View Full Version : Ry's Karma: "But why do you want to be like those white people?"

Hows it goin guys / gals... I've kind of been a drifter on the Hip Forums, but i've kinda got to like this place, so decided to make it my home - at least for a bit.

Welcome to my Karma.

I dont know why, but I have to admit - I quite like the idea of detailing random stuff about my life to a bunch of complete strangers. In some ways I just wana get things off my chest. At the same time I s'pose I'm interested in knowing what people really think - so feedback I s'pose!

Now I reckon 99% of you clicked on this thread coz of its controversial(ish) title. The other 1% didn't realise they clicked on it. But let me explain. First a little about myself.

I'm 23 and from London Sidez. Whats more I'm an Iranian Prince (Of a sort) which means society had two expectations of me. 1) I'd grow up to be either a doctor, lawyer or engineer (or anything else that can roughly fit into this category. E.G a Business Consultant for example would be adequate, as they use computers, and computers are engineered, therefore I'd be an Engineer). 2) I'd need to get married and start a family with a girl of Royal Blood as soon as I graduate.

So the thread title: I've always been a free thinker and wanted to do my own thing. I gotta admit, I've defo never been 'hippy inclined' (Not too sure what that exactly means) but I've defo never been Persian Royalty inclined either. The Thread title was a common saying to me as a kid from my Father and Mother, Uncles and Aunties, and anyone remotely older than me lol. I assure you however, that it was in no way intended as racist. It was just something that they used to prevent me doing 'white' things according to persian blood: Smoking, Drinking, Gambling, Shaggin Around... Smoking (again)'. I gotta admit if thats the definition then Im basically white now <Ry takes a pull of his cigerette>.

I like bein persian, I love my family, I love having a royalty title. Thats the honest truth. So is the following: I hate being told what to do - I hate having to do things because its expected of me. I wanna smoke and Hell I dont wanna get married (at least yet!)

So just a little about me:
23, From london sidez but went to University in Leeds (Leeds Uni). Midway through that I moved to Portsmouth to work for IBM for a year, after which I was back in Leeds. Now I'm in Newcastle doin a masters in Business & International Management. And looking for a job!

I'm a free thinker - I'm a deep thinker - I'm damn creative in my thoughts. So much so infact that I've wanted to write a book - but I've always had writers block. Writing this paragraph has even taken me 10 minutes and numerous times or keeping my finger on the delete key!

I'm a remix Artist. I love RnB / Hip Hop n Rap, but im finding Radio 1 type stuff appealing to me more n more - so pretty eclectic! check out a few of em: http://www.youtube.com/user/Rayan83 (http://users.youtube.com/rayan83)

I'm a good guy - and without sounding arrogant I know I am. I always kinda look out for others n make the effort to make sure I dont hurt anyone. At the same time, I can take the piss and have jokes with most ppl. Sarcasm rocks! hehe. I got loads of mates rom up n down the UK and like to go clubbin now and again! Aint got an other half at the moment - but who knows wots around the corner eh? ;o) My last GF and I were pretty serious until it all went tits up. Kinda enjoyin bein single but its running thin. Ah wells ;o)

Anywayz, thats me and probably the longest post I've ever done.... ever!

Feedback would be great, will post again

Laterz!

Ry

Hey Crucifieddreams - I just finished reading your karma - which made me wanna start this one!

Being an iranian prince really isn't that much of a big deal in the western world as it is in the MidEast.
It has its good points but it can really be limiting too. Ceremonies can be a bit gay at times. People end up kissin my hand sometimes which is not only disgusting but uneeded, especially coz they can smell benson & hedges silver. In many ways it doesn't affect my life - but at the same time, I have to fight to do what I want which sometimes upsets my parents.

Its more fun being a student! Tho not at the moment when I've got loads of essays to do. Really shouldn't be dossing on HipForums. But then again, who the hell wants to write an essay about Economic Globalisation!

What's your dream?My Dream -

I want to start my own business that will one day make me rich beyond my wildest dreams. :D

However, I really want to spend a year somewhere in Africa or Palestine and provide hands on help to those who need it. Whilst I'm there I want to document everything that happens everyday - producing a documentary. That would truly be a dream.

I certainly wasn't expecting this - but here we go! hehe. The shah and my Father are paternal 1st cousins. Theres a hell of a lot of bitterness towards A. Khomeini but at the same time, this generation is changing. My views on the issue is one that makes me sound like a rebel in my family but that certainly isn't the case. Although I see where the bitterness towards Khomeini comes from (and DO understand) I still feel that what the world saw back in 1979 Was Truly Democracy taking place. Surely, that is the greater good?

Liberalism & Pro Choice all the way - whether for an individual or for a nation.

Cool picture too. God Bless Palestine!

Cool picture too. God Bless Palestine! An interesting point of view for a relative of the Shah and I definitely agree with you. The 1979 revolution was largely a pro-democracy movement, comprising a diverse range of groups from the secular liberals and leftists to the radical Islamists and supporters of Khomeini. Sadly, following the revolution, Khomeini was adept enough to manoeuver himself into a position of power and stifle the more liberal voices within the revolution. Needless to say, bitterness towards Khomeini is understandable, but it is also entirely understandable to oppose both the Shah and Khomeini. Iran's a wonderful society, rich in culture and history, and there is a strong liberal movement in the country. It is when the West makes its threats against Iran that the conservatives win out. To oppose Bush's hawkish aims is not to support the theocracy, but ultimately to call for the victory of the liberal voices....

You have quite the bio there I must say.

So, a couple of questions...
As you are into music, what musicians inspire you?

And as you are an aspiring writer with permanent writer's block ... what books do you like to read? (ones you don't have to for Uni) are there any particular authors you ultimately turn to over others?

Welcome Rayan,

I'm interested in going to Leeds University, can you tell me a bit about what it's like... the city, the uni etc?
Hey Fountains of Nay

Leeds University has been the most applied to University for a fair few years now - and thats because its one of the biggest, and liveliest universities. Theres over 30,000 students who go to Leeds Uni alone, plus another 20 odd thousand who go to Leeds Metropolitan so that certainly makes it a very student city. The University Campus is massive and very green - and its not often you see a Full campus directly next door to the city centre.

The Union is big - two nightclubs, 5 Bars, loads of shops and again its all on campus. Theres some great services like LS:TV or LSRFM and the Leeds Student Newspaper which are great media and utilised by the students.

Leeds often rates highly on the league tables but it depends on what you want to do.

I personally loves Leeds Uni - The university alone and its opportunities gave me the chance to get involved in so many things, including documentary production, Radio DJ'ing, Loads of Protesting (Leeds University Students Union is VERY Politically charged) and a gazillion other stuff.

The city has loads to do. Theres even a cinema thats open all night (Very small tho!) but that gives you an example of whats available any time of the day.

SU Price of a Beer: £1.70
Standard Student Night Price of a Double Vodka Redbull: £2.50

Best Student places to go: Evolution, Creation, Oceana, Baja, Fruity on Fridays

Also Check out: Sahara Shisha Cafe, Milano's Pizza, Leeds Metropolitan Beckets Park Campus (Damn beautiful campus)

Hope that helps.

Hey Peace-Phoenix

Again, an interesting question!

If i'm completely honest, I'm not religious at all - but at the same time I believe in God, Believe in the Mono-Theistic Religions, and believe that Mohammed (pbuh) was the last prophet, and that Ali was the first caliph. I know enough about religion to know that I believe in this because I truly believe it, not because i was brought up believing it.

Does that Make me muslim on this set of beliefs alone? (Coz thats as far as my muslamicness goes)

Hey Phoenix_Indigo

Thanks for visiting 'But Why do you want to be like those white people?' (hehe)

I do love music - but i must admit i gain more inspiration not from individual artists or musicians - but from genres' in general. I learned the piano as a child and my tutor was an extremely talented musician who played music that would really touch your soul. Classically, thats the sort of thing I've been conditioned to liking.

Music that I take a more active interest in involves remixing and DJing. Again, Genres take more precendence than people - but i still probably couldn't say who! Lame answer to your question, I know!

As for books - I remember the first novel I ever read (by choice) was a Sidney Sheldon Book when I was 11 - and although it was faar too raunchy for my age I enjoyed it! After that, I've always read his books. I'd creep downstairs into my fathers library and steal another book from his Sidney Sheldon collection hehe. I also like Raul Dahl books - I say that because recently I've been wanted to read Georges Marvellous Medicine again. They really should have made that into a movie!!

The majority of books I've read in recent years are autobiographies. Two I would thoroghly recomend are 'Who Says Elephants Can't Dance' by Louis Gerstner, the man who turned around IBM in the 1990's and Duncan Bannatynes Autobiography. At the moment I'm reading Richard Bransons - it really isn't as exciting as I thought it would be - but his house sounds amazing!

Hehehe

They're certainly good Shi'ah credentials. It's always good to meet someone else from a Muslim background, though sometimes I find people have a negative reaction towards me because I never chose to pursue the faith. It's not apostasy, as I was never Muslim to begin with, but still, I think some people might think I'd turned my back on something that's very important to them....

Well, they would be good shiah credentials if I did anything about it. It might sound unfortunate but I dont do anything remotely 'muslim' in actions, or anything else so I cant really call myself a muslim.

I'm very pro-choice - No one should lookdown on you for not being something you dont feel you are. If you did call yourself a muslim, Youd be a hippocrite - So I appreciate your honesty.

HeheheHey, Rayan.

I find your music answers interesting. I was trained classically as well, also piano. I even started a degree as a performance major but do to "life problems" never finished. Interestingly though I also have been drawn to electronic music in the past and had been being tutored at one point on how to DJ (though I don't think I was very good at it - but that might just be my lack of ego talking).
At any rate. I don't think it was a lame answer at all. :)

You should definitely try posting in the book forum (now that we have one). I love the story about stealing your dad's Sidney Sheldon books. That's brilliant. One of the first novels I read and made me fall in love with reading was a Terry Brooks book that I managed to get my grandmother to buy for me though it was rather risque in areas as well and no 7 year old should have been reading it. :)

What is it that keeps you from writing yourself?

What is it that keeps you from writing yourself?7 Years old?! dude - u started reading early. At 7 i couldn't be pulled apart from transformers and/or Teenage mutant ninja turtles! (those were the days!) hehe

I wish i could write a book - maybe I will someday, but two things are holding me back at the moment: 1) lack of time. Even when i want to start I just end up thinking i've got way too much work to do, so i never start - and still dont do my coursework either! 2) When it comes to putting pen to paper, I just never know wot to write hehe

So are you a writer then?Yeah, 7. My mom taught me how to read when I was 3. Needless to say, it caused me more problems in school because i knew HOW to read than it would have had i been illiterate. :(
Don't get me wrong, I loved my cartoons and playing Thundercats with my friends outside. But I would always curl up with a book either outside or inside at some point in the day... when I wasnt' obsessively at the piano. :)

I have written poems mainly. I have a ton of them, and when I was in high school I had people tell me I should get some of them published; but lack of confidence has kept me from ever doing anything like that. I don't write as much anymore. A lot of the writing I had done came from a lot of emotional turmoil, depression, anxiety, etc. As I've healed from a lot of that I sort of put writing behind me as when I think quite deeply it tends to dredge up a lot of that past turmoil again.

I did start writing a few stories, but well after about 5-6 pages they got forgotten about.

But this is YOUR karma ... not mine. :) What do you see yourself doing after school? (you may have already answered that one)

Hey Again all!

So its my brothers birthday today - and we had a falling out yesterday. Damn he cane be so damn arrogant sometimes. I blame my parents - they've lived in this hierarchical family system for generations, whereby the elder family member has say over every decision / outspeaks others opinions and has the ability to demand jobs to be done to the younger members. Now lets be honest, might have worked back in the day but I dont get why the hell my parents think its feasible for us to be born, brought up and live in todays western society yet still demand that this hierarchy should be in place. It aint gonna work really now is it!?!

And as for my brother - He's as damn westernised as I am (and ever British Born Easterner is) but he refususes to lose some standard eastern characteristics: He chauvanistic, up himself and really needs to come back down to earth. You can't laugh at someone elses opinions or think someone else is thick as shit just because they dont agree with you. Opinions are opinions and he's gotta learn to deal with that.

Our argument was based on his idea that his fiance (who was also there in the room along with the rest of our family) shouldn't work but instead run the household - i.e. cooking, cleaning, looking after kids etc etc. Throughout the evening at different times, he demanding that my mum make him a cup of tea, my sister take his plate and cutlery into the kitchen and I go upstairs to get his wallet.

Now my mom and sister obliged - after all, he's a 'man' and even though they hate it they never take a stand. I refused to be ordered around by him, who hadn't got up off the sofa since he got back. He could do it himself!

I told him straight his intimidation tactics will not work on me and he's gotta learn to at least do something for himself. He's 27, no education, mum and dad payed for his mobile phone business costing well over in excess of £30,000, bought him a fantastic 3 bedded house, pay ALL his bills for him (still - and i mean ALL inc. mobile etc), give him money every week to go and doss with his friends, Payed off his debts of £20,000 he built up in 2 years - and what does he do? Nothing, absa fucking lutely nothing. Now he's convincing my mom and dad to sign our family estate over in his name now that he's getting married, and 'they' live with him. I've told my parents if they even consider it then they'll never ever see me again - ever, and i mean it. This home is my parents security and its going to stay that way till the day they're both in their graves.

When will some people Grow Up and GET REAL!

phoenix_indigo

geez. sorry to hear that your brother is like that. some people will take total advantage of a situation of people let them. i'm glad that you feel strong enough to stand up to him and i hope that your parents listen to you on the matter of signing their 'estate' over to him.

makes me feel bad for his fiancee honestly.

Although I am in the US and not the UK :)
One quick question (or 2 or 3) for you since you are Persian.
1. Did you see the movie 300?
If not would you like to?
And if so did you find it disrespectful of your Persian heritage?Hi Dirk_Pitt (Porn Star name!?)

1 - No I haven't seen 300 - but yeah i'd like to purely because of the controversy it caused and the fact that the graphics look pretty damn cool!

I think (from what I understand) that the film exploits the current situation of Iran in the international Arena and acts as a)an entertaining movie and b) a (deliberate?) propoganda tool with a definate agenda. Not that I'm a conspiracy theorist but it suprises me how naive the world can be when they're fed information indirectly.

Whilst I'm here. the other thing thats really pissed me off today about international politics.

After a 12 (or so) hour briefing session with the released british marines, they came for a press conference where they suddenly told the world how they'd been mistreated and mentally tortured - DESPITE the world seeing them on tv being treated pretty damn well.

Anywayz, Iran, who have mantained the most dignified role in this whole fiasco released footage of the marines having a great time whilst being 'imprisoned'! Laughing Joking, Playing, Making faces at the camera, Eating feasts, playing table tennis. They claimed the marines false statements were just propoganda.

The marines never mentioned this in the press conference. Is there no one else in the world who wishes to acknowledge that Britain has been exposed in their propoganda warfare and institutional Lies!? Jesus Christ i mean, im suprised people have turned a blind eye to it.

Grrrr!

On a brighter note, I'm back off to Newcastle tomorow! Kinda nicer when you're back in your own little domain! hehe

Now Then Peeps!

Feels like its been ages! Look at you guys, I leave for just a few days and its chaos in my thread - tsssk! ;)

Anywayz, jokes aside, I was tempted to go on Deal or No Deal - I mean, come on, theres no skill involved! I'd do better on that than I would on Mastermind haha

Phoenix, u asked me who said 'But why do you want to be like those white people?'

It was an Aunt - I just remember it coz it broke up a lot of tension in the room whilst i was getting told off for being caught with a cigarette. We all just burst out laughing, literally pissin ourselves.

So this is the second all nighter i'm pulling at Newcastle Business School - An exciting essay on the Growing Indian Economy from the liberalisation of its trade barriers. Bet your all jealous ;)

Some random information:
What I'm listening to: More Fire Crew - Sambucca
Where I am, 2nd floor, last computer on the end, with Jack (small white guy) and Cecil (Big black guy) [Together, we are the united nations]
News from today: I won £20 from coming second place at karaoke in a gay bar. I sang Vibekingz Feat Maliq - She's like the wind
New joke I heard today: What do you call a fly with no wings? A Walk

Anywayz, catch u all later!

Your essay actually sounds quite interesting. My coursework is a pain in the arse, so much to do tonight. Ah well, that's what we get for wanting to be like all those white people I guess....

On that note...

Are your parents or other members of your family observant muslims? How do they feel about the fact that you're not?

Hi Lithium

Both my parents are pretty lenient. (I used the work 'pretty' after innitially writing 'very' then changing it. Very would have been an overstatement). They protect and abide by the 'values' of Muslimism (my made up word) but are open to the 'homogonisation' of our cultures to an extent that doesn't threaten these values.

For example, we're not forced to pray, go to mosque, are allowed to mingle and mix with the opposite sex, stay out late, listen to music.

But we're not allowed to drink, smoke, shag around, take drugs, lie, steal etc and going to mosque / praying is 'advised'.

Its more like the ethics that Islam brings that we are asked to live by. Most of the time I have no problem with that - though there are somtimes grey areas which cause a bit of conflict. A lot of these are more because of 'what people would say' as opposed to any strict views held by my parents. Generally, I live a very liberalised life compared to other muslims, i know that much!

And there we go!
