Thats not disrespectful, thats cool. Rasta is not the only one allowed to have dreads!
Beck-go for dreads, if thats what you want. Dont worry about how they will look. Thats the point of dreads.

is it disrespectful if i am not rasta, but i wear the red-yellow-green stripe flag?
i don't neccessarily see that flag as a "rastafarian" flag, but more a symbol of peace for all people.
i hope i haven't offended anybody by my flag or my dread sleeves or tam or anything.

i am not black nor Rastafari, and i have dreadlocks. this is mostly because of the love i have for the carribbean and jamaica ( i have spent much time there ) and the people there. my hair also started dreading itself, so i decided it was ok to go with it.
All I can say is What up dread head?
He who feels it nows it
wich is to say by creating a dread you understand the value of life, via care fee expression or celebration

a few im sure would be offended, but that dosent matter. dreaded hair is a natural proccess and as such cant be confined to any one race or religion. just let it grow, and grow with it.

people long before Rasta came about had dreads. In the middle ages people only washed their hair in the summertime, they wold get sick if they did in winter and they called them fairy locks, they thought fairies came at night and put them in and it was supposed to be bad luck if you brushed them out!

Am I being disrespectful to rastafarians by not asking if I am in any way being disrespectful to rastafarians?
borat
10-04-2006, 04:02 PM
i don't think dreads should be disrespectful to ayone. wearing "rasta" effects without being a rastafari, though, like the tricolor, lion of judah, etc, is stupid (like wearing a cross if you're not christian) and yeah, real rastas might find it disrespectful with good reason.
having said that, do whatever you feel like as it's your body and your hair.

there's a certain responsability that comes with having locks...you dont work for anyone but yourself, you dont work for money. You make crafts that can be bartered. No eating of meat, no consuming of alcohol...and the list goes on. I do not obey a lot of these principles, but I love the religion and the message. So, I have one lock that Ive had for about 10 years...I consider it homage. I hope that is not offensive. I think (for myself) that if I were to lock all my hair, that I would need to represent the message that locks stand for, and THAT would be offensive if I couldnt live up to it. If anyone ever has a question on the nature of locks, there are plenty of websites on it.

10-17-2006, 05:49 AM
So..you cant just have locks because you want to live a natural..earthy lifestyle???
I want to see where Rastas applied for the patent...
borat
10-17-2006, 03:43 PM
^^^ yup, i can drink as much booze as i want and still wear locks thank you. and it's not even like rastafaris were the first ones to use them anyways, sadhus have been wearing them for thousands of years.
there comes no real responsibility with wearing locks, except maintaining them.

Theres not suppose to be an image attatched to having dreadlocks. There are many reasons why people have dreads. I decided to get mine as a spiritual expirience. For alot of people, its patience, and apreciation. Each dread, a life of its own. Like those who only have like 1 or 2 dreads, theres a deeper reason to why they have them, (usually). So, those who convey having dreads to one culture or religion... I dunno man, I usually just ignore ignorance.

Thank you sister! I have 3 major ones...two smaller ones that just popped up after not brushing my hair for years...
The 3 big ones were each a prayer and goal...deeply spiritual...and would be like losing my arm if i cut one....
I have had the longest one for about 4 years....the other two about 1 to 2 years....if i were a trend monger wanting to rip off the Rastas...which hate my race anyway...i would have gone to the salon, and got really pretty ones. And would have bought a Ethiopian color tam to put over it...
But, my hair represents my being in touch with nature...and living my life as close as I can to my ancestors of old....do you think the painter of Lascaux had clean curly hair and a shaven chin?
People wore dreads before they wore styled hair....all people...

sadhus, rastafaris, john butler, the guys at the reggae soundsystems...
i love my locks, but i am aware that i made them because of influences of society, me and everone else who has locks; ESPECIALLY the "hippy" ones of "freaks", who are basically just living up to a stereotype.

nearly everybody with dreads say that they don't follow fashions, and that it's purely spiritual and bla bla, yet still they all look the same, what's up with that??? hmmm
and another thing, i don't understand why people consider their "home made" dreads better than ones made in salons. come on, dreads are dreads...
i find many "hippies" a bit elitist and better-than-thou, which is sad
heron
10-19-2006, 05:16 AM
its like this, there are those who tattoo for fashion...and those who tattoo for religion...thus is the division....and each sometimes judge the other
On a personal opion note: Since my dreads, as with some others, were done to be more natural, the idea of going to a salon to have them done is obsurd...the whole point in to not have my hair "styled"....Being natural just so happens to result in clumpy hair and dreads....not many options in that..

Dreadlocks did not originate from the Rastas.... it originated from Egypt... but several people have dreadlocks for religious purposes as well. I'm not being harsh by any means but do some research :) Rastas werent the only ones and I dont think you are being disrespectful at all.

Some rasta's view it as disrespectful due to their religious reasons behind them. Others could care less.
But history tells us that Vikings had dreads as well due to their beliefs, so.......poo on them then (rastas) if they can't let it go.

Well said, Rastafarians didn't get dreads until the american slave trade when we started bringing slaves over from india and they escaped to the carribean.
but i do really want dreadlocks, and i dont think it would be disrespectful to rastafarians. i mean, i love jamaican people. I want nothing more than to just live there and I'm not getting dreads because i want to shit all over their religion or anything.

don't imitate, be your own.
a dread can be a very empowered person, but don't think you're imitating anybody else. dread belongs to you as much as it does to jamaicans.

Hair is hair. If our personalities were limited to how we wore our hair then why don't we just change ourselves into a bunch of wigs.
Your personality is not in your hair. Shouldn't it be in your mind/soul/whatever you want to call it?
If you think your hair matters than you really need to take some time and think a little more about what's important to you.
