If so you would know why I started my message in that way.

As for other people, if you're talking about things like gay rights, it's a given that gay people would support gay rights. But a hell of a lot of stright people support them too (honest decent folk). Now if they go around talking about gay rights, everyone is going to assume they are gay. It's not that they are assamed to be asspciated with gay people (after all, if they were, why would they be talking about it in the first place), it's probally more their way of saying "you don't need to be gay to support gay rights". It seems to give it some more strength to what they are saying because they are not saying it for their own benefit (after all, if they are stright, what would gay rights do for them?).

Now OK, there are some people that would say "I'm not gay, but....", but that's just because they are insecure. I don't think they mean to insult, they just say it before thinking...

I can see how it might be annoying... but I don't think you should really take offence.

...nah, not in high school. Maybe in the real world it's more likely that if they say it that quickly they actually are, but I know about twenty straight girls who've done that to me. I think if you're an openly gay person they're more likely to say "I'm not gay" right away, as opposed to talking with other open-minded straight people.

I do agree that in simple personal conversations, it's ridiculous. Like when you come out to someone and they feel the need to point out their own virtue before condoning your revelation.

But in general, it doesn't bother me at all, frankly.

I figure: a) queer people make up a very small percentage of society, no matter what Kinsey said, it's around 3%. b) straight people make up an overwhelming majority. c) if the most accepting individuals in that majority promote their heterosexual/absolute acceptance combination to others, straight people on the fence are a lot more likely to listen.

Too bad it's necessary, but it makes perfect sense. I actually think it's a good thing when a straight advocate is very clearly seen as just that. Sadly, it gives he or she more credibility.
