View Full Version : Finding Kindness in the most unusual places

So coming back to the UK I had a 4 hour flight and a 9 1/2 hour flight and if you had told me that during the 4 hour one I would be sitting in the middle of two ladies, one really grumpy (who was in the aisle seat) and tutted and moaned every time I needed to go to the toilet (so I went twice in 4 hours) and the one in the window seat, a fundamental Christian, an ex military wife in her 60's, loves Bush and believes he did exactly the right thing in going to war, I wouldn't have been looking forward to the first trip, to say the least!

Anyway I get on and the first thing the lady in the window seat says is, would I like the window seat, so I declined as it would be two people to climb over when my weak bladder beckons and she tells me a little about her amazing life and what she has been through, this is how I learnt about her political views and even though I don't agree with many of the things she stands for, I can honestly say she is one of the kindest strangers I have ever travelled with, we spent most of the journey with our heads together giggling and whispering about the moody lady to the left of us (who was wearing ear plugs) when the food came round, there was no veggie option it was beef sandwich and a separate salad and she actually said to me that if I would like her salad as well, because I had missed out on half a meal I could do.
Then when we where about to land I had half an hour to get my next connection so she prayed for me to get it (which I did) this is another subject but I do believe in the power of prayer no matter what religion its from.

So thankyou to the kind lady I sat with, I ran off the plane so I wasn't able to say 'goodbye' and I don't remember your name, but I hope the rest of your journey was safe.

Does anyone else have a story of finding kindness in an unlikely place?

anyway, i've received help from those people that on ewould never expect to receive help from. the meanest looking, scariest reputation people ever. i tend to take people as they come, i tend to think well of people until it's proven they don't deserve it. and even then, i'm more prone to give people leeway. i can call people on their shit without actually disliking them. for that reason, the meanest looking people have a tendency to take care of me. it would shock the crap out of people when they showed up to kick my ass (which i knew nothing about) and all the people who'd heard about it were wandering on up and make sure i was okay. i've been stupidly oblivious most of my life, thankfully my happy idiocy has been cute or touching enough to make sure that the right people got my back.

i can't tell you how many times i heard of someone getting my back, even getting in fights, over ME. and i didn't know it for months. i think they liked me bouncing around fat dumb and happy. gang bangers, drug dealers, "sluts," bitches, big scary fuckers, criminals, science nerds, debate wizards, popular chicks. all because i just wanted to hear about their day.

Coincidently I find some of the roughest looking people, to be the kindest.

I'm just glad Sam found a friend for his American flight. They can be hell.

I can't think of it. Really. I'm too busy washing the floor with straight bleach to think properly.
