Just and observation:
it seems that the more successful societies have had either a religious state and secular populace (england and most of scandanavia leap to mind), or a secular state and religious populace (like the united states and turkey).
It seems when you have both a religious state and populace, shit happens, lookit most of the middle east (including israel). Countries that have, or had, both a secular government and society tend to be assholes also, (the former USSR, Maoist China, Nazi Germany).
So, maybe we both need eachother in some way. We give balance to our societies, to secularists make us accountable to others, including those who believe in different ways. The religious help us hold our actions accountable, that we are not the biggest game in town, and that what we do counts on a divine level...
or maybe i get fuzzy around the solstice, anyways, happy annual solstice observance of your choice.
