o.k. where to start? basics i guess..
i'm holly really, not nerthus. i'm 18 in less than a month, studying english lit history and french at college. aren't i exciting?
i like music of all types pretty much (i'm listening to asian dub foundation now), parties, languages, history (especially revolution and stuff), hugs, people, the sea, literature and vikings! i'm gonna do something like viking studies at university. probably not very practical but it's going to be awesome so i don't care.
- i'm a bit hungover.
- i want my dreads to stop being so damn fluffy.
- i'm a grammar and spelling freak. i know when i say that people will start checking all of my grammar, punctuation and spelling for mistakes.well i would.
- i've recently discovered a love for good poetry. not writing it because i'm pretty shit at that. poetry does something prose can never quite, i'm not sure what that is though.
any questions?
i have one: how is everyone this winter? missing summer yet?
happy winter solstice everyone! :) i believe it's at 6am tomorrow in england, unless my calculations are off.

there's a nice one at kilve near where i live where you can find loads of fossils, that's always fun! also when me and my friends went to combe martin camping for a bit there was this great little cove and to get to it you had to walk up loads of winding lanes, through mud, then down a massive cliffside on very dodgy steps. worth it when we got there though. so much to explore and climb, it was like being in some weird country.
the sea rocks :) i can see it from my window too which is nice.

If you could steal any one of the following things from Noel Edmonds, which would it be and why?

b) his neatly trimmed beard
c) his legs

did you have fun? :)Yeah, some of the best years of my life so far, I think. It's definitely different to the usual university experience. It's not exactly top of the list of party universities, but you can still have fun and there's plenty of social life to be had with or without the Ra Ra types - you'll definitely get that at King's. Try to make friends with townies though, that's where it's at, especially when it comes to Strawberry Fair and the raves they have around the area....

I was quite strongly involved in left wing politics there. One of the best friends I made there is an ardent communist. We helped set up a Hands Off Venezuela group, which is going from strength to strength now I think and the Anti-Arms Trade campaign is very strong there given the need to pressure the colleges to stop investing in arms companies. A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action is a group dedicated to helping get left-wing students elected to student union positions. More widely about town, you'll find CamPeace, Stop the War, Green and Respect groups. Despite the image and the significant numbers of public school Tory boys, Cambridge, though by no means a hot-bed of revolution, has plenty for lefties and environmentalists to involve themselves with. And you definitely picked the right college, as King's has by far the highest number of leftists there....

yay, feeling a bit more enthusiastic about it now. i know there are currently no members of the socialist party of england and wales there, and there are a lot at oxford so i was a bit worried that cambridge was lacking in left wingers in general. silly really.

- my hair varies in length for some strange reason. the shortest dreads are around 7-8 inches, and the longest are probably close to double that. is that accurate enough for you?
- i did make it yeah :) thanks. i dropped art after AS n hadn't done any for ages so i thought i'd paint a picture last week. badly composed and horrible colours if you ask me...
- no i don't, if i did it would just be clear though. nail varnish doesn't really suit me.
- i have no problems with measuring one's nose. i do, however, have a problem with measuring other people's noses. i'm not sure why, you could probably trace it back to my childhood...

Im in a political Group. It is called P.I.G.S (i have a love of pigs and my friend came up with it) would you like to join? it stands for Political Idiots Get Saucy :)
do you love marmite or hate it?
Do you know how the name for marmite came about?
if not it was when mayionaise and marmalade had a massive fight (marmalade "borrowed" maionaise's hat without asking) and then they ended up both falling into a jar and so the person there at the time called it Marmaionaise but that wasnt very catchy so they changed it.
The End.
How many senses do you have?

Well it is.i don't think i'll join your group, i think i'll make a group to rival yours and beat it in every election you run in! or, i will in fact join and then i'll start stirring up hatred between the members, create a faction or three and then spread stories to all the tabloids of the sex pacts and animal molesting that went on and leave your reputations in the dirt.
i am a marmite lover. it is the food of the gods. i'm also one of the rare people that like bovril. expecially chicken bovril.
i don't know how it came about. sorry. *feels like a disappointment* i wish i did though. i know that it used to be made from the waste yeast produced in the brewing of guinness though! yeah. that was a boring fact. sorry about that.
that was such a sweet tale. poor mayonnaise, such a lovely fellow. :( and i think marmaionaise is very catchy. i'd buy it.

Hi, welcome to the forums, etc.
A lot of people (them doing Law, Medicine and the like especially) think Norse, Anglo-Saxon and Viking is a completely useless course. What would you say to them to try and convince them otherwise? (Not that I feel that way, ancient languages fucking rock, just playing devil's advocate here).
Oh, and I'm in Cambridge as well, first year. I'm at Anglia Ruskin though, the OTHER Cambridge university ;) I think King's college is about 5 minutes walk away (half an hour from my house).
Oh, and it says on your bebo thing (not entirely sure what that is) that you're into Lou reed. Was he better with The Velvet Underground or after he left them? What's your fave Lou reed song? And if you're into Velvet Underground as well, what do you think of the version of heroin without Lou reed on it (personally I think it's shite).

personally i prefer lou reed on his own, although to be fair that's probably just because i listen to him more... new york is an amaaazing album, probably my favourite as a whole rather than just one song on it. hmm.. yeah i can't choose a song.

i can watch him for a bit, maybe twenty minutes, and then he just becomes very very infuriating. :) i like sarcasm but male chauvinist arseholes just aren't my thing.saying that, i'm probably just over-sensitive, as i know lots of people who love him.
well it really does depend what you consider success. if you're trying to solve world poverty then i'd say success is definitely good, but if you mean the kind that can be measured by how much you earn then good thoughts from others are better.
mainly because people are real and money is just an abstract idea. friends are nice. :)

If there were no danger of injury, do you think you would like to wrestle with a bear?almost certainly. i'd probably do it if there was still the chance of minor injury too. but not if there was danger of death or loss of limbs. weeelll...actually, maybe minor limbs would be acceptable. toes i could cope with. do toes count as limbs? they're extremities really. hmm.
i would like to do it if: danger < losing small limbs
i dont' know if you've been asked this yet, but how did you come up with the name 'nerthus'?nerthus is a germanic earth goddess. she disappeared somehow in mythology and no one can really explain it! i thought that was pretty cool. she possibly had a sex change and became njord. plus wherever she goes there is peace and parties, so wherever she went i reckon she's having loads of fun. :)
tacitus, roman historian, wrote about her in first century ad:
‘A general festival takes place, and public rejoicing is heard, whenever the goddess directs her way. No war is thought of; arms are laid aside, and the sword is sheathed. The sweets of peace are known, and then only relished.’
so yeah.. that's why. :) make much sense?

If you were at the top of a very tall ladder holding a small very sharp knife and a big can of blue paint and you felt the ladder start to topple, but looking down noticed that there was a procession of French children on a school trip walking past underneath, in order to steady yourself would you drop the can of paint which would undoubtedly turn lots of the kids blue and perhaps knock one or two of them out, or would you drop the small very sharp knife, which would have a good chance of missing all the children but which, if it did hit one of them, would almost certainly stick into the top of one of their heads and kill them outright? Third option, would you keep hold of both, thereby being unable to steady yourself, and falling down, ladder, knife, paint and all, into the middle of a busy street below causing a multi-car pileup?

nerthus
03-18-2008, 11:50 PM
i've literally just sorted out my room, so it's not a tip :D that's probably why i suggested it, subconsciously. used to have no floor, but i fixed my wardrobe n got some more bookshelves (still not enough) and now i have loads of space! it's wicked.
hardest drug? probably coke one day, but only because it's around. actually i'm rather restrained, due to the fact i'm really creeped out by snorting substances. that means that coke and ketamine are pretty much out of reach for me even if i want to do em. a shame, but meh. probably for the best.
acid some time soon i expect. got a couple of acid freak friends so... :) but for now i'm sticking to good ol' mdma.
as for alcohol, i seem to be drawn to whiskey, although it makes me go completely crazy. generally i drink wine on civilised nights, real cider when i can afford it, shitty strongbow etc. when i'm skint, followed by whiskey at whoever's house i end up at. fairly pleasant.
the worst mixture of alcohol i've ever had was with my friend jimi. everyone had fucked off or fallen asleep so we drank all the alcohol no one would touch. that was a bottle of triple sec (sickly sweet orange liqueur), a bottle of gone off dooleys (toffee cream vodka) and some rather bizarre bottle of alcopop..plus something else i think. that had been preceded by beer throughout the evening. that is not a good mix. although strangely neither of us threw up or were particularly bad the next day.

Woah that Tegu thing's cool, always loved lizards, specially Tuataras:

they're one of the oldest species around. About 200 million years.
White bread or brown bread?
nerthus
03-20-2008, 07:16 PM
that's a pretty lizard.:D
tegus are small dog sized, and can be kept in the hosue a bit like a dog too. they're awesome.
brown, definitely. or wholemeal, with seeds in. or spelt. ever tried spelt flour? tis nice..
Finnaz
03-20-2008, 07:32 PM
Seconded on the wholemeal. Spelt flour? Hmm, never tried it, so I shall aim to.
More questioning, favourite religion?
nerthus
03-20-2008, 07:46 PM
haha, not a fan of religion as an idea really. buuut...probably taoism, if that counts? it's the only one i agree with on any level.
Finnaz
03-20-2008, 07:55 PM
Yeah same, Taoism and Janism (mainly on an admiration level) strike me as the most moral of the lot. Also, what's happened to the pic in your sig?

Skirt or jeans?
Whats your view on deforestation bar the obvious.
nerthus
03-21-2008, 01:34 PM
i've climbed on one of those wally thingys, and i failed amazingly. i was, and still am, a complete weakling.
i've replaced my sig with a picture of me drinking cider at beautiful days. will that do?
JEANS! no competition really. skirts are nice and all, but they don't really suit me. plus it's winter. what about you?
deforestation? it's ridiculous. i assume that's the obvious opinion. i agree with controlled deforestation, yknow for producing paper and such like. but the rate at which we're wiping out the rainforest is appalling.
did you know some of the big industries that take up rainforest space are palm oil, and growing soy? i think it's the type of soy they feed chicken, but still. so that's one more reason to be vegetarian. :)

I'm rather on the weak side too, but I weigh practically nothing so I can wall/rock climb quite easily. Yeah, loving the new sig, there's a weird curved line int he cup, makes it look like there's two cups. The quote gave me a giggle too.
nerthus
03-21-2008, 06:01 PM
a weird curve?? i don't see it.
that quote about happiness really sums up festivals i think. :D a temporary absence of reality.

Ooh aaaaand, if it hasn't been asked yet. Would you go to prison for something you believed in, and if so, for how long?

In answer to your question I'm one of those odd people who prefers skirts, i layer them to stay warm and i find them comfier.
And yay for being on the weak side! I once got half way up a climbing wall.. I think. It was fun but I'm actually better at cavibg, since I'm small and don't put on weight.
nerthus
03-25-2008, 07:32 PM
hehe damn you light and agile people. ah well, hopefully we'll never end up in some kind of bizarre wall climbing/caving competition together. although, i'd kind of like it to happen just to see how we end up in that position, if that makes sense. sounds like the kind of thing we'd find ourselves involved in when surfacing from an alcohol induced coma.
'shit! we're suspended from a wall! and they want us to move upwards!what? aaah cannibals! that was some potent moonshine..'
happens all the time in somerset.
Ooh aaaaand, if it hasn't been asked yet. Would you go to prison for something you believed in, and if so, for how long?yes, and if it wasn't counter-productive to the cause then as long as necessary. it's not like you can just change your beliefs when threatened with punishment is it? although i've never been in that kind of situation, so maybe you can, i don't know.
i uh..don't really believe in prisons as an effective device against crime. i don't know what i'd do if that was anything to do with why i was being put away.. interesting. must think that through some day.

I'd second that one, I wonder to what level you can claim civil disobedience though.
"Your honour, I was merely protesting the ridiculous ban on 'murder'"

the criminalisation of genocide is one of the single biggest banes of my life.
i think i might write an e-petition. what do you think?

i'm not sure they'd listen to this one, somehow. :D however hypocritical it is of them!
ah well, i'll manage...

It may have been asked by now, but wheres your sig pic from? And why does that man have a piano on his head?
nerthus
03-27-2008, 07:30 PM
my sig pic is from beautiful days last year, last night watching the levellers. :)
and, although thinking about it this isn't really an explanation for the keyboard at all, the theme of days that year was hats. so technically, he should've been wearing a hat, not a keyboard..
we loved that man. and his keyboard head.

What would be your ultimate: Hairstyle, Paradise and piece of technology
Ooh and what would you do if you won the lottery (assuming you've already given most of it to charity or whatnot.)
nerthus
03-27-2008, 09:46 PM
ultimate hairstyle = mohawk, without question.
ultimate paradise = a never ending festival, with never ending supply of mdma and shrooms and no comedowns, and lots and lots of gypsy and folk music, drum and bass at nights, all of my friends, and lots of attractive cool people.
ultimate piece of technology = that's difficult. i'll get back to you on that one.
if i won the lottery it wouldn't go to charity, don't be silly. i kind of don't really believe in charity. :D i'd probably donate some to the socialist party or something. they're always strapped for cash. then i'd... probably travel the world, or fund other people to travel the world. i think it's important for people to break out of their little boxes. meet others of their species. it's good for you.
Finnaz
03-27-2008, 09:53 PM
I'd pretty much agree with you there, cept I'd go for a mohawk with dreads either side. Oh and I'd use the money to fund some kind of castle in the sky (floating using electromagnets) which I'd then use to DESTROY THE MOON!
nerthus
03-27-2008, 10:06 PM
Oh and I'd use the money to fund some kind of castle in the sky (floating using electromagnets) which I'd then use to DESTROY THE MOON!that is the best idea i've heard, ever!
if i win the lottery, you can have the money. :)

Why don't you believe in charity?
nerthus
03-28-2008, 07:46 AM
Why don't you believe in charity?i think the real question here is..why are you up so early? are you feeling okay?
i support it for helping people who are suffering, but it doesn't change anything does it? that's the problem, it fools people into thinking that if they give a (generally relatively small) sum of money to a group - on which, might i add, there are few checks to see how effectively they're using their money - that their consciouses are clear and they've done the best they can to help people worse off than themselves. it's silly. if anything it makes stuff worse! it detracts from people trying to fix the cause of the issue. so yeah. that's why. i'm trying to think of a good example.. meh i'll post one later, got work to do. :)

I often stay up working through the night. It's when I write the best. Have been working on chapter 3 and blogging for Socialist Unity. But that's not the real question. The real question is why don't you believe in charity. The real answer is this:
I see charity as a painkiller to a cancer patient. It will never directly address the cause of, say, poverty. It will never cure the cancer. It can only alleviate some of the most extreme effects. A favourite quote of mine is by Dom Helder Camara, I expect you'll have come across it: "When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist." Naturally we socialists recognise the causes of poverty lie in capitalist relations of production. Why the poor have no food owes chiefly to to the corruption of third world governments and exploitation by first world countries and multinational corporations. Reaching a lasting solution to such problems, then, can only be through surgical removal of the tumour, through altering or replacing the underlying structures of the global capitalist economy. But even the most ardent socialist such as myself can see this is a distant dream. And in the meantime, while our cancer patient sits on a very long NHS waiting list, what should be done? Do they continue to suffer and their pain be used to motivate us sooner towards revolution. Or do we rely on the painkiller of charity in the meantime?

You're just saying that so you can steal my brilliant metaphorical flourishes in the future
nerthus

i'm so not. seriously, that's strange.
well, it's a brilliant analogy, so i guess it's not so surprising we both came up with it. ;)

Great minds do think alike, supposedly.
I have a friend who, with alarming frequency, will say exactly the same thing at exactly the same time as me. Great for playing jinx. He says I can read his mind. Though I do wonder, if that's the case, all he ever thinks about must be absolute inane bollocks....

i think it has to be said that that's more likely to be a case of 'fools seldom differ'.
