I was always quite into religion when I was younger, but more of the experiential parts of it. I was raised as a christian but I never got much into it because Christianity these days seems to be nothing but empty worshiping, groveling, and obedience to some lame autocratic dictator like Yahweh or his so called son Jesus. I became more universalist during the beginning stages of high school and finally an atheist by my senior year in high school. I think pot really helped in this area, but I was always interested in eastern spirituality (hinduism, buddhism, daoism, ect.) and shamanism none the less.
And really the conclusion that I eventually came to was that yeah spirituality is mainly about experience. If there is no overwhelming experiences associated with spirituality what is the point? Otherwise it is limiting. The goal of (non-western/abrahamic) spirituality in my opinion was summed up perfectly by Timothy Leary......to get high. To have religious and spiritual extacy.
Meditation is a form of getting high in many ways, and I find for example the state of consciousness found in pot seems very similar to the state of consciousness found in breathing-zazen (sound starting to resemble just music or noises of music).
And of course there is shrooms....and on a committed dose (5g+) in silent darkness (or better in a isolation tank) will propel you into visionary states described by the mystics of the hindu sadhus, daoist mystics, and zen buddhist monks.....as well as the original american shamans. Meditating on shrooms is very effective.
DMT, a close relative to mushrooms (the shroom chemical being O-phosphoryl-4-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine) may play a more fundamental role in spiritual visions and dreams of course. Whether in ayahuasca, high dose mushrooms, yopo snuffs, or in the most instense form.....pure smoked dmt.........this chemical should be the doorway to the soul. You have your ego.....supported quite a bit on serotonin. This is your normal state of consicousness....characterized by a little of beta and little alpha. Then you have the soul.....the dreamier states of consciousness like those found with pot and zazen meditation (mainly alpha and theta). Or there is the shattering state of mystical enlightenment with the universe produced by high dose shroom, ayahuasca, acid, and a smoked dose of DMT (mainly theta and delta).
Oh yeah and you can't forget lsd.....although acid seems to be less similar to the other trypamines like dimethyltryptamine, it being close to 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin). Shamanic drumming on a high dose of shrooms or acid will bring you closer to ego death.
DMT is produced in the human body and may play a role in dreaming and near death experiences as well.
