We know this has been coming for a long time. There have been requests. Let’s just go ahead and do it. To paraphrase Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets, “Take a human being and remove rationality and accountability.”

I’m not talking about actual I.Q. or even level of ignorance. We are looking for the forum member who is most blind to the facts, even when explained in the simplest terms; someone who seems completely incapable of admitting when they are wrong and even becomes hostile and defensive whenever someone points out an error in one of their posts; someone who resorts to mudslinging when the finally realize that they can’t win; someone who not only seems to be incapable of learning, but who seems to be actively avoiding it at all costs and who encourages other to do the same.

Personally, I’m torn on this between Wicked Eyes and Megara (once upon a time I would have said Juiceman3000, but I haven’t been as active on the forums recently and I don’t know what incarnation that character has taken since the last banning, if any).

Oh, and I’d like to nominate myself if anyone decides to put up an award for “most divisive post.” http://www.hipforums.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

Oh, btw, this thread is NOT meant to act as a springboard for people to flame each other, insult or provoke, despite all apearances otherwise. Rather think of it as a sort of intervention. On this thread, we point out to our brethren that they have developed poor critical thinking skills and hope that these nominations will give them some impetus for self-improvement. Nothing would make me happier than to see our wayward brothers and sisters not only take their own blinders off, but also stop trying to get others to put blinders on. That would be an improvement, wouldn't it? Think of this is an act of love, designed to make our forum even better.

Well, yes, it's pretty much a given that fundamentalist Christians (or "Bible thumpers" as they are more commonly known) are, by training since early childhood, resistant to learning anything which might conflict with their narrow view of the world and they have that really annoying tendency to use the Bible as if it were a concrete and reliable source of information handed down to them by the hand of God, Himself (their God, that is - not to be confused with God as known by the rest of the Christians in the world).

Okay, so they are ignorant by choice and the Christian religion (according to them) is pretty much committed to proselytizing by word or sword until they have first taken over the U.S.A. and turned it into a Christian state, and then, of course, the rest of the world and in so doing, forcing everyone else to wear the same blinders that they do.

They certainly have a tendency to "fit the profile" listed above, but only if you take their smug certainty that they are correct and everyone else is going to hell as a form of mudslinging. However, I think you really shouldn't just group them all together as "The Biggest Idiot."

In my experience, the majority of fundamentalist Christians are happy enough in their blanket of ignorance and don't go out of their way to be rude to those who disagree with them. They simply take solace that such people will burn for eternity and leave it at that (something I really don't have a problem with). I really think that everyone has a right to their religion, no matter what I think of it, personally.

So I'm sorry, but you have to pick just one (the biggest, most obnoxious one of the bunch, I would assume).

Yes, it's very interesting, but off topic. I'm researching bandit, tallying those statement which contain mudslinging, trying to quantify the level of hostility (not easy - there is so much hostility on these forums, even from the best of minds - so I have to limit myself to hostility shown only when they are confronted by a piece of information which put's their thesis in jeopardy), etc. I'll have to compare him to everyone else who gets nominated before I can announce a "winner." I'll let the nominations go on for a week or so, just to get everyones input, then I'll post my findings for every candidate and we will have our official "Hip Forum Idiot." Although I doubt that they will advertize the fact in their sig.

Still working on bandit28, it's getting complicated. Did you know that bandit28 posts almost exclusively in the christianity forum? I'm looking around and I think this person may have 2 or even 3 other identities going at the same time, posting in different threads. That always strikes me as kind of shifty and usually denotes the presence of an agenda, as opposed to a sense of community spirit. What's more, I think I recognize a pattern in the way he builds his arguments. I've seen this before...


As for his chance of being crowned "the biggest idiot," well, if I sucessfully connect him to the other identities I'm looking at, I intend to add all of them together (including past identitys which have been banned). There is the potential that bandit28 may be one of the truely great grand-daddy idiots of all time, however the posts from this particular identity (the ones I've read so far, that is) seem kind of tame, but this is a young incarnation and if true to form we may see some real fireworks in the next few weeks from this one.

But then again, I could be completely off base. It's still too early to really tell, and this one might take a while, so I'll take a break and look at Fractual.

You know, it would help if the person doing the nominating could also list a few posts showing "the candidate" being an idiot. It would make this work a lot easier for me. Thanks.

Umm, I think I need further wording. I'm just goin' through random Fractual_ posts (especially comparing the threads you post on, as well - makes the going a bit faster since I can only assume you have had to deal with this alleged idiocy, yourself) and I'm not seeing it. He's a silly person, sometimes, but I have yet to see actual idiocy of the first order.

There's already stiff competition. Right now it doesn't look like Fractual_ could make even the quarterfinals in the Idiocy All-around competition (and there aren't even enough nominees to have a quarterfinal - so that's really saying something). Alright, I've checked out many more of peacefuljeffrey's posts and I find that most of his posts are typical "member of the community" posts. Less that 1 post in 6 contains what I would term "real idiocy."

He seems to be getting the majority of his news from FOX, which may have warped him somewhat and he's resistant to anti-Bush/anti-war arguments, regardless of their veracity or the soundness of their reasoning, but he doesn't seem to be going out of his way to be an idiot (FOX sometimes has that effect on the untrained mnd).

His posts on other subjects may be a bit out there, occasionally, but it looks like he's at least making an effort to maintain an open mind on non-political subjects. I've not seen any racist epithets nor any overt homophobia. He isn't citing bad sources in his arguments, or trying to get others to stop thinking.

He might make it into the final round, but I doubt he'll medal. If his sponsors would like to post (or preferably IM me) with a list of posts where he is being an idiot, I may have missed something important and I'm willing to take a second look, but his chances don't look good at this time.

Just to clarify, if my research shows a candidate who is deliberately ignorant in one area (say, politics) being congenial and open-minded in other "sensitive" areas, I'm afraid that will hurt his standing in the overall competition.

There are a few candidates who seem far more devoted to being idiots. Either they have specialized and limited all of their posting to areas where their idiocy can really shine, or they tend to be combative across the board.

Perhaps I should expand my awards to include individual events: sexuality; politics; religion; etc. If I did that , then candidates like peacefulljeffrey (wow, that really is a misnomer, isn't it?) might still be able to remain in contention to medal even if they cant make it in the all-around.

What do you think?

As for obvious fakes, I'm just adding all the identities together to total their final scores. Having more than one identity is not, in and of itself, idiotic. It's what they do with their identities that tells the tale.

One interesting thing about having multiple identities as a candidate in this competition, though, is that I can't in good concience let seeming open-mindedness and congeniality in one personality carry over into another personality, which means that they can't be penalized in their standings (as peacefulljeffrey has been) for showing intelligence elsewhere in the community.


The fact that a separate personality had to be created as a mouthpiece for said candidates idiocy actually gives the mouthpice identity precedence over the others. I call this the "difficulty bonus" for the idiocy score, because it's more work.

The public news media has F.A.I.R.(Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting) to act as a watchdog so that they don't get away with pushing bad info or faulty reasoning. No one appointed the people who publish F.A.I.R. and they are not perfect. Despite this, they do a great job and are respected for their efforts. Free speech is the only right they need to do this work. Ditto for myself.

Think of this thread as a similar watchdog for the Hip Forums. No one appointed me, true. I'm not perfect, true. But I'm a good researcher and my analysis of each candidate will be as honest and fair as I can make it.

Believe what you wish. If you want to search through my old posts for evidence to discredit my analysis, feel free.

Ultimately I'm doing this simply to promote stronger critical thinking skills among those who engage in debates on sensitive issues here in the forums. I'd like to get people to stop and really think through their arguments before posting; to make it a habit to research and check their sources before posting "facts" to prove their points; and to check the ever growing spread of disinformation tactics which have become such a huge part of what we are seeing being passed of as factual reporting or research all over the net. I can't watch the whole internet, but this is MY community, I love it here, and I want to do my part to make it the best it can be.

People will be able to check this thread and know immediately that if the person they are debating/arguing with is an award winner, then they need to double check everything that person posts, so they won't be misled.

oh, thank god. i was afraid i was nominated.Who would nominate you? And if you were nominated, it would be a nightmare trying to research it. For one thing, you make well over 20 posts a day. That makes it really hard for me to go back and research all of your posts. The ones which aren't just conversational show you have pretty good reasoning skills (the porn/boobs thread for instance – your David example is evidence of great critical thinking skills). No, anyone would be a fool to nominate you.

I have enough decent candidates, now to award a gold, silver and bronze, but that's where the field ends. It doesn't seem right to give the awards with so little competition. Next week, if no one else gets sponsored, I may have no choice. But after that, I think I'll just do my own research and nominations and we'll have a bi-weekly idiot here in our little hippie village. Just one award every two weeks, though, this medal stuff is great every four years or so, but it's thankless and exhausting work.

Monday I'll post results for the medals. Then I'll give a bi-weekly "village idiot" award from that point on. I enjoy doing this, but not so much that I want to spend all my time online tracking down examples of bad info and faulty reasoning in the forums. Alright, the research is finished and the results are in. Of those nominated for “Biggest Idiot,” I was able to narrow the field to four major contenders: peacefuljeffrey, The_Mad_Buster, bandit28, and Rockstock2004.

peacefuljeffrey: Numerous examples of pettiness (passing judgment for spelling errors or lifestyle differences); provocative grand over-generalizations (grouping people with statements such as “you people”); Fallacious statements (especially in the “I know you are but what am I?” category); mudslinging; common use of undocumented sources as “evidence”; combative goading sans point (fighting words for no reason); “calling the kettle black”; intentional ignorance of bald facts; use of spurious sites to back up arguments; outright bad info

The_Mad_Buster spews hatred in all directions, but has no pretensions about trying to convince others that he is right, he simply doesn’t care. This is the biggest troll nominated and it is on his extraordinary talent at infuriating others (thus making it harder for them to remain cool enough to present a strong and rational argument – which seems to be the great talent and purpose of trolls), and his complete unwillingness (or inability) to process information by which I can judge him in this competition. That, however, is considerable.

Rockstock2004: normally the type of egotistical drivel which this person posts wouldn’t put him in competition. Many people who post here have big egos (myself included). Being argumentative over extremely shallow points (who’s better looking, etc.) isn’t grounds for “idiot” competition because it’s an aesthetic concern (a matter of opinion) which can’t be solved by rational argument. However, I’m forced to give bonus points for poor reasoning skills presented right in the idiot thread – 7 of 8 statements being fallacious statements toward the argument, and the 8th statement being unsupported. In the second argument, concerning who has a life, I find no evidence to support the claim of tencent not having one; only opinion. Evidence presented of personal life irrelevant by hip-net standards.

Of the other nominees, I find that there isn’t enough evidence of actual idiocy as defined at the beginning of this thread, for me to consider them seriously. Only OSF had any real possibility to be considered, and that largely due to the types of discussions he engaged in (exactly the type I am attempting to keep an eye on). However, OSF is argumentative and isn’t always right, but his arguments are relatively well constructed. I can flow chart his attempts at reasoning and I must conclude that he is at least trying to be a rational and intelligent contributor to discussion (regardless of whether I agree with him or not).

So, having given this a great deal of careful consideration, I am proud to announce the medalists in our competition:

The Bronze Medal goes to bandit28 [bandit28 seemed congenial enough and confined his work to a single arena, the Christianity forum, which worked against him in the overall, however his repeated attempts to convince those he engaged in discussion with to lay aside all other sources of information in favor of his single most favored and least verifiable source finally got him into the medals]

The Silver Medal goes to peacefuljeffrey [peacefuljeffrey was something of a surprise as so many of his posts were completely non-combative, however his pettiness concerning the opinions of those he engaged in discussion with eventually turned the trick for him, edging out even the nominated fundamentalist to win the silver]

The Gold Medal goes to The_Mad_Buster [winning by a large margin, his performance is a credit to trolls everywhere]

The Olympic Committee has flatly refused to rescore an event once the judges scores are in, even if a mistake has been made. I am NOT a member of the Olympic Committee, though. As a judge of this competition (actually, THE judge, this is not a popular vote), I would am ill disposed to change my call as that would set a bad precedent.

HOWEVER, I will allow you to make an appeal to bandit28 to voluntarily give up his medal so it may be awarded to Rockstock2004. If bandit28 will submit to this thread a written statement renouncing his bronze medal, I will then award it to Rockstock2004. That's as fair a call as I can make under the circumstances. The other medals will not be considered in this case, since that would involve numerous trading of medals. Bronze is the only medal that can be contested in this manner.

NOTE: I cannot in good conscience allow the future "village idiot" awards to be contested or given up in the same manner. They are single awards and I intend to stand firm by my call in those awards.

Well, yes, it's pretty much a given that fundamentalist Christians (or "Bible thumpers" as they are more commonly known) are, by training since early childhood, resistant to learning anything which might conflict with their narrow view of the world and they have that really annoying tendency to use the Bible as if it were a concrete and reliable source of information handed down to them by the hand of God, Himself (their God, that is - not to be confused with God as known by the rest of the Christians in the world).

Okay, so they are ignorant by choice and the Christian religion (according to them) is pretty much committed to proselytizing by word or sword until they have first taken over the U.S.A. and turned it into a Christian state, and then, of course, the rest of the world and in so doing, forcing everyone else to wear the same blinders that they do.

They certainly have a tendency to "fit the profile" listed above, but only if you take their smug certainty that they are correct and everyone else is going to hell as a form of mudslinging. However, I think you really shouldn't just group them all together as "The Biggest Idiot."

In my experience, the majority of fundamentalist Christians are happy enough in their blanket of ignorance and don't go out of their way to be rude to those who disagree with them. They simply take solace that such people will burn for eternity and leave it at that (something I really don't have a problem with). I really think that everyone has a right to their religion, no matter what I think of it, personally.

So I'm sorry, but you have to pick just one (the biggest, most obnoxious one of the bunch, I would assume).

We are looking for the forum member who is most blind to the facts, even when explained in the simplest terms; someone who seems completely incapable of admitting when they are wrong and even becomes hostile and defensive whenever someone points out an error in one of their posts; someone who resorts to mudslinging when the finally realize that they can’t win; someone who not only seems to be incapable of learning, but who seems to be actively avoiding it at all costs and who encourages other to do the same.

Personally, I’m torn on this between Wicked Eyes and Megara (once upon a time I would have said Juiceman3000, but I haven’t been as active on the forums recently and I don’t know what incarnation that character has taken since the last banning, if any).

Oh, btw, this thread is NOT meant to act as a springboard for people to flame each other, insult or provoke, despite all apearances otherwise. Rather think of it as a sort of intervention. On this thread, we point out to our brethren that they have developed poor critical thinking skills and hope that these nominations will give them some impetus for self-improvement. Nothing would make me happier than to see our wayward brothers and sisters not only take their own blinders off, but also stop trying to get others to put blinders on. That would be an improvement, wouldn't it? Think of this is an act of love, designed to make our forum even better.
