I rarely ever buy books anymore due to the fact that I can't get them so cheap! However, I do have a £5 Waterstones voucher that needs spending... but you can't get anything decent for under a fiver. I do want a new Japanese dictionary though...

The wasp factory - Iain banks

Enjoy The Wasp Factory. :) I was expecting a more gruesome tale honestly. I dunno, maybe i'm just jaded.
The last books I bought I actually got at the boot sale several weeks ago (might even be a month) I can't remember the exact one(s) I purchased last, but that day for about £2 I got: The Wasp Factory & Whit by Iain Banks, Memoirs of a Geisha by Robert Golden, A couple of Tom Clancy's - Covert Ops books, a book by Robert Ludlum, and The Beach by Alex Garland.
I've only read The Wasp Factory and Memoirs of a Geisha so far.

Oh that's the book I was supposed to pick up 'The beach'. Thanks for reminding me. The wasp factory wasn't gruesome enough? Yes I think you must be slightly jaded! Saying that i thought 'Needful things' by King was pretty gross so I'm pretty much a wimp when it comes to books, I obviously need to broaden my horizons :)

It wasn't a "gruesome enough" factor, I just didn't find it to be the "horror" book that the snippet reviews that were all over the back and took up two pages of the beginning of the book made it out to be. By the way that all sounded I was sure I'd be having nightmares. But well, to me, twas less shocking then say a paragraph or two of Kay Scarpetta discussing an autopsy she's performing in a Patricia Cornwell book.
Not saying I didn't bear a thought to the little bunnies - as i do have a fondness for bunnies to begin with ... but well, it just didn't hit that "shock/horror" value in my mind. Twas very interesting with many twists and leaves you constantly wondering what sadistic turn will happen next, but just didn't creep me out and make me want to sleep with the lights all on.
the wasp factory was good-ish until the end
the ending twist was crap, didn't make much sense, and made the whole story illegitimate (PM me for details on what I mean, don't wanna spoil anything)
last book I bought was either Batman: Year One by Frank Miller if graphic novels count
or my favorite book ever The Wanting Seed by Anthony Burgess
phoenix_indigo
05-24-2007, 10:44 AM
in my opinion graphic novels always count :)
the twist didn't bother me. i didn't see it as making the rest of the story illegitimate at all. in fact, i think it stood to add explanation to the twisted sordid tale from the beginning. then again, i went into the book knowing there was going to be a "surprise" of sorts from the Surprises (http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=231016&page=1) thread from the book club.
Hmmm ... because of the twist and for those that are in process of reading or haven't read it yet ... i'm going to suggest if you want to discuss this further (so we can go into more detail) come over to the new thread i'm starting about "The Wasp Factory" (http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3456324#post3456324) and then all will be revealed. :)

Lanky have you read any othere Iain Banks books? have any you recommend?
I have read nearly every book known to man. Do you want to know what is the worst book of all time is?
The 1990 edition Road Atlas of Cardiff.
Last book I bought was: Harry Potter and the Half blood prince. Apparently the young Harry(everyone dances around him in this one) picks up an old copy of some potions book. But some ex student, the ex prince wrote a few formulas. Harry is now cheating through this year at Hogwarts. Although I haven't quiet finished it, I must say, Harry seems quite bored with Hogwarts. seven years in a crazy castle- if you want my opinion, I reckon they all cheated.

it is amazing. It's like one of the most amazing things i've ever read. Garth Ennis is amazing. There making it into a series (which will work out much better than a movie) on HBO here in the states. i don't know where they'll air it in england though. Ennis said he has written some new material for it. I'm almost done with the series and I'm very impressed. I didn't think comics could be so deep, yet entertaining.
