Both were good, but I have to go with Street Fighter.

Streets of rage were better than both, but completely different type of game!

Well, I think Shinobi smokes Streets of Rage, but yea I went with Street Fighter as well on this one. Ryu is just the man! :D

I have to disagree... blatently Blanka or E.Honda.

I forgot about Shinobi, that was cool too :D

Definitely Street Fighter.

Street Fight 2: Turbo is like my favorite fighting game ever, except for maybe Soul Caliber.

Chun Li is the shit. All her crazy kicks and the occasional upskirt camera shot. Her and E. Honda. Although if you fought with E. Honda you had a completely unfair advantage because of his killer karate chop thingy.

RELAYER

Chun Li is my 2nd favorite, I am better with her than I am with Ryu, only slitley, but still, I like to use Ryu anyway because he is so cool :)

You and your kung fu. :)

Ryu's okay. He's quick, but he's weak. Chun Li's quick AND has powerful kicks.

I will admit that it takes more skill to play with Ryu though.

Well it's sort-of a hard pick since Street Fight is good but has more of a Japanese feel to it and Mortal Kombat has blood and a more crazy story. However I still feel Mortal Kombat is better.

If I may ask, um, why?

Mortal Kombat was okay, but nothing compared to Street Fighter.

Mortal Kombat here......but it maybe it has to do with the fact that I have more experiance with MK.

Sould Caliber is better than both IMO ;).

Nice thread. One of my favorite claims to fame is that I won a large Mortal Kombat tournament in my hometown (Birmingham, AL) when I was 7 years old in 1993, playing against mostly college kids. I was probably the best player in Birmingham and was famous for wracking up 50+ game winning streaks and destroying people while holding a casual conversation with someone else. The only person I ever played who was decidedly better than me was this guy I played in a Houston, TX arcade when my family traveled there for my cousin's wedding. He whooped me good a couple of games and, being 7 or 8 at the time, I stormed out of the arcade holding back tears. hahaha. As for original question, Street Fighter 2 was an absolutely groundbreaking game. It invented fighting games as we know them. It probably had the superior gameplay. However, Mortal Kombat was SOOOOO much more stylish. The characters and stages were way cooler, and fatalities were the shit. When I won that tournament, I managed to double-head my opponent at the end of the winning match. For those of you who don't know, with Johnny Cage you can actually knock of their head twice (a second head just appears in the air) if you time it just right. I was always Cage, he was by far the most effective player for me. So I would say Street Fighter has the greater legacy and is the more "classic" game by far, but I prefer playing Mortal Kombat.

Remember, babealities? hahaha  I knew a kid who was like you when I was the same age, he was amazing at that damn game! I killed him in Street Fighter though ;)

Bahaha. Babealities! Even as early as MK2 the series had gone completely hambone... then again, I guess the original was pretty hambone already! And then "friendships" of course, those were a hoot.

I was quite good as Street Figher, but way better at MK. I just didn't play enough SF (although I did get pretty good against the computer on SNES version)

street fighter by a LONG shot...

Loved the way the series progressed...I loved the street fighter alpha series with the super-combo bars and counter-combos...got really mad, it's fantastic when you are playing a friend who has a similar skill level to you.

I also liked it when they pitted the street fighters against the marvel characters, and capcom vs marvel with the tag team system.......it just got completely insane, like having 3 man teams with like Ryu, Spiderman and Chun-Li lol So awesome.

Generally I prefer MK series but it hardly depends which SF or MK I'm trying to compare. For example SF3A0 is better for me than MK4 which is crap.

Both are classics, but i must say when the N64 came out and i played Mk Trilogy. That game was the first that got me hooked. I ended up gettin a 64 again just for that. Then i got more games, some classics will never die.

okay... the only time i had both of those games it'd have to be for Sega Genesis...and I'd have to say MK takes the cake. GET OVAAAA HERREEE!! Scorpio was the MAN! And street fighter used to get a lil boring after a while (guess it wasn't gory enough). I mean, dont get me wrong, I loved both games... just prefer MK.

Street fighter all the way!! Mortal Kombat was good for the finishing moves, but I think street fighter was a more enjoyable game by far. Screens for the new Street Fighter look awesome too!

Haha I absolutely have to go with MK on this one. MK2 was the all time best, followed by Trilogy, and my two favorite fighters were Smoke and Subzero. I got MK2 on my 10th birthday party and my friends and I stayed up all night trying to unlock all the secrets, some of which to this day we believe might be hidden somewhere in the game.

I remember the first time I fought Noob Saibot, and the elusive Dan Forden popup, toastie! :D I just LOVE MK! :)
