what do yal think music will be like in the next few generations? it seems that the only trend in music throughtout history is that it keeps getting more and more outragous and extreme, but i think we have reached a point where its practically a physical and mental impossibility to become more extreme, so whats next?

it seems there is always somthing new being created...like a driving force that speaks to the times....reminding us that change and evolution are the inevitable. ...so its ever onward...forward into the abyss

The only thing I can say about music in the future is that I believe it will grow more and more diverse and diffrent... more people with diffrent tastes will see to that.

My friends and I are always saying Techno will take over the world. I know some kids who like it now, but I for one, hate it.

i dont think electronica will take over like you think, but it will be included more and more into most every genre of music... now we have technology to create new sounds infinately more varied than the few worldy instruments we have... which can infinately create new hybrids or what not. electronica in its whole now i see is hardly at all as varied as rock has become within 50 years, yet it has much more potential to

I see computerized "music" especially designed to appeal the brain, then later, devices capable of tapping into your wants to generate the perfect tunes,,, for you.

I just hope I'll be hermitized or the like by then.

Well I personally think that rock n roll will have a major resurgence coming up, especially psychedelic classic rock stuff. There are already bands like Jet and The White Stripes doing stuff sort of in that direction, but I think it will increase alot more pretty soon. And I also think that more people my age are listening to the older stuff, so it should be pretty popular.

As far as extremeness, that just depends on the culture. If we suddenly get more conservative or change our taboos, the new music will either grow more conservative (while still pushing the boundary) or will focus on the new taboos.

Electronica will grow in popularity, but won't take over because people like variety, plus, not every high schooler can go buy all that equipment like they can buy a guitar.

I think the biggest change will be more global music. India especially, since they are becoming more active on the world stage, will start introducing their style into the mix (which I think is great), maybe African beats will get popular, who knows? I think it will be a global thing though.

I also think that if our political climate doesn't change (i don't just mean Bush, but our situation in the world at large), music will become more politically charged, like in the 60's.

Most of their music (Europop) has a heavy influence of those genres.I love Europop and dance, and trance. But I can't stand Techno XO.

Anyways, you know the saying: " Fads go in a cycle" ? I believe this is true in music too. In 10 years or so everybody will be listening to classic rock ( and make new variants themselves.
^^^^I agree with Dan up there.^^^^
But I DOUBT the music can get anymore extreme.(That's just unimaginable! O.O)
Anyways, great topic, I always wonder about this stuff too.

I don't know about the new kinds, but i'll always love Rock and Drum&Bass. There is a lot of trance fans in my country amd that number is getting bigger every day. And that music is destructive...

I think the future of music is in the indie scene... some good stuff still comes out on the "major" labels, and will continue to do so... but people who are connoisseurs with their music (as most musicians are) recognize that a higher quality of music comes out on the smaller labels (ie: matador). I look forward to more creative and encompassing approaches to music... something like a private community such as David Lynch has created, but in a more music orientated sense.

As far as music itself... it will continue progressing in multiple directions. I'm continually surprised by people that say they're all about pink floyd, a group that was often criticized of being slaves to electronics. Radiohead is the other group that epitomizes peoples bias, imo... there's so much electronic manipulation going on in their music, it's shocking.

listen 10,000 years from now and what do you hear ! what seems to change most broadly over time is the intention , of what music is for . when there is no more war music will change . funny , we could probably just go ahead and play this music now because Time can do that . think if you will of the wheel turning as revo .

I don't even listen to today's music cuz it's so stupid. I'm staying in the 60's and 70's....no music is stupid. only listeners! find what makes the artist (or producer, or fans) like the music and like it for that! or stick to an opinion. no offense meant. the 60s and 70s produced some badass rock! hoorah for that.

my fear for the future is that live music will die. thank goodness that's far away because live music seems to be as strong as ever here in the US.
in terms of instrumentation, i think midi instruments and synths will take over. if i could afford a midi guitar and an awesome rig...oh the possibilities. i would love to see the next big thing be a groups of 5+ live synth players playing drums, bass, horns, guitars, pianos, samples and loops in a gigantic jam format. synth army!

gar , music is by intention and musicians will come to accept mistakes and nonsense as intentional if at least the intention is to make music . by this we play the music of the future NOW as new and still yet to be ! we play with time as art .

if we're talking about in the next 15-30 years, i think "indie" rock, techno, and computerized music will become much more powerful, as computers will take more effect on our lives. hip hop will still be around, but in different forms... it will have gone through it's "hair metal" stage and become just another genre... classical and jazz will become much less popular, as more computerized instruments and playing machines will develop (i.e. robotic instrumentalists? not a far-off thought). and the creative thought process of music, i feel is detiorating with today's pop music. but with that same trend, the need for more original music, that's why i think indoe rock will get bigger (just look at bands like the killers, death cab, modest mouse, franz, etc..).

just one analysis...

The future of music will not only be sound waves, but also body waves. There will be nano plug-ins that tap into nerves all over your body. The body waves will be transmitted through the plug-ins, and into the nerves. This will allow you hear, as well as feel every piece of the music. Imagine your favorite song pulsing through your body while you listen to it!

SoLoMaN
12-20-2004, 05:27 AM
Wow, and imagine being able to alter every sensory perception in your head; and not stop someone else from doing the same!

Nanotechnology shouldn't be encouraged, or disrespected anyhoot! I'd love the kind of thing you describe, i've read a book all about it, but that kind of force comes with a price. Start making friends with your local computer genius, he may need to hack your head and turn off the "eat more Maccy D's" robots in the near future.

Oh, and i think the music of the future will be a mix of recycled styles and influences from this and our past generations and genres, innovation built upon existing styles but refreshed/revamped and restylised through the wonders of technology that doesn't require a direct link the head, and hopefully a lot more open free from marketing, lots more of it being played live.

Stop asking for walkman, get a bongo and get scowls from old people.

yes. good points. lots of stuff would be music if people would just appreciate it. listeners have to advance as far as musicians do. foster creativity in youth. too bad we "educate" them instead.

the passion of free music speaks to all , and it must be free to be one second into the future . in this kind of time we are all equal in our existence feeling . i think maybe it can't be recorded . there is a sound in it ... well , it's a sound that is heard but free in space like it's floating . sometimes with a bit of searching i can find the musician most responsible for it . it's got a funny reality ...

I kind of like the Low-fi "collage" type music I hear at alternative arts centers. Sort of a mix of sound objects and music. Sometimes it has some technological aspects, but not computerized. I also liked the D@S movement in the 90's. I think some hodge-podge of musical collage, and free jazz with the melody, subtledy and song structure of D@S would be wonderful. I'm sure poeple are already doing it, I just haven't been up on my music lately.

Did any of that make sense?

I can enjoy rap occasioally, esp for dancing, but God, I love Hendrix! My hope for music in the future is that rock comes back, although its never been away for me. I really hop some people with good messages in their music get popular too. The world needs it. When I'm really mellow, I love CArole King and Bob Marley. (although, commercially, he is kind of popular) I think we also need some war protest songs. Whats this generations problem? Of course, I AM preeching to the choir since you all are here. But really! I think that people don't care enough anymore to have real "lessons" or messages or anything in music. We're satisied with "I smoke/ I drank/ I supposed to stop but I can't/ I'm a dog/ I love to fuck/ And I'm addicted to money/ Cause it costs/ Do it Big Big!" REally. I don't knnow! I miean that song is entertaining, but so is Hendrix! Bring Rock back

to be fair rock and protest songs are still around, bands like System of a down have been doing them their whole career. all I hope for is the death of rap and pop-punk. as for the future I agree that world music will play more of a part but that's already happening too, in metal bands like Nightwish and Lacuna Coil have incorporated their countries heritage into very heavy rock with beatiful female vocals. I also see electronics becoming a more established force in music with numeric and binaural tones which stimulate deep centers in the mind while meaning is conveyed through the lyrics. I would really love to see improvements in lyric writing, something more poetic than most of whats out today. I love the lyrics of Cradle of filth. inspired by Byron and Nietzsche with operatic and dirge themes. but thats just me

We're already getting to the point where both parents and their kids have grown up with rap. yeah that's a good point. when there's a well established status quo, something big and new can break away. the 60s through mid 80s saw a lot of experimentation. it seems like no new movements have come along since then. hip hop met pop, and now we're stuck. just my opinions.

I could write thousands of words in response to all this but ill keep it short instead;

Im sick of people wanting rebirths of musical styles. rock and roll was good, great, but its been done. it is an established style. the musicians who pioneered it created the style. If we go back on the style, all musicians will be doing is writing music to a certain style. I respect some techno artist who is at teh forefront of his culture and muscal type, than some rock revival band like Jet, who have punchy songs but who in the end are jsut rrecycling the work of other people. I think the sound of a band and of music is one of the main thigns that seperates differnet levels of musicians. It doesnt mean i listen to all the new crap thats coming out, but i still respect new alternative artists who are making new sounds. The problems stems from LABELLING. alternative music was once almost all music. all music was once new and fresh. now, you have alternative music, or established genres. or, everything is classed very specifically.

I think musicians should be constantly trying to find new sounds and ways to express themselves.

I think the ultimate future music, similar to the idea propose at the start, will be sounds ans audio waves that simply generate feelings inside you. sounds and rythms that are constructed precisely to evoke emotion. that is the logical direction. the world is getting lazier, music is getting more to do with emotion and angst and stuff, and the forefront of music is technology, electronic music, programmed music.

But also notice how electronica and all that stuff has influenced the use of ecstacy, just like 80's music influenced stimulant use, and the 60's influenced psychedelics, maybe drugs will play a part in future music scenes too, that should be considered

Is that possible? I never thought about it, and don't know much about music (in the technical sense), but it seems like the scale is sorta standard, like red green and blue are standard primary colors. But if we COULD shift away from it, it'd be amazing (or really horrible sounding...haha).

I love the lyrics of Cradle of filth. inspired by Byron and Nietzsche with operatic and dirge themes. but thats just me
Cradle of Filth's lyrics are quite brilliant indeed. Poetic, mystical, graceful and yet extremely tongue-in-cheek. Their songs are saturated with double meanings. In fact, most of it is just about sex, even when it doesn't seem to be.

Dusk and her embrace from 1996 is their best album IMO. Great songwritership, dripping with atmosphere. They defininitely lost their magic with Midian for me. I like the album but there's something amiss, and stayed amiss until today.

Maybe it's because Dani has turned from ultra cute to ultra ugly. :O

But enough about that. I think that just like in all aspects of life, the computer will play a bigger and bigger role and we'll quite possibly end up totally dependent on it music-wise as well. Music will be composed, recorded, produced and distributed comletely computerisedly. I think. But let's hope I'm wrong.

My theory: if Peak Oil doesn't happen (or at least is a gentle-ish transition) then we may remain on a computerized music course of musical evolution. However, if it is a devestating change and we regress to a dark ages sort of lifestyle, prepare for much simpler music, mostly folk music sort of stuff: guitar, fiddle, banjo, woodwinds, lots of drums still, that sort of thing. No more crappy pop music either, the music will be simpler and more "true" in it's feeling. And thank god, there will be no synthesizers!

well, the scale is based on a ratio. this ratio, when applied to a value and done so again 12 times will return to its original note, jut an octave higher/;ower)

but also, each note can be expressed as a fraction with an integer denominator.

im sure another ratio could be derived by maths

i'm pretty excited for Peak Oil...the worst thing that can happen is i starve to death...i'm not afraid (tripped enough...lol). No, the worst thing that could happen (in my mind) would be to watch much of what you once loved disappear, watch (or at least know about) your friends and family dying, either by starvation, dehydration, disease, or violent attack by mobs, and then dying yourself.

By the way, Bill...you may as well be speaking Greek in your last post, for all I understood it. I never got all that stuff about octaves and notes and stuff.
