My ranger is making a rattling noise only when I push the clutch in..do you think it is the transmission?
nope..probably not....its most likely the release bearing..the transmision stops turning when you push the clutch pedal down...well not completely ..but it slows down and eventually stops...and transmissions dont usually make noise when theres no load on them...so my guess is release bearing

is that hard to replace? cause it seems to still be running ok..but when I am sitting at a light with the clutch pushed in I can hear all of this rattling and if I put it in Neutral and release the clutch everything is cool..
you should never be holding the clutch down while sitting at a light:toetap05:
why?..you ask
because then your wearing out your release bearing for nothing:hat:..you should always be in neutral when you stop
and yes...its a pretty big job probably ..it depends on the year and type of trans but most fords use a stupid and expensive internal slave cylinder/bearing assembly that sometimes even requires that you change the clutch-master cylinder too..and it means taking off the transmission ...and if youre gonna do that you might as well put in a new clutch at the same time
what year is the truck? and Ill get a labour time estimate

dang, it is a 2002...I might just end up getting another truck (a bigger one)
Its not so bad....2 wheel drive is roughly 4 hours and 4wd is roughly 6 hours...assuming you have a 4 cyl
I dont know if the pic will work but this is the slave/release bearing assembly

Why is this thread sticky? I didn't know BBAD knew anything... (no offense) This is an awesome example of HF users sticking together.
P.S. I would not drive it until it breaks, that can cause damage to other parts. Right BBAD?
Its a stickie because the forum leader wants it to be a stickie..
..and I would drive it until it breaks too...its only going to wreck the pressure plate which you might as well change anyways when the transmisions out....
even if it totally gives out you can still bypass the pedal safety switch...start it in gear and shift the other gears without clutching to get home

invaluble info..thats why it is a sticky..I just drove it across town and it didnt stick at all..I did try and limit the number of times I pushed the clutch..thanks..
When you notice you cant get it in reverse ....that means the end is near
