and i very seriously suggest avoiding the nicotine patch...i used to smoke two packs a day on many occasions, though more often around a pack and a half....

even still, the first day of the nicotine patch i was fucking sick as hell. people even commented that i looked disturbed and pale.

they can give you nightmares and bizarre dreams if worn twenty four hours.

it was awful....

i definitely think the gum is the better alternative. having nicotine administered continually for the majority of the day is definitely not a good way to beat an addiction...the patch left me more addicted when i couldnt quit smoking.

the gum worked better for me. not as much nicotine effect as a cigarette for the most part...but just enough to help satisfy an urge to smoke. and just go as long in between as you can, and work your way down.

it helped me a good deal.

too many side effects with nicotine patches, severe ones sometimes. plus continuous nicotine isnt a good idea if you want to work your way away from an addiction, in my opinion.

I smoked for a year and a half and when I decided to quit I just quit cold turkey. I smoked a lot of weed to help with the withdrawals which apparently isnt healthy because it could just replace the addiction. Worked for me though.

If you have trouble stopping then just throw away all your fags and use will power to not buy anymore. You cant smoke what you dont have. I have heard good things about patches but imo it is just part of the tobacco industry scam. Good luck, the sooner you quit the easier it should be.

Cold turkey works.

Quitting isn't really the problem...

It's not starting again.

Cold turkey works.

Quitting isn't really the problem...

It's not starting again.Right, I "quit" almost 6 times when I was smoking. I got to the two week point and figured I'd made it over the hump and let my guard down. And then you're smoking again.

Just go cold turkey, no exceptions. I've been successfully free of smoking since New Years after nearly a year of addiction.

But right now I have a pack of Reds in my pocket that a friend bought for his 18th birthday, smoked one, and then gave it to me. That asshole :P.

^ I think that quitting and starting again are kind of the same thing. Like if you're going to start again soon after "quitting," than you haven't really quit now have you. Unless of course we're talking about a period of months or more. Than the problem would be starting again cause it's something familiar and comfortable.

I quit almost 2 years ago and had a damn hard time. I tried quitting while I was pregnant and just couldn't do it. I had seriously cut back though, and was smoking like ultra lights, maybe 5 a day. And previously I had been smoking a pack a day, maybe more sometimes. It wasn't until I went into the hospital for the delivery, and was there for like 4 days that I did quit, and never started again. I did try smoking a cigarette a couple times after this though under extreme duress, (sp?), and I hated it!! It tasted awful, and made me feel sick. So I'll NEVER smoke cigarettes again in my life.

Cold turkey is very hard and frustrating!!!! And the patch and gum don't usually work. My friend was going to try that new stuff you see on the commercial with the turtle. I haven't talked to her in awhile though so not sure if she tried it or if it worked for her. It's something to be prescribed by your doctor though.

Good luck. It's probably one of the hardest things you'll ever do.

"nearly a year of addiction??" puuuulease!!!!!!! You weren't really addicted if you were only smoking for like a year at 16 years old.

I smoked a pack a day for nearly 10 years.. That's a real addiction my friend.

i would just go with your username and "smokepot" instead of cigs LOL. ive never liked smoking cigs and ill i could stand was to smoke like half a menthol after smoking some pot but that was it. all my friends smoke like newports or reds i cant stand it. my dad has smoked for a long time and he smoked camel filter 100s and man i hate the smell of them things after he hasnt smoked on for a while. like when i wake up and then smell cigs it drives me crazy. i wish that more people would just see how dumb the concept of cigarettes are. i just cant under stand how people get addicted to anything if you have some sort of common sence. you have to figure inhaling smoke with like 50 chemicals in it is bad for your lungs.

^ I think that quitting and starting again are kind of the same thing. Like if you're going to start again soon after "quitting," than you haven't really quit now have you.Yeah, I was trying to emphasize the irony when I put the quotes around "quit". Sorta like the Mark Twain quote "Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it hundreds of times".

And I might not have been addicted to your hard-X-core level. But I was enough to know that it wasn't something that I wanted the rest of my life. I was smoking a half a pack of reds a day, and would get debilitating, nausea inducing, head-into-wall migraines for the first couple of days after I stopped. Lovely stuff, I'm glad to be rid of it.

How i see it is that if you want to quit smokin the cigs, or even anything for that matter. Force yourself to man up to it. Nobody can do shit for yourself but you. Its your life man if you want to quit you will, if not well keep puffin. You are being sucked into a habit that is killin your life faster than you want. It is hard man i hear ya, shit im dealin with it everyday. I have family that i fear, i will lose them, over somethin so small that lasts what 3 mins?

I try to keep myself from smokin by thinkin this.

Im sure there has been a time where you walkin down the street and you see some guy/girl who is FAT. They have at least 50+ pounds they dont need. Do they not care for there health? They fuckin eat this shit and complain about it. He/she wont like me because im fat. Damn i need to buy another pant size bigger? Yea well maybe thats true. Maybe you need to get off your lazy ass and do something. Take care of your health man, if you dont got health, you are D.E.A.D.

Social situations are a bitch. You in a crowd with 6 people whom all smokin. All i can say, and im in that position 4 times a week at least. Just keep up wind so you cant 2nd inhale. Look at your friend or whoever and just turn it down. Over and over and over. Say FUCK that! I care for my health. You motherfuckers can say what you want. In the end they will be jealious (for real not fucking around, everyone cares for there health, if they didnt they may walk into oncoming traffic, but they wont because they care for what?). I dont care what any fucker says to you about not smokin. I truly believe inside, they are jelious. In the fact that you are sayin NO to them and QUITTING at the same time. Hell yeah brother do it.

I dont know how much sence i made but if you want to quit something, cold turkey. You have to do it. Its your choice. I choose not to smoke meth because its stair up bad shit. Just because the government allows something doesnt mean its good for your health. Quit man you will thank youself later. You will thank yourself over and over and over and over again.

I smoked ciggies for about 10 years. decided to quit, took a weekend where I smoked about 6-7 packs of cigs. chain smoking. I'd have 3-4 cigs in a row, no matter how disgusting they tasted. by sunday, I really did not want to smoke any more. forced myself to smoke a final pack on the sunday, then I didn't have any kind of longing for'em for 4-5 days.. after that, whenever I'd want one, I'd just think about sucking down on that 4th cig in a row. yuck. no more urge.

after a few months, it was just a matter of not smoking. pretty easy, and remembering how disgusting cigs were still worked whenever I'd feel like one. been almost two years now, in the last 6 months I've occasionally smoked while drinking but I always regret it the next day.

Ive been smoking cigs for a year but im not physically addicted to them what so ever. The only times i wanna smoke is when im bored, cause its fun to light up and smoke a marb when your not really do anything. If im doing something somewhat entertaining, i will never have any urge to smoke a cig.

Im the only one like this out of my group of nicotine fiends. Im the kid who whenever buys a pack, gives out atleast 5 to friends. I blow alot of money on em, but at this time i can afford it. So when i wanna quit for good, i will.

I am trying to quit too.. again.. for the 10th time or so.. it's hard. Paches help the physical part.. like nicotine withdrawal.. but for the behavioral part.. you just gotta really want to quit and do it.. and that's hard, especially when you live around smokers or have habits like always have a cigarette with a drink or after eating.. like me.

good luck.

doesn't take the urge away for good. makes it easier to appreciate how disgusting smoking can be though, which can make it easier not to have a cigarette. but in the end, as long as you don't light a new cig, you're fine. look at lighting a cig as losing the game, you should have no problem.

I quit smoking cigarettes using an amazing and very simple method. I suffered no nicotine withdrawals, in fact no bother at all! I just didn't feel like smoking from one moment to the next! The method is called EFT and there's someone out there who offers free (donate if you want) email consultations. Here is the website: http://www.info-santanyi.com/eftservice/eftforall.html

I hope it works for you as good as it did for me, best of luck!

i smoked cigs for about 4 years. and for the last year a little over a pack a day. i just quit cold turkey in november. its the only way to quit, the patches just keep your mind on it, and see how long you can go without it. just stop. i figured all you have to do is nothing. its the easiest thing you can do. im not even sure why i quit, i just didnt feel like getting up to get another pack, and i was like shit a couple of my friends quit, i could do it to. and that was it. first time i tried to quit, and havent touched tobacco since (cept hookah once a couple weeks ago, but cmon). good luck, try doin it with a friend that you think can do it better than you, and show em up. itll be soo good for you, everytime i see someone smoking i just think of how nice it is to not be addicted anymore, and not have to deal with it. watching people freeze outside, and come back in reeking of smoke, glad its outta my life, though it was fun for a while/

It's gonna suck for a while - first you'll have the physical part to deal with, then he social/habitual part - so psyche yourself out for that, and then keep in mind all the advantages you'll get - no more smelly body & breath & hair & clothes... (ugh) no more yellow fingers, and extra (how many?) bucks a week in your pocket ...

there is some comraderie w/ being the only folk outside on the freezing days, puffin a fag (smoker are the only people now who get *out* of the office during the day) & - shit, smoking does look cool, so be prepared to feel a little sad about losing things like that - but just keep in mind all the gain (like health - & longer life, & as a couple of people have said - smelling better)

Just be prepared, don't be a wuss, & when you are 30 you will look back on the quitting time & thank yourself

OH - another thought - this might be a time to take up a new hobby - the girl who said knitting wasn't far off. Crocheting is easier - you can make a hat your first day... Do you skateboard? start skating!

You could do what my parents did when they found out they were pregnant with me. Just have someone drive you to a really remote camping spot and leave you there (with friends, booze, and bud, of course) for a week.

Some people I've talked to who've quit said they got themselves out of it psychologically by finding some other small thing to do whenever they got a craving. As soon as you think, "I'm gonna go have a cigarette," before you even think about the fact that you're quitting and it sucks, do something else. Knit a hat, do a few cartwheels, jack off, carry around a nerf gun and shoot someone nearby with it. That last one would definitely distract you for a bit.

the doing something else other then smoking thing seems like it would work good. alot of older people ive talked to say that its more of a habit of just reaching into their pocket and sliding a cig out rather then the smoking of it. my dad said he quit for a while when he was younger and he did it by chewing gum just so when he thought of a cig he had something to reach for.i can see how smoking for years would cause that type of a habit without even thinking about it. take like typing or riding a bike for example the more you do it the better you get without even thinking about doing it. i guess smoking cigs isnt exactly something you want to get "better" at perfecting LOL
