im not really the best source for this, but since you've got nothing else yet ill chime in. theres not really a set diet for hippies, im sure many are vegetarian or vegan, but not all. for example Owsley Stanley (Bear - large acid producer in the 60's, part of the dead family - the dancing bear came from him, sound man for the dead), swears by his all meat diet. he claims to have only eaten meat no veggies or fruits or manufactered foods - only meat since the 60's. a good deal of hippies do follow an organic vegan lifestyle, but many more probably just follow a "normal diet" like other non-hipies. theres also the ppl that followed the dead around, and many phish followers, and ppl that attend festivals, that eat alot of "lot foods", which includes grilled cheese, veggie burritos, any type of burrito, and basically anything thats easy to make, cheap, and easy to carry, but mostly grilled cheese and veggie burritos is what i think of when i think of lot food. of course im sure the obvious you can think up yourself like "living off the land", and having your garden, and the fruits and vegetables that come along with that.

as for lavender, what do you mean do they use it? as a food? - they do use it - along with millions of other ppl for medicinal purposes, a fragrance, and for aesthetic reasons.

hope this helps, sorry i cant provide you with more info

It was reported that at one time, Ozzie Osbourne, bit the head of a bat. Not quite sure, if Ozzie ate the whole damn thing tho'. LoL.

Seriously, you pretty much ate and did whatever you wanted, unless of course, you happened to belong to groups that follow a strictly vegetarian diet, like the Hare Krishna's.

Flowers would be a perfect theme.
You can also make some marijuana spiked chocolate cake or cookies.
It can make your friends float. :)

Perhaps, she can offer the professor a bite of marijuana cake.
What better way to educate your class about the evils of the establishment's stupid war against a plant.

I thought hippies eat granola? lol

Actually, lavender can be used in cooking. Never thought of it as a hippie thing.

the space cake would be cool but I don't think they're gonna appreciate it at school.

So is there any specific drink (alcohol/non alcohol) that was populair in the 70's. How about absinthe?

Here you can find a whole lot about what we eat....

http://hipforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=530

You can also read my book online, as I discuss this there too.

You can learn a lot about keeping yourself healthy from hippies... :)

Good luck!

Basically you'll want to cook a vegan organic meal. Which is the reason I only went vegetarian, simpler!!

Hi Schmeg. Hippies were/are not some exotic animal that has to have a certain diet! However, the leaning towards a diet that would create a more sustainable future, with limited impact on the earth, led many to explore vegetarian/ vegan/ wholefood/ rawfood eating plans. There is a great little book- "Diet for A Small Planet" by Frances Moore- Lapp ( I think that's how you spell it) that you may find helpful in your research. Blessings to you.

I know from reading things about the 60s that moonshine and corn whiskey were among the favorites of hippies as these were all homemade drinks and pretty strong

of course it is a school thing so I would go with kool-aid or organic tea

I understand some feel that most can just eat anything, but what good is it if what you're eating isn't making any sort of difference? I would go for anything organic and locally grown.

lol. I never had any rose syrup or orange water back in the day.. that's all new age.. we original hippie from the Haight Street Crew ate Fish and Chips..we also ate Brown Rice n Veggies, Stews, Cassaroles.. with meat. We ate whatever we could.. we ate everything.. fruit veggies, meat taters all of it.. we was a hungry lot:) there were some that just ate fruit n vegies. We drank beer.. hardly any water.. and we baked bananna nut bread..we had all kinds of food selection in San Fran. We had the hungraian resturant, China Town, and Steak Houses all up n down Market Street.. we would panhandle on Market St. and either eat at a steak house or take the Trolly to China Town.

When we ate at home we ate just like everyone else.

Can't remember hearing anything about absinthe,

but there was stalk tea
brownies
bhang
all of these contained marijuana, definately not good for a class room situation, its only funny when cheech and chong do it lol

But seriously, most hippies of the '60 were usually broke, so they drank whatever they could afford
I remember dandelion tea and nettle tea
Also there was a mushroomy looking thing they called Kombacha or something like that.
It was a culture that you put in a bucket of water, waited a week and then drank it. Mor of a '70 - '80's think I think.

I should think you would be safe to feed them anything home grown or organic, most of us lived out of our own gardens and used a lot of goats milk, which you can use to make cheese or anything you use milk for,

Hopefully we've all given you some ideas, cheers Hippy from Oz

Wine and beer. Veggie Burritos, Grilled Cheese, Egg rolls.

But like hippies from the sixties just ate anything cause they were broke all the time. It's more about conserving food and making sure that none gets wasted than what your eating, to me.

haha. hippies don't subscribe to vegetarian diets because they had to or wanted to. Back then, we ate veggies because they were free and we farmed. Most heads that I lived with ate meat when we could get it. We had a few pigs and sheep that ol man Tinney down the road gave us. He was an old farmer down the road that would bring us some homemade wine and staples and news. Give us a ride into town from time to time too.
Somehow "organic" has come to mean "hippy". We were organic for the simple reason that we did not buy fertilizers and the like to support corporate greed and heck, everything you need is provided for you anyway.

We all eat twigs and berries (except for the occasional hash brownie) and hand out Peta flyers... and no, it's not lavendar, it's patchouli. ;)
