Does anyone here properly know how to knife fight? I've heard the trick it just to keep slashing, not allowing the other guy to react, but what if he gets a pause, and attacks back? what stance do you assume? do you crouch? Make your self bigger in appearance? how do you hold the knife? how do you defend yourself?

i'm trained on knife fighting and can help you out.. although theres only so much you can read on the subject without having personal instruction. The trick isn't to hold the knife like your stabbing someone. Hold it up right and slash. Keep your left foot forward (if your a righty) in a well balanced stance. Keep your right hand with the knife back near your right hip. Use your left hand to deflect his attacks and wait for your chance to strike. Deflect, slash, then get back to your stance. The best offense in a knife fight is a good defense.

i dont know much on this subject but i have been in a knife fight (it was for fun not a real knife fight with knives) with one of my friends who is trained and he says to hold a knife with the blade coming out of the part of your hand where your thumb is in your dominant hand( slashing position is what i mean ) and if you hold a second knife in your other hand you keep it in the downward stabbing position so that when you hold your fists out in front of you both knives should face inward.

there are TONS of videos on the web on the subject. as much as i believe the only real way to learn self defense and hand to hand combat is to be trained by a expert,i believe videos will give you a bit more of a grasp of what to do than reading about it will.

My favorite method is to kick them in the wrist, elbow, head, solar plexus, or nuts and add their knife to my collection. I say this with forty years of experience and martial practice behind me.
Without that I recomend you RUN! That is really the best defence if it's an option open to you.

umm get a bunch of friends with wooden knifes and practice. Once you start beating them constantly go find tough opponents and practice on them. Once you have beat everyone, grab a real knife cut some dude up and goto jail......okay scrap that last part

buddy of mine who's got a black belt in tong so do once told me that you're supposed to hold a knife like you're stabbing someone, holding the blade away from your "opponent." otherwise, he can kick it out of your hand.

Knife fighting? WTF!?!? Look kid...From an old former biker and bodyguard your best defense is to STAY AWAY from fights! I can't tell you how many fools I've seen sent to the ER having been stabbed with their own knives. Besides, if you learn some real self defense you'll find that even a rolled up newspaper can be as effective as a knife.

Oh...and seriously...asking about weapons and fighting is kind of in opposition to what Hip Forums stands for. Don't you think???

someone once told me: people who pull knives get stabbed. people who pull guns get shot. but i mean...if you're just learning it for fun/martial arts or whatnot i don't see any harm in it. self defense is a good tool to have if you've got the right discipline.

Yes, if it's sporting and splendid.

I.e. No hard stabs, just prods. All slashes should be kept to a light graze. Kind of like two little effeminate boys.

Kind of like two little effeminate boys.

You have the WRONG dude, dude!!!

I don't fight...don't need to. I was hoping you'd take the bait.
It's like this. It is very easy to disarm and disable a knife wielding attacker with a simple walking stick. My reach with a stick is far greater than a knife. One shot to the solar plexus and a sweep behind the ankles. Subject disabled without a fight and the aching solar plexus will make one forget they even have a knife.

CANE-FU!!!!!

Damn. I was hoping after the play knife fight we could kiss.

I don't need to fight either. If somebody comes up and pushes me, though, I'm pushing back.

This is how it is for me: Somebody comes up at me and makes a stabbing motion with a knife. I take a brick and smash it over their face.

zencoyote

Sorry, there are only two men whom I'll kiss. One is my Italian brother and the other has been my friend for 40 years. No tongue though. LOL!!!

Nah, most of this has been just good fun. I deplore violence and though I will defend myself and innocents it really makes me feel awful to do it.
I've seen too much blood and guts. I gave that up long ago and still carry some guilt and remorse for some that I hurt. Not all, however.

How about we all put down our weapons and pass the bong around??

There are exactly zero men I'd like to kiss. I used to say I'd sleep with Billy Idol just for the story, but age has taught me that that would probably be a traumatic mistake. I'm sure we'd both be crying by the end.

Yeah, I can imagine that it might be the case that some individuals may just conflict with your right to exist, period. I've never even been in a real fight, though. Just some half-assed headlocking in high school that didn't get anywhere.

Dang people, what's with all the violence? And why you helping a violent person become more violent? That like giving a terrorist and new gun... if ya have to ask how to knife fight, then you shouldn't be fighting... save the anger and release it on a good video game, or get a punching bag.

Yeah man, I haven't seen that stuff in years... been searching while I was smoking, found good stuff here and there, but nothing like the classics...
I bid you hail friend, you know it brother!!!

I did find blonde hash and some other hash from India a while back, made from the pollen of the mature plant... heard they walked through the fields with arms outstretched and the gooey, resinous pollen stuck to their arms, then they balled it up and packed it... pure unrefined goodness...
it kicked my ass and I had huge tolerence.

With that thought, I bid you peace.

I have a black belt in Sum Dom Fuk and if you are ever faced with a knife weilding jackass who wants to engage in a knife fight, chances are great you will be slashed and stabbed...the best defense is to go out and buy some really comfortable shoes and join a track team to learn how to run fast and long!

Cause you can see his knife! Now you know for sure that it's not in your best interests to mess with him so get the fuck outta there. No need to play hero. avoid knife fights...if you roll with someone that knows what theyre doing, youre going to get cut even if you "win". learn it, practice it, take classes (i recommend modern arnis), and most of all, if you ever run into a situation where you may need to use it, try running first.

One that's wooden or plastic and not sharp. No such thing as a knife especially made for noobies - all real knives are sharp and anyone can use them to make you bleed if they really want to regardless of their level of expertise.

^I know. Of all the things you can be studying in Free School, why this?

Knife fighting only exists in movies and tv shows. Or in the dojo. Nobody picks up a knife in order to "knife fight" - he's either threatening you with it so you'll give him what he wants (like your wallet) or he wants to kill you.

If he wants something from you, you have to ask yourself: "Is whatever he wants from me worth risking my life for or can I let him have it (while being on guard at the same time cause he might decide to kill me anyway)?"

If he wants to kill you, do you really think it's gonna be a "knife fight" a la Seagal vs. Tommy Lee Jones in Under Seige? Even if you do have your own knife, he's not gonna give you a chance to draw it. Chances are you won't even see his knife.

With all due respect to Tang Soo Do and your black belt buddy:

He can kick it out of my hand only if my hand is not moving (read that: I'm not actively trying to slash or stab him with it). Hands are rather small and fast-moving targets. Very hard to hit. Besides, this tactic is based on the assumption that I will be showing him my knife before attacking.

buddy of mine who's got a black belt in tong so do once told me that you're supposed to hold a knife like you're stabbing someone, holding the blade away from your "opponent." otherwise, he can kick it out of your hand.

For training purposes, I'd check out some Krav Maga classes. You can youtube krav maga knife fighting for a few demonstrations, which will be more helpful than reading about it.

And from a practical standpoint, musikero is right. If someone has a knife and wants your wallet, don't fight them. It doesn't take much skill to be deadly with one.

By the way, be very wary of knife fighting videos. Some of them are full of crap that won't help in a violent situation and will most likely get you killed. My instructor and I just watched this video last saturday where the idiot posing as instructor performed the dumbest, most lame-ass knife disarm we've ever seen - the kind that will work only if the guy with the knife is holding it very loosely.
