I think this surprises me less than the idea that anyone can ascend to and be effective in the presidency without corrupting baggage. The only people who MIGHT have the slightest chance of working up through the ranks without the corrupting influence of money are those wealthy enough to fund their own campaigns- and that level of wealth can work against someone, especially in this day and age where the very rich are seen as out of touch with the "common man" and something to be exploited by an opponent despite the likelihood that he or she is just as out of touch.
