Ok. I dont' have money to buy anything but I have several books I haven't read yet around the flat. So, what should I read?
I know this is silly, but I can never make up my mind what to read next, and I have only 4 pages till I finish the book I've been reading.
Sometimes I just have my hubby grab a book blindly for me to decide; but I figured I'd ask you lot this time.
Since I have 11 books, I'll eliminate one of them and make a poll.
:)
The book I'm eliminating is Tom Clancy's Op-Centre "Games of State"
(can't say I'm in a Clancy mood)
whatever you lot vote on I'll start reading next. And it will help me whittle my way down my ever growing un-read books list.
Thanks in advance for your help making up my mind. ;)

I would certainly recommend something by Chuck Palahniuk. Preferably Invisible Monsters or Fight Club.
The Acid House was a good movie, but I have never read the book. Go for it.

I have a bootlegged version of the movie as it wasn't for sale in the States. Loved it though! I really like Irvine Welsh, he's dark and gritty! :) In fact, I had to buy my copy of "Trainspotting" (the book) up in Canada as I couldn't get that in the States at the time either. :(

Ouch, you can't get any decent books in the US. Too many fundie Christian bigots going around burning and banning books. irvine welsh is a great writer. Go for the acid house.
And get Porno while you're at it.

Already read Porno. :) I own that one. Twas brilliant. And we can get decent books, just couldn't get that for whatever reason. Won't disagree though about too many fundie Christian bigots though. ;)
I also have Ecstacy. ... um, the book.

Thanks for the recommendation, Nay. :)
This was really a silly thread wasn't it? But I'm getting recommendations to new things, and ultimately that's what I'm looking for. Been stuck in a bit of a rut author-wise I feel.
I was leaning towards the Irvine Welsh books myself. Though I was tempted by Rankin as I've never read him before. :)
Acid House is also short stories, so essentially a 3 in 1 book.

Aye, I found the Acid House lying in the street and picked it up, but have yet to read it. I will, but I got about 30 books that I have got to read. Just finishing off The Godfather at the moment.
If you ever check out Jeff Noon, don't be frightened about anything not making sense at first...that's just the way he writes. Everything becomes clearer the further on you read. Plus, he's a brilliant metaphorical writer...his sentences are like songs. Beautiful!

I take it there's no particular order with which to tackle his books?
Somewhere else I was recommend Niall Griffths (sp?) have you ever heard of him? Was told he's like Irvine Welsh but better written. Also told you should read his works in order written if possible, as the later ones reference all ones previous.

If you like reading Clancy now and then, look out for Gerald Seymour next time you're browsing the second-hand book stall. He's a former journalist who writes well-informed, compulsively readable thrillers set in hotspots like Afghanistan, Iran, South Africa etc, usually centred on disaffected loners working for some branch of the UK security state. Unlike Clancy however he doesn't go in for jingoistic tub-thumping. He's still best known for one of his earlier novels Harry's Game, about a British agent trying to infiltrate the IRA in Belfast - it was made into an excellent TV movie with a soundtrack by Clannad.

oops ... i was wrong.
Acid House is all short stories, but as I'd only seen the movie (which covers 3 short stories) I was assuming that the book would only have 3.
In fact, it has 21, and a short novella. :) Already read the first 2 stories. Both were excellent and great "surprise" endings.

Yeah, I've heard of him, but never read any as of yet!
As for Jeff Noon, there's not really any order, although I suggest you read Vurt before you read Pollen as those two are closely related. But you'll find that every single one of his books are related to each other in one way or another. :)
Oh...and on the subject of short stories...Pixel Juice (Also Jeff Noon) is a book of 50 short stories.

Would have just bought it outright, but I figure they put the 'offer' button there so I'd try to barter a bit. It looks really interesting and differeng to anything I've ever read before. Was described as a bit cyber-punk? Have seen cyber-punk movies but never read any fiction.
