~ CCR

I couldn't resist. Ever since I came in here and read your reply, DAD, this song has been rattlin' around my brainbox.

Yes, I knew that Annie was the inspiration for naming your little lady. That choked me up Big Time, and I couldn't quite bring myself to reply to you then. You brought to mind a very clear picture of us finishing up Annie's grave. We were on our knees, filling the grave by hand, and when we patted the grave down, Ken was beside himself with grief. He crawled out of the rock garden on his hands and knees, collapsed on the soft grass and cried unconsolably. I will never forget how I felt at that moment.

Yeah Baby! Black Swans. In Hungary, old women over the age of 55 wore black. Or they did in my Grandmother's day. Everything they have is black from then on. I guess that custom survived in me through genetically influenced preference... the dog is black. My favorite goat, Ebony is black. Raven is black. My truck is black and I wear black 98% of the time. So looking out the kitchen window and seeing two graceful black swans cruising the pond just suits me fine.

I'm glad your moment of weakness passed there, Teepi. Don't do it. BTW... Ken's daughter was 38 this year. I'm sort of expecting a phone call telling us we'll be grandparents for the second time... who knows. But she has changed from the prima donna that I knew her as as a child. She takes after her Dad, and that makes her a wonderful person.

It's been raining here, on and off. But when I can walk out there, I'll have them plants in a box and off as quick as you can whistle dixie.

Hey Dad... I was just looking at one of those two wheeled wheel barrows at the feed store yesterday. I need something that I can haul horse manure down the hill to the pile in for the winter snows. We have had a gardenway cart for eons, but that won't do the job and the cart won't fit in my barn's aisleway. In any case, Please let me know where you bought the tires for your cart... the tires on our cart have been flat for more than 10 years and it's sitting under the porch, but if I had tires on it I could finish a few projects waiting in the wings.

Tanks Youse Guys... Love Ya,
Sam
