In terms of acting ability, probably Brad Pitt, closely followed by Jonny Depp. Orlando Bloom may be good, but he really needs a lead role in which to shine, so far he's played very simillar supporting roles in every film he's been in....

But I mean, c'mon! Brad's OK, but Jonny Depp can like really act, man! Watch Gilbert Grape or Blow, and tell me with a straight face (and that's straight in both senses of the word!) that Brad's the better actor. When you're watching Jonny Depp, you forget you're watching Jonny Depp and just get drawn into the character. That's what real acting's all about.

what have you seen him in dok? because ive not seen him in anything he's been really bad in...except maybe seven years in tibet and that was the accent more than anything.

and he's damn good in fight club

i would give him sympathy for not being taken seriously becauses a teenage pinup...the poor bastard with choice of any woman on the planet

DoktorAtomik
05-18-2004, 08:55 PM
what have you seen him in dok?
To be entirely honest, well.... pretty much everything! I mean I really like the guy, but his acting's just not on the same level as Jonny Depp. I swear that guy is a different person every time I see him on screen.

and he's damn good in fight club
Oooooh. I have to disagree. I'm almost certainly in a minority here, but I think Fight Club's a massively over-rated film!

If you wanna do the hard sell for Brad, probably Interview With the Vampire and Snatch are his finest acting moments. Again, pretty damn good, but just not quite up to Jonny's standards or level of consistency.

kier
05-18-2004, 09:07 PM
but look at there starts in careers.....brad in an advert, then a sex scene in thelma and louise made him big...many films after that tried to recreate it.

for looks, i'd say johnny depp, if i was a woman i'd pounce him :p

Granted Jonny Depp does have that ability, Jack Sparrow did really draw you into the character, but he was shite in Sleepy Hollow. Brad Pitt in Interview with a Vampire is superb, also in Kalifornia, you really do get drawn into those characters....PS. It's nice to know that you 'really like Brad Pitt', seems the other team has some vacancies for batsmen....

DoktorAtomik

Ummm..... nope! I think he played the character exactly as it was written. If there's anything not to like, it's the character, not the acting.

Brad Pitt in Interview with a Vampire is superbThat's what I said :p Yeah, he sure managed to play Louis as the whining brat that I always envisaged!

PS. It's nice to know that you 'really like Brad Pitt', seems the other team has some vacancies for batsmen....Nice try. Subtle. I'm taken though, I'm afraid. Thanks for showing an interest though ;)

if you go and see the film thats just come out "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" you'd think orlando bloom was a twat...even tho it's just a character he was playing...i chose to believe it was really him...and that he is in fact a twat...

unfortunately i haven't been able to come up with cases against mr's depp and pitt...but they have both been in good films...fear and loathing in las vegas, ed wood, edward scissorhands, fight club and se7en...so i will let them off...

they both need bashing in the faces with an iron tho...and then maybe people will see films because they want to see the film rather than they want to wank in the cinema...

JOHNNY! Johnny Depp all the way, man. There is no more versatile actor, as far as I'm concerned. The man is just... To be frank, he's the best fucking actor in the world (some may say that's a stretch, but hey, it's how I feel). I like when an actor doesn't play the same role in every film, and I LOVE it when said actor can make it believable! *sigh* Yes. Johnny.

Brad Pitt is good, too. His range is rather small, but he's a decent actor. :)

Orlando Bloom is a joke, and really shouldn't be in the same category as Johnny and Brad. He's cute, yes, but that's about it. Of course, maybe it's just because, like Sal said, he hasn't had a role in which he could shine bright. BUT, from what I've seen, I think he needs to brush up on his acting skills. And he REALLY needs to prove himself, because he's already been labeled as a "teen heartthrob", which is the kiss of death if you want a long-lasting, SERIOUS acting career. Unless he really gets a role to PROVE himself, or uglies himself up for a role (like Johnny did for "Edward Scissorhands"), I don't see him lasting another five years...if that.

JOHNNY DEPP!! not only is he the best actor, the best movie being Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which he has starred in, he is damn sexy also and i am looking foward to The Rum Diary, also written by Hunter S Thompson, who wrote fear and loathing.

oh my, it's got to be johnny depp. he is the best on the shallow level, looks only based level(my god, the man is forty and still pretty much the sexiest man alive).

but he is also one hell of an actor - he made edward scissorhands SUCH an endearing character, when by rights he should have been fairly hideous. he has a fanatstic body of work, and I love his quirky, offbeat chracters.
i just adore him :)

Nah. Never seen that particular incarnation of Shakesperean butchery. I'm a bit of a snob on that front I'm afraid. I like to see the classics in their original historical settings.

DoktorAtomik
05-19-2004, 11:00 AM
Well it's not really snobbery though. One of the things that draws me to Shakespeare is the history, and so if you move his plays to the modern day, then you remove a major part of what interests me.

05-19-2004, 12:03 PM
Just going to add to the obvious, has to be Johnny Depp. Why ? Well because he can act! Don't get to see many films but I've enjoyed all the Depp films I've seen:Gilbert Grape,Sleepy Hollow,Edward Scissorhands, and a funny film with Marlon Brando called something like Don Juan de Marcos which noone else seems to have seen(maybe I have made that up)

Brad Pitt may be able to act,but I didn't like Fight Club and he certainly doesn't have Depps magnetism or chameleon acting ability.

Orlando Bloom is a pretty boy,but thats it as far as I can see

Oh and I agree with Maon, could never see what was attractive about Leonardo di Capprio , he always looks spoiled and sulky whenever I see him on screen.

Orlando Blooms bloody boring
So therefore Johnny Depp has to win because he has *some* talent (but he's still annoying) :p

What with Harrison Ford as Indy? He does the whole Han Solo/Indiana Jones sort of anti-hero thing well, and I'm all in favour of anti age discrimination, but surely he has enough money, or maybe he's trying to prove something to Callista Flockheart?

DoktorAtomik

What with Harrison Ford as Indy? Yup. You think that's bad, there's still rumours that Lucas might actually finish off his original Star Wars plan and make three sequels to the original trilogy. Makes ya wonder if he'd try and get the original cast back. Carrie Fisher's up for it apparently, and as for Mark Hamill.... well, it's gotta beat a welfare cheque, huh? ;) Harrison Ford would probably do it if you offered him enough money. But still..... Episode 7: The Zimmer Frame Strikes Back?

moominmamma
05-19-2004, 01:15 PM
I've always thought that Sean Connery was one of those actors who played Sean Connery very well,if you see what I mean. He's not like your Johnny Depps or Daniel Day Lewis, people who change completely into the character they are playing.

If you cast Sean Connery you know what you are going to get and he does it well, and in that sense yup he fits well with Harrison Ford. But I don't think Sean is getting better with age, its just he's been being Mr Connery for a long time now, he ought to be good at it!

I knew there was a reason for limiting the life span of us human beings. It's to stop never ending sequels of films that we used to love:)

Ah tis a shame I used to have a real soft spot for Mr Ford after that scene in "Witness" where he dances with Kelly McGillis to Sam Cook singing" Wonderful World" on the radio.

Johnny Depp is good-looking, definitely, but he's not a stereotypical "pretty boy". Orlando, yes. Brad, maybe. Johnny, no. He doesn't "risk" his image...he doesn't give a shit about it! He doesn't care what you or I or any other person in this thread or in the world thinks of him, which is in part why he does the roles that he does. He wants to ACT, and he's not afraid to ugly himself up to do it. And he's great at what he does. He doesn't care enough about his image to "risk" it. You can't risk something you don't care about in the first place.

Thats what i ment with depp he's not afraid to do whatever intrest's him. he's not scared to take a risk. he's not worried about maybe doing something that could possible decimate his public image.
could you image brad pitt for example in Dead man?? but he played it well and i love that film.
the only thing i like brad pitt in was 12 monkeys, that impressed and suprised me just for the fact that he did it,. and was actually pretty good.
depp's filmography is a lot more varied and entertaining.
but i still consider him to be some one who you would expect to be fancied on pure looks before you even saw him in a film. if ya understand what i mean?

Eric Banana-bread! I think he is SO underrated. He's not on the same level as Depp, but hell if he doesn't have the potential!

And to think he used to be a comeidan in Austrailia! I have some Aussie friends who remember Banana from his pre-Hulk days, and they always talk about how weird it is to see him in serious roles now. lol Though they DID get to see him in Chopper. Which got me to thinking...

Charlize Theron gained weight to play a true-life murderer in Monster and won an academy award! While Eric did the exact same thing in Chopper (years before Ms. Theron) and got minimal recognition at best. :( And I don't think he's less of an actor than she is.

That is NOT a serious argument (before some people start going off on how wrong I am). LOL That was just something that crossed my mind the other day.
