I am getting my permit in the next couple of days to summit Mt Whitney (ele.14,505) for September 1, 2009. It is the tallest mountain in lower 48 states Plan on doing it in one full day..22 miles roundtrip, 6000 ft elevation gain. I would like to have a group of 4. I have 1 so far. I am asking all the people I know to see if they want to do it with me. Anybody here wanna do it?

Power to you! I used to live at the foot of Mt.Whitney and hiked around there a bit....it is so beautiful there - enjoy!

You've brought back some pleasant visual memories for me :)

here is the trail report from May 10th..I am sure glad I am doing it later in the season..I have decided I am going to go solo..also, I am going to do it in 2 days for acclimitized better. I am going to reserve on Monday..looks like the only days they have left are around september 7th, 8th or 9th..snow usually comes back around the 20th or sep..

May 10 trail report:
The trail is mostly clear of snow to Lone Pine Lake. Between Lone Pine Lake and Mirror Lake, intermittent small drifts of snow cover the trail. From Mirror Lake to Trailside Meadow, larger and more frequent drifts of snow will be encountered making route finding skills necessary. From Trail side Meadow to Trail Camp, large snowfields cover much of the trail with some icy, steep and exposed sections depending on where you go. Be prepared to camp on snow if you are doing a multi-day trip. Those going above Trail Camp can expect winter mountaineering conditions where proper equipment, skills, knowledge and experience are needed to travel safely. There have been two fatalities in the Whitney Zone this spring. Both incidents involved steep snow and ice conditions. Note that avalanches, rockslides and changing surface conditions are naturally occurring events in the Sierra this time of year. Snow/ ice hardness and consistency can change rapidly depending upon variables such as aspect, weather and time of day.
Know your limits. Safety is YOUR Responsibility.

I live at 7000ft. ... I'm content with that.. if I want to be any higher I can drive up the road and be at 10...takes about 20 mins ;)

highest spot in the 48..not USA... there are 16 peaks higher

you not even talking 100ft higher compared to some peaks in Co.;)

but cool just the same

Last post in this forum for awhile..time to get in gear..I got quite a bit of work to do to get ready for this hike.. 22 miles and 6000 ft elevation gain is quite a bit in one day, mostly concerning V02 max and high altitude sickness..I got 10 large hikes planned between now and september..all between 10-20 miles and all mostly over 10,000 ft..plus, my everyday with work, family and training..I have been wasting a lot of time here lately and it is really time that I don't have, so it is time to take a break..See everyone some time after September, I will be back with a new username then..Peace out:cool:
