Canadians need a passport after January 1st 2008 to get to the states. I don't think the same thing applies to Americans. Just a driver's license will work.

Actually, I just renewed my passport last week. They postponed the Canadian passport requirements to travel into the States again. You have two more months (past January 1st) to use a proof of citizenship + photo ID to get into the USA.

BTW, a driver's licence does not prove citizenship. You need a birth certificate or immigration papers to go along with it in order to cross the border. (I went to NYC from Canada last Wednesday.)
