Yesterday I bought a 1976 Chevy Bluebird and she drives like a dream. The bus movie has started already, I can't find anyone to insure it. I tried the big companies and they all refused to offer me any insurance. I'm going to try the small local guys next.
Anybody know an insurance company that will cover an old bus?

if first you insure just any old car , they'll let you add the bus to the policy .

I got insurance and titled her in my name. Next comes the dreaded emissions test...
There's three snapshots that I got from the previous owner in my gallery, more pics to come soon.

I use Poulos up here in VT. Was very cheap to insure bus. Didn't need to have another vechile on the road to do it as well. Big Big Big thing is when you talk to the ins companies DO NOT tell them it is a bus. it is a RV or mobile home, you will have much more luck. peace.

Try Progressive. Tell them you'll be a "full-timer".

progressive is cheap but they have the converted school bus clause (like most insurance companies)...a lot of times the agents don't even know the clause is there but wreck a bus with a crew of folks on it & you'll learn about the clause pretty quick...JuJu sure did (progessive paid the first couple of claims, then canceled the policy & took JuJu to court, saying that he didn't tell the agent that it was a converted school bus when he had, he even bragged about the conversions)
but that didn't stop us from using progressive for our last road bus...couldn't find any insurance without the clause & Progessive was the cheapest for RV insurance

Yeah, I went with Progressive already. They were cheap and didn't care that my vehicle is a bus. If I ever try to make a claim then things might change, but for now I'm legal. Also, I passed my emissions test, which is pretty strict in Boulder County.
I've been living aboard for three days now and it is awesome. Yesterday I bought a deep cycle so I have lights and fans and tunes. My three way refer is humming along nicely, too. I can't believe I didn't do this years ago. However it is not all perfect, a bus movie is a bus movie afterall. The first night I parked, legally, on the street by a park and got tagged as an abandoned vehicle. I called the police and straightened it out OK. It's funny having a bus because some people think it is awesome and some people think it is horrible. When I'm driving around, some people wave and some people glare. When I'm parked, some people want to talk to me and are super friendly and some people actually point and make rude comments.

If you paid less than 4000 dollars for it then who cares about insurance.

Gotta have insurance if one expects to drive their bus for long...and if one expects to be free & not have to pay the ransom fee for driving without insurance
luckily Rocky is covered now

Well, sure. The liability end of it. But ANYONE will give you liability insurance.
hippiestead

Not legal insurance for a converted school bus....almost all liability policies have a clause that says that the policy will not cover converted school busses...but if you don't point that out to the agent & you claim to have an RV (having your title changed to read RV is one way to protect you rights as far as search and seizure...or it was before 9-11) the agent will usually sell you a liability policy anyway. It'll work to keep your vehicle on the road but it won't help at all if you wind up in a major accident.

i picked up my first bus this year, luckily the previous owner had gotten it switched over from commercial to 'moho' (RV) designation years ago, so it transferred over to me that way without me having to do anything special.
felt kinda bad for the guy though, seems the newer bus he was moving over to (i got his old one) hadn't been switched on the registration yet, and since he had done the procedure last time the rules had changed! i guess now he had to fill out all these forms, fees, certifications by 3rd parties about the rv conversion being complete, etc., because he had to roll with the more expensive insurance till he could get it cleared up.
wasn't all too bad, as he only need to buy the insurance 3 days at a time since he knew where he was going.
i still haven't insured mine for the road, because it is where it be.

veggie oil is your friend!!!veggie oil isn't as good for the environment as some people think. veggie oil still releases carbon when burnt. i have mixed feelings about this.

veggie oil isn't as good for the environment as some people think. veggie oil still releases carbon when burnt. i have mixed feelings about this.maybe so, but its free(not including tax). free is my friend. and also its recycled, meaning less possessing, less oil grubbing, less rich Texans, less mining, and less support for giant corporation. its a win every way i can see it.

yeah im having a hell of a time getting my bus titled as an RV, but i had no problem insuring it as one. the insurance only costs $100 a year. i was really relieved when i heard that.
it is currently titled as a bus, which is ok, but i cant find anyone to inspect it as a bus... i found someone to inspect it as an RV, but i cant find anyone to title it as an RV... i just got to keep trying. tomorrow feels like my lucky day.
