Nothing is closer to us than our thoughts, our inner self. What is consciousness and its connection to our brains? Do we have a soul, and if we do, how is it related to our brains and consciousness? Can mind and the soul exist apart from the physical brain?

Conciousness is the awareness of the current manifestation
of physical matter we are experiencing.
It is of the mind which is riddled with delusion, attachment,
desire, suffering, pleasure, and other products of the ego.
The mind is connected to the entire body, and conciousness
is connected to the mind, which is connected with Universal
Conciousness.
The Soul, or the higher Self (Namaste!) is our divine essence
which is connected to God.
It is not contained to the body, or even conciousness, yet
most of us are so delusional that we perceive the body and mind
to be our essence, and have lost contact with the Self.
The Self can be discovered through mediation and through
attaining Christ Conciousness, and we can search backwards to
our source which is an emanation from God's essence.
Mind can not exist without a physical host, but the Self (soul)
existed before our body and will continue to exist after we
change bodies, or acheive liberation (Kindgom of Heaven) :)
