I will probably get thrown out of the “Hippie Union“, but there is no such thing as a “Hippie”. That was a construct by the media just like “Gen X”, but we adopted the term for ourselves as a kind of shorthand. Just like the “Hippie Movement”, also a construct by the media, “Hippies were never joiners, so “Hippie Movement” is an oxymoron.
So what are “Hippies”? I think CSNY said it best when they sang: “You who are on the road”. What road you might ask? It’s been called many things Love, Wisdom, Beauty, Truth and Ever Lasting Life. It’s the road away from this world we live in. No, not running away, but realizing that this world and its governments are the problem and not worth trying to save, then walking away to build a new world.
Well look around, what do you see? Do you see all the people with hate, anger, jealousy and contentions in their hearts? Do you see the people that have lost their innocence and instead of looking to get it back are tying to take innocence away from others who still have it? This whole world is based on Hate just look at the wars, the slavery, the poverty, the ghettos, the hunger, the destruction and the pollution, I mean people think the earth is just one big trash dump.
That’s why the phase “drop out”. It was to get people to think, that they can think outside the box. To get them to realize that Hate is not the only way to live ones life, that there was an alternative, Love, and we set out to prove it the best we could.
How? First, by loving life and enjoying it, run, jump, dance, walk bare foot, climb trees, play games, smile and laugh. (I can’t believe how many photos of people I’ve seen on this website of people frowning and looking oh so serious, People, lighten up, this is suppose to be FUN) One way you can tell if someone is a “Hippie” is, if just by looking at him, it makes you feel good and you want to smile and be friends ‘cause you know he’s having a good time.
Next, by loving others and no, that doesn’t mean you have to have sex with them, although that can be fun too.
Let me define Love to quote an old wise book: “Love is long-suffering and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, does not get puffed up, does not behave indecently, does not look for its own interests, does not become provoked. It does not keep account of the injury. It does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
So where does that leave us? If you want to be a “Hippie” live Love, put it into all you do. Remember we’re are all different and so we will express Love differently, so try not to hinder others in their expression of Love but encourage others to express Love all the more in the ways that they can.
The goal is to one day tip the balance of this world from Hate to Love. When that happens, all the problems that we argue about and that seem so hard to solve will become simple and easy to fix.
See you on the road!

PS Although drugs can be fun “Hippies” used them primarily to find the road and after that walking the road was more important than the drugs.
