i used to type like i talk here all the time but it drove folks nuts so i kinda quit..

The WHOLE saying is meant to mean "to visit", i think:
You'd go set a spell,
have a nice tall glass of iced tea, lemonade, mint juleps, sassparilla, moonshine, whatever,
talk about the weather,
