The first two were the greatest RPGs ever put out there, in my opinion. Brotherhood of Steel was okay, but I'd been looking forward to FO3 for years. There's just no way I'll ever have an xbox to play it on. Be sure to tell me how it is so I can enjoy it vicariously through you.

I've been waiting a long time too until i saw how the current game was turning out. I'm sure it'll be great but the first/third person perspective has just ruined it for me personally ... i'm just an isometric, top down man. Black Isles 'van buren' was looking good in that isometric mould ... shame they scrapped it, i would have prefered that.
So to console myself i'm playing fallout 2 again with the 'Fallout 2 renovation project' installed... it's pretty good so far. ;)

God I wish I had a computer that could run this game, I loved Fallout 1 and 2. Looks like I might have to wait a few years before I can play this one now....

I've been playing it for two days now (not straight!) and it's by far the most immersive game I've ever played.
This game belongs in an art museum.
No joke.

It's an amazing game, we had till wait till the 31st but the first thing I did this morning was get dressed, walk up the road, and buy it. As for immersion I can't really think of another game that comes close it, there's nothing like scavenging for crap in a dimly lit house in the middle of nowhere.
I've got a few game mechanics / progression nit-picks, primarily "why the hell wouldn't you use V.A.T.S. 99% of the time" and a bit of moaning about the way your skills progress compared to the previous games but you could call that fanboy whining. I've been hit by 2 bugs to boot, but that's what you get for buying the game on release day.
All in all a stunningly beautiful and very engaging game that im still going to be playing in 5 years

sounds good.... but my worry is that when i get it, i will find it too big, if you know what i mean, like oblivion, i bought that and just couldnt get into it, didnt have the time to invest to actually get anywhere... hopefuly my fallout 3 experience wont follow the same route

I got Fallout 3, and it has got to be one of the best, or maybe THE best, games I have ever played. It's addicting, and immersive. I was so excited for this game, and all my expectations have been met or surpassed. The only problems I could find is a few minor bugs, and the facial animations aren't really great.

I watched some gameplay clips today. It looks alot different than I expected, more along the lines of a FPS. Still looks good, but there's alot of good looking shooters out there, so exactly how many of the original rpg elements are retained?
And what about system requirements? Can I play on my shitty laptop, or will I need to rob a computer store?

When you've spent 3 hours running round rivet-fucking-city you'll wish it was a FPS. The combat is a bit unusual it that you can dodge things FPS style and run round like a headless chicken, but when it comes to shooting back your accuracy and damage are very much stats based, and if your anything like me you'll do 90% of your fighting with the VATS targeting. This is very much an RPG, and a dam good one to boot.

Its out on pc already..:) .. i don't think its a leaked version i downloaded... and its running fine on my computer... and as far as i can see you don't need a high-end computer to play it..

It dropped for P.C one day before it dropped for X-Box
The system requirements for the P.C version are staggering for your average computer, someone with a decent graphics card will be able to play it without any problem.
Someone with a high end gaming graphics card will just be amazed, A high end P.C will always run games around 30% + faster than any console.
Fallout 3 + high def monitor and a monster video card = Video nirvana.
If your P.C is getting older I wouldn't bother getting fallout3 for it just stick to the console versions there almost identical.
But if your lucky enough to have a high end gaming rig defiantly choose the P.C version.
Plus no matter what you choose you can still use your xbox controller for either version.

Since graphics aren't my primary concern, and a new console is not an option, I might just try downloading it. All I really want is to cap a few raiders with my old friend Desert Eagle .44.

11-16-2008, 04:23 AM
Mmm? No Desert Eagle!
I bought the PC version several days ago and first chance i got i played a 24 hour stint ... it IS a fantastic game, i'm playing on nearly minimum settings though at 1024x768.
My PC is a 2.13 Core2 Duo, 1GB ram and Nvidia 7300 LE (256 mb) and the stated reqirements for the game are 2.4 GHz processor, 1GB ram and Nvidia 6800 or ATI x850 ... so i only just meet the requirements. - However it runs fine and looks pretty good even on minimum game graphics settings, but i raised the 'building' draw distance a bit and the 'actor' draw distance to full, but everything on minimum apart from that. No shadows, water reflections ect.
Missions are good ... some quite lengthy ones, a vast array of armour and weapons ... standard ones like hunting rifles, magnums and sub machine guns but there are also uniques too ... my faves being a scoped magnum, Lincoln Rifle and 'Terrible shotgun' and these can be repaired using standard magnum, hunting rifle, and combat shotgun respectively. The assault rifles are good too. You can also build several weapons from schematics when you have found all the bits of junk needed. - Fallout is all about weapons yes?!
I was a bit sceptical but it's vastly exeeded my expectations!

Ahhhh such a good game, and the world is outrageously huge. My only "hmph" is that you can't continue playing after you beat the main quest, which is pretty short really. Doesn't mean you can't put it off, though.

Yeah I know what you mean there was a touch of unpolished about the graphics on the PS3. Some developers seem to treat the system as an after though, presumably because they can't be bothered to code for the slightly weird architecture (orange box for example) but I say fuck them, we will see which system is still looking sharp in 3 years time and I don't think its going to be anything running PPC cores.

I need to choose between this and Dead Space. Bethesda makes ludicrously awesome RPG's, but I don't own any horror games other than Bioshock and I've really been wanting to change that.
I was also worried after I heard Fallout's main quest was pretty short, then I remembered that my Oblivion game has over 250 hours logged and I'm only a fraction of the way done with the main quest.

If you do not dive right into the main uest and just do what you want it will take alot longer. I have played it for about two weeks doing all the side quests and have barely scratched the main quest. Also once you finish it you can replay it with a different mindset - as say kill everyone that is not a help to me- and it will open up diferent quest due to your new "karma".
I was a fan of the first two and I am happy with this and glad to see all of the same termenology and gadgets as in the old games. Now off to collect more caps!

Rudenoodle ... i'm no great modder by any means but i've been tinkering with the GECK the last week ... just very minor changes to weapon damage, range, ect, ... just making a few of the weapons and armour more how i'd like them basically - like giving the blackhawk the range of a sniper rifle, increasing clip size and stuff ... and so i've been opening some of the esp. files i've downloaded and looking at them and making some simple changes. I was fed up with some of the traders and NPCs (like bryan wilkes for instance) getting killed by critters and mutants (because i installed an increased spawns mod) so i've been making a few characters unkillable just using the in-game console commands. Also been installing some great texture mods but i'm finding the more mods i install the more my game is likely to crash.
Anyway i gather you're interested in creating new cells/locations eh? ...which i know nothing about but it seems that since fallout 3 uses the same engine as oblivion, that many people who were creating mods for oblivion are now creating mods for fallout 3 and i understand that the GECK is very similar to the modding tools that were released for oblivion ... so there's already a wealth of information and tutorials on modding oblivion that can simply be transposed to modding fallout. There are many modding forums for both games that you should seek out and of course i guess one place to start would be the GECK homepage:
http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Main_Page
- And this place seems pretty good ... there's some tutorials in the forums there too:
http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/categories.php
There seem to be a few problems with the GECK also ... namely that the navmesh (grid which tells NPCs where they can walk and where they can't) function is not working correctly.
I'd like to learn to use the GECK myself so i'm kinda looking into things too.

I got a copy for christmas, and it's okay. Theirs just TOO much to do. Pick up this, pick up that. It's hard to keep straight on one thing when you have a million other things to do. I do enjoy bashing some raiders heads in, or pickpocketing people.

I play it on the PS3 as well and I just love it. Made by the same people who created the Morrowind Series and it shows. I would suggest this game to anyone who like FPS and RPGs.
