Demo for Canary Wharf Cleaners - October 15th
Not just the cleaners, they be just the starting point.
[quote=TGWU]The cleaners are the first group we are organising at canary Wharf. Mostly migrant workers from various countries in Africa and South America they need every penny they can earn to live in London.
Working for the richest companies in the world, they are on little more than minimum wages and minimum holidays. No sick pay, no pension and no job security.
It won’t be easy organising at the Wharf but then it wasn’t in 1889.

Our Demands
We have six demands for workers on the wharf.
• A minimum wage of £6.70p an hour.
• 28 days paid holidays a year
• Sick Pay
• A Pension Scheme
• Union Recognition
• Respect

We have had Victories
Three of the four major Cleaning Contractors; ISS, Mitie and OCS have agreed to recognize the Union. Only the fourth, Lancaster is now holding out.
HSBC with their contractor OCS have met the Union demands in full whilst Clifford Chance with their contractor Mitie have conceded on the pay and holidays but not yet on the Sick Pay or Pension.
Barclays have agreed to open their new site on higher rates than the average on the Wharf.

The Battle Ahead
e are unlikely to win all our demands on every site without strike action.

Before we embark on this action however we want to give every employer on the Wharf the opportunity to take their social responsibility to act like a 21st century employer and not a 19th century one.

As part of the campaign we are Walking the Wharf on October the 15th to help build the confidence of the workers and show the employers the strength of Organised Labour.

Respect is simply our demand that employers and building owners give our members the respect they deserve as hard working contributors to our society.
This includes job security. No more hire and fire.)

It is hard to believe that in the 21st century we need to argue about such limited demands. Well we do and we will.

A decision to treat some cleaners at one site like casual workers and simply move them off site at the behest of the Building Management was overturned when the remaining workers threatened to go on strike.
A supervisor whose pay was to be cut had it re-instated after Union intervention.
Many members have been saved from the sack or re-instated on appeal when accused of disciplinary offences which either did not stand up or did not warrant dismissal.
