He's Gone

-Jim R.

She kneels beside me, clasping my hand
My trembling fingers rest within her warm palm
Her eyes gaze desperately into mine
She speaks about such trivial things
Her lights left on, her house unlocked
Then glances at her golden watch
Cars sail by outside my window, sirens scream
High heels step across linoleum floors

Darkness pours into the stifling room
A thickening mist envelops us both
With a blink it dissipates, then forms again
A tear rolls down her cheek
Sliding through faint lines that press into her skin
She pats her face dry, removing a layer of makeup
Underneath the powder lies pallid skin
She sighs solemnly, returns her attention to me

The darkness has now filled the entire room
She leaves to fill her empty glass
A nurse places a blanket at my feet, then walks away
My eyelids are pulled closed with a certain finality
A droning tone echoes through the room
The door is flung open, she enters again
She kneels beside my bed, assuming her former position
She grasps my hand with an urgent pull.

…“He's gone."
