View Full Version : Baby bird....

The neighbors boy brought me a baby bird today.
It seems to be in good working order...was vigorus and hungry:) we all took turns feeding him mashed wormers. The inside if it's mouth was suprisingly yellow...and there were all these pokey...things. I'd never realised how much birds are like fish before.
In stark contrast it's little barely formed feather and gangly grey legs (whiche were absolutely no use at all) was so bleak...he still has some baby fluff on his fringes...it's so cute.
He'll be alright once he grows into his beak. That things is HUGE.
Then he fell asleep.
He's out on the picnic table nestled in an old kitchen towel.
I hope he makes it, but the odds are against it...poor little bird.
Do they drink anything? I don't know what else baby birds eat either...
*evil grin* Should I just toss him to the Good Reverend A.W. Boomslap and let him return the baby birds soul to Heaven??

Birds I can do! Keep the little fella warm, their body temp is about 110f.
Put him in a covered carboard box or something like that with a towel or something to wrap around him, he doesn't have his buddies to keep him warm or anything so you may want to put a light bulb or hot pad near by. Feed him as much as he will eat. You don't need to mash the worms, if you feel enterprising they make baby bird food or take some dry dog food and soak it in water, then mash that into his mouth. From the description he's probly a robin, they fledge in 2-3 weeks. Good luck.

Nice field, needs a few trees ;)

gotta click it...the secret holding eggplant cookers are holding out on me!
It's so fun feeding the thing! Can you over feed them?? This guy just ate eight earth worms and the things are crawling in and our of his mouth!! Gaaah!!
Do they sleep through the night?? *has new born baby flashbacks*

Yeah they'll sleep all night, keep him covered and dark, it keeps the stress down. I've yet to get a bird over fed
...oh, sometimes the runt or a sickly one, gets booted out of the nest, just be aware...... :(

Aww, he's sleeping again...got him all nestled up in a bird house that was left here when we moved in, and I put the heating pad on low...with my luck he'll be all half cooked by morning.
*wonders how he'd taste in buffalo sauce...*

Where'd Mr. Wu go?
Thanks hannah, so far so good:)
I had no idea something so small could eat sooo much...where does it go??
nirgal

Wu is linked from a funky album site, he comes and goes :P
It all comes out in the end.... you can tell if he's had enough if his crop is full. Did you try the wet dog food? I helps keep them hydrated and has all the nutients ..... monkey chow is good to :)

He's pooing like a freak now...I just remembered how much I don't like cleaning poo up.
I have been giving him moist kitten chow...will that work? I have puppy chow too, spose I could give him both...
What a good little birdie, slept better than a baby:)

It'll be easier once he can get up on a perch :)
Cat food is ok, but dog food was what I was told to use..........
Does he have his feathers or is he still in pins?
HoneySuckleBlue

Yeah Marie, spring is swingin' full tilt now...and it would'nt be spring without tons o bebes. I don't need to be preggers, lol, theres enough of my offspring already running amuk...I'll tell you though I am feeling a very strong baby jones. I just want to hold one though, not all the work that goes with them:) .
I'll switch to the dog food, I have to break up the kitty chow any way because the big 'x's are getting stuck in his craw...and it's a hassel.
I had no idea bird poo smelled so bad...
It's got some tiny little feathers, really small...and um I am guessing it's in the middle of switching from 'pins' cause you can see alot of those pokey little things that turn into feathers.
I wish I had a digital camera...it's so freakin' cute when it get's all tall and squawks for it's food with that mouth that is waaaay too big for it's head.
I have him in my bedroom now, ut when we first put him in the cage and left him on the picnic table the cats were all over that thing. Boomslap was pacing around it and Little puss was laying on top of the cage. Boo is always bringing home voles, field mice and blue birds...we have to get him a bell.

:)
I had a pair of robbins that had to go on vacation with me one year.
Another year M had a baby Bluejay follow her around. It climbed right up on the car ans squawked at her, so she picked it up and brought it here. I put it in a big outdoor fight cage untill he got his flying down right and let him go. Eventualy I had to chase him away because he would hang around on the porch and MasterCat Butch was planing his demise :D

Wow, you guys do know birds:) !
I hope our little pooper learns to fly soon...he smells horrible.
HoneySuckleBlue
05-18-2004, 04:56 PM
found out it was'nt the bird that smelled horrible, but the cat food...I've since switched to the dog food....and oh wow!!! The 'pins' don't fall out they open up...to reveal feathers.
How neat is that...prepackaged feathers
He's almost asleep in my hand now...heehee..shhhhhhh!!

Now look what you did!!
(lol@Marie:) )
*Thinks really, really hard*...dinosaurs??! It looks more like a fish...
nirgal

.... well, we all came from the sea at one point. There is a big debate going on about the bird dinosaur connection. It seems the hip bones and breast bone of many of the dinosaurs are the same as modern birds. It looks like one branch evolved to flight.....
Parrots do have fish breath though.
How about some trivia.....
Most bird feathers (not all though) have no or very little pigment, the color is mainly due to light refraction.
How's he doin'?
:)

He's a cool little bird. I've taken to holding him when I feed him the worms because they tend to get away from him if I don't (but first I give him a few dog food nuggets...it seems after the first bite of food the old stuff needs to be evacuated pronto) Last night he pooed on me which was thoroughly gross, but other than that he's very sweet. I love how sleepy he gets after he eats and he makes those quiet birdy noises like he's snoring and he just falls asleep in my hand.
We've settled into a routine and digging for worms after our dinner has become family fun:)
He's vigorous and talkative...hopefully it won't be long before we can teach him to get his own worms. I have a hard time breaking those suckers in half while they are still squirming...but you gotta do what you gotta do I guess.
That's so strange with the pigment and lack thereof...when do robins get their red breasts?
nirgal
05-19-2004, 03:03 PM
I'm not sure on the robin, I suspect there is some pigment. It seems to be a combination of factor. A good example is a starling that looks almost black on a couldy day but is full of color and shine on a sunny one. Dr Wu is grey because of a powder that coats his feathers (he's waterproof too) Cockatoo's are the same way...
Can he stand yet? Or perch on a branch?
HoneySuckleBlue
05-19-2004, 06:57 PM
He can't perch yet, but he stands as tall as he can get when it's chow time!
He can grip my finger when I hold him but he's still pretty wobbly and gets around more on his 'knees' than his feet.

My baby looks kindas like this one, though he's more pins than he is feathers.

The little bird can fly a bit now but he's developed a cold or something...the last two days he had a little sneeze but this morning when he woke up his chatter was liquid~ey and he was sneezing more. :( he's not eating as aggressively as he has been and I'm not sure how to help him...
nirgal
05-22-2004, 11:42 PM
Ohh, I was afraid that might happen..... They are very suseptable to respetory problems. Keep him clean, warm and covered away from drafts and hope for the best. :( Sometimes they pull out of it.
You could try getting in touch with one of the wildlife rescue groups.

I sent an email...is 8:30 too late to call??
He sounds a little better than he did this morning, but he flew off my hand this morning and cleared the deck...and little puss came out of the underbrush and pounced him. :( I don't know if that poor little bird is the luckiest bird alive or a dead bird walking...but he came away with a scratch. I hope he heals well.
I burnt my leg on a tail pipe...and banged my head on the bed I was putting some final touches on, plus a whole bunch of other petty things that all add up to a bummin' day. Man I can't wait to go to sleep tonight....today SUCKS!!!!*yells into the abyss and throws rocks, puts car in neutral and then pushes it over the side and then sits to pout...*

Then this won't make you feel any better - Angelgodiva slipped on a hillside during her camping/fishing trip and messed up her knee. She's in a brace. Her post is in Random Thoughts.
Sorry to be the bluebird of happiness.
Hope da boid pulls through.

I had a great day :) So......
I'll send you some positive energy tonight, It all balances out.
Most wildlife people are dedicated to what they do, I don't think time makes any difference..... Fingers crossed.
I'll meet you up on the ridge where the trail turns off that leads to that mossy pond

You know what I never did see that bird again, though he was flying the second time he got away.
*wonders about Angel and adds to the positive energy heading in her direction:) *
